2009 Quarterback Offer Board

I know I promised a recruiting board several weeks ago. Every time I sit down to start it I realize how daunting a task it is to do all the research involved. It wasn't too bad last year when Penn State only had about 15 scholarships to play with, but this year we are expecting a full class of 25 kids which means we'll probably hand out over 60 offers before the year is done. And we're into the time of year where the recruiting board is in constant flux as kids commit, take PSU off their list, and new offers are handed out to the plan B kids. So instead of trying to roll the whole thing out at once, I decided to roll it out in phases. First we'll start with the quarterbacks.

My plan is to gradually add to this. It's not going to be a constantly morphing document because like I said, with a class this big it's going to be constantly changing. And once the season starts forget it. So I look at this more as something you can refer back to from time to time. It's not a very fancy board as I'm still learning the ins and outs of this BSD HD thing. So you'll see me eventually start getting braver and tinkering with the format. So feedback is appreciated. If you have any suggestions please let me know.

Format looks fine

Easy to read and nice layout, no need to make it any more fancy if you ask me.

One question, why include Newsome when he’s already committed to the Maize and Blue? Is this just to keep track of players that have received Penn State offers?

Regardless, nicely done.

woops..

I meant to include Murray in that question as well… probably just answered my own question didn’t I? Sorry.

Thanks

That’s my thinking. It’s interesting to see the kids we offered and whiffed on and who we lost them too.

Local Kid

There have been rumblings around my home town of Bethel Park (South of Pittsburgh) about our quarterback, Erik Olson. Supposedly, PSU has inquired (but not offered yet), however, I don’t know the kid personally and can’t confirm this. I do see him around campus often wearing Penn State stuff.

For a junior, I think he fared pretty well in a run first offense. He was 88-144 for 1438 yards, 12 TDs, 1 INT. This was all at the quad-A level. ESPN.com has him listed as considering PSU, Pitt, BC, Maryland, and Syracuse.

In the grand scheme of things, the kid probably won’t make a darned bit of difference for the program, but its fun for a local guy like me to talk about.

You know something that Scout doesn't

I looked up the links you had for Antone Exum and Morgan Newton and it does NOT say that PSU offered them a scholarship. Please clarify.

Updates

I don’t think Scout is doing that great a job of updating whether or not players have offers and what not, especially since it’s so early in the recruiting season. There is very little guarantee that a scout page is accurate. I mean, Shrive was taken off of PSU’s board for awhile, you just never know.

Rivals

Both guys are listed on the Rivals offer board.

Looks like PSU isn’t geared towards the QB this year (although verbals don’t always mean that much). However, there are still some good prospects on that list, and I haven’t had a chance to watch the vids or anything yet. Plus, you have to realize that these big time 5 star guys will get snatched up early…something you find often in the NCAA video game recruiting ;-)

Thanks for posting the updates!

Out of all these QBs...

who would you like to see most in a Nittany Lion uniform, Mike? I haven’t got the chance to look up any of them, so I’m just going to follow your opinion

by WPIALkid22 on May 21, 2008 2:39 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

My Pick

I want Tate Forcier. He sounds like a Pat Devlin type kid with a great arm but he also rushed for something like 700 yards as a junior so he’s very mobile. But he’s probably more of a pro-style drop back passer.

If we look for more of a Michael Robinson type to run the option I would opt for either Crawford or Drake. But Morgan and Exum would fit that mold too. I haven’t heard as much about them though. It appears the coaches are convinced they want to commit to the spread option judging by the kids they are offering.

by BSD on May 21, 2008 8:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What about

that kid from Canada? There is supposedly a dual threat QB from Canada that has a high interest in PSU. I can’t think of his name right now.

I believe....

you’re referring to Myles Gibbon. He attended the PSU Nike camp.

Canada

He’s supposed to be pretty good. He’s supposedly built like a tall Forcier

Myles Gibbon

I was going to include him on the board, but he’s pretty much an unknown right now. He doesn’t even have a profile on scout or rivals. His high school coaches don’t have a clue how to market him to schools in the U.S. They just showed up at the Nike camp in State College with a highlight tape to hand out. Reports are he looked very impressive and he’s very high on Penn State. I’m sure the coaches will review his tape and if he looks good there he may get an offer, but I don’t think you’ll see him get four or five stars from the recruiting services with him being in Canada. Nobody knows about the level of competition he’s playing against and the scouting services probably won’t make a special trip up to see him play in person.

If he starts to get more publicity or I hear he gets an offer I’ll add him to the list.

Thanks.

Yeah, that is who I was referring to.

by Nick7 on May 21, 2008 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Apparently

Football in Canada is 12v12. That might make him pretty good at reading coverages and placing balls if there are more defensivemen in the backfield. I haven’t watched any tape so I really have no idea, just speculations.

by psuphiman80 on May 21, 2008 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Canadian Football

More defenders, but the field is much wider and the endzones are 20 yards deep instead of 10 meaning those defenders have a ton of ground to cover. It makes for a wide open passing game.

Question

This is a remedial recruiting question, but could PSU have this kid throw and work a little bit during a formal visit to better gauge his ability? Is that cool with NCAA recruiting regulations?

I actually like the idea of getting a player for America, Jr. for lots of reasons, among them that I love Canadians.

Incidentally, my comment below about catching passes off the bounce is a joke, which usually works in person, but I fear fails over the internet.

by spakajewia on May 21, 2008 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Can't you...

...catch a pass off one-bounce in canadian football? It’s too hard to quantify the effect that has on his numbers, eh?

Tee hee hee

a ha ha ha, rotflmao. Good one Spake! I get it now; thanks for the clarification that it’s a joke. These internets are so confounded!

well

We know that tosu can catch passes of the bounce and get first downs out of them

refer to the ‘03 game I believe (when we beat them and before the instant replay) I was at that game as a junior and I could clearly see from the student section that pass was incomplete but apparently the refs had a horrible view from where they were b/c they got the completion and won the game

Remeber Phil Yeboah-Kodie - same school

It’s as close to big time high school football as you can get in Canada. That team produces at least one or two solid NCAA players every year.

http://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca/athletics/notablealumni.html

I wouldn’t worry about the quality of competition.

Drake

He might not end up at QB, he could be a CB or a WR. I’m not sure exactly what PSU is recruiting him as. Maybe he’ll go in as an ATH.

Kudos & Suggies

Well done, Mike. I continue to love your work (big phrase in Australia, btw: ‘love ur work.’). Two suggestions: one, as noted by wipialkid above, we’ve all become as addicted to the shiny new bike of your opinions as you have of our replies. I love that you include so many links to outside sources in your blog, but we can’t have it be only that: you’d be depriving us. We need you, dog—what’s in YOUR head! Throw another column up in there that has space for a few of your witticisms and opinions, takes on this or that kid.

The second one is a personal taste. But when I visit blogs with lots of links, I like to have the links launch new windows, so I can toggle between the blog and the outside source. As opposed to the links navigating me away from my precious BSD HD inside the existing open browser window.

Thanks for the input

You’re right. After I posted the table I thought “Geez that’s boring”. I’ll try to liven things up with some opinions going forward. I have to be careful about what I say thought because I can’t divulge any premium material.

I can set up the links to open new browser windows, but then I would get complaints from people who say they are tired of closing 10 windows every time they visit BSD HD. General consensus from things I’ve read is that most people are put off when a link make another window open up much like they hate popup ads, so that’s what I go with.

As a Blog writer...

do you get more hits if surfers have to navigate back? Does this make a difference in those blog sites like technorati, del.ici.ous and the like?

As a reader I hate clicking on a mid story link and being navigated away from the original story. I usually then get side tracked, forget where I originally was and never get back. Wouldn’t put an extra cent in your pocket but I would want to keep the eyes on my site. I vote for a new window for the link.

Sounds like a poll is in order. If only I can figure out how to do polls in this BSD HD thingy.

Depending on your browser....

You might want to try holding Ctrl or Alt or Shift when you click on a link. On some newer browsers that will open the link in a new tab or window. There are also some addins that will allow you to right-click and choose to open the link in a new window or tab.

Tate Forcier

It seems the entire QB recruiting effort revolves around Forcier. How likely is he to commit? With Kevin Newsome off the board it appears there will not be a top recruit for the position this year.
That said, maybe we should keep in mind that Joe Flaco the NFL 1st round pick from Delaware was the Nations #43 High school QB when Anthony Morelli was #3. We all know how that turned out.

Ask yourself this

Forcier has an offer from every program in the country. He can go wherever he wants. Do you think he’s going to come all the way across the country to play for Jay Paterno?

by BSD on May 24, 2008 3:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I asked myself this, per instruction

And the answer was ‘no.’

We also know

That Joe Flacco could not hack it at Pitt, and he transferred to a division 2 school because he could not beat out Tyler Plako. We do know that Tyler Plako will be lucky to be on a scout team after training camp this year. We have no idea how Joe’s career in the NFL will turn out.

I guess my point is Anthony Morelli was a division one college quarterback, and Joe Flacco was not.

Remove.........

the sit out a year rule and you probably have Flacco back in a D-I program. He may have played D-I AA, but he clearly was a D-I talent.
