LJ Sr. Strikes Again
I am sure that Mike will have this up soon, but LJ Sr. landed another top recruit out of the State of Maryland today! 4 star DE prospect Sean Stanley gave his verbal to the Nittany Lions today. This recruiting class is shaping up nice for JoePa given his recent dealing with the administration. A good year on the field by the team is really going to tie Spanier's hands! Also let's give it up for LJ Sr. who is just dominating the recruiting seen in Maryland this year!
We ARE!

I saw that
I’ll have something up later tonight. I must admit I did not see this one coming. He attended PSU’s junior day and came away impressed, but he really kind of bad mouthed our S&C program which led many to believe we were out of it. I guess LJSR worked his magic.

Off the radar
I don’t think a lot of people saw this one coming….I know I didn’t, but I don’t think you can ever count us out when LJ Sr. is the PSU staff member doing the recruiting. Also I think the snow ball effect is coming into play kind of like it did in the Maybin recruiting class. We have a lot of Maryland recruits already and as you noted in an early post I expect us to pick up Jelani Jenkins and Tavon Austin. Also, apparantly rivals thinks we are close to picking up a verbal from Brandon Felder. The State of Maryland has definitely left its stamp on the 09 class!

Everyday is like Christmas lately!
I can honestly say without any hesitation that I love LJ Sr. and the entire State of Maryland!!
Great news! Welcome aboard Sean! We’re on our way to Top 10 class!!

Don't we look dumb
How many of us predicted a “wasted” recruiting year after all the administration stuff. It’s good to be wrong!

RE: Don't we look dumb
I think there’s something going on that we won’t be aware of until the season is over or maybe we’ll never know. These kids are being told something to put their minds at ease. I’m confident of that but of course I can’t verify that. It’s just common sense.

Why don't you ask?
Since we think there might be a change in the future for Penn State, why don’t we ask the only person thats on BSD that has had their son recruited. If there is something to this i am sure Romedog30 would at least be able to say yes or no.

I am...
psyched out of my mind over the good news. I’m glad we are making moves this early, and picking up good people. I’ve noticed in my research for another article that we haven’t had a class that has outranked Michigan and OSU in years, and with the exception of 2006, we haven’t had a top ranked class in quite a while (both stats are from 2002 till now). I would feel better about all of the Joe Pa business if we could have a respectable class that is highly ranked. If we do, we would be set regardless of whether or not Joe Pa goes longer than one year.

Recruiting has not been that bad....
With the exception of this year (which was a small but quality class) we have had a top 25 class every year since 2004. Like this year, 2003 was a small class, but it put out several NFLers including Tony Hunt, Poz and oh yeah….Austin Scott …who will make the Browns roster this year. 2002 was another top 25 class. Overall recruiting has not been bad. Too many people got down on the class this year…but it was a small class and realistically had a very small chance of being a top 25 class (getting Pryor and keeping Michael Shaw would not even have done it). The 2004 class with Morelli was a top 15 class (and remember Deion Butler was not even give a scholarship as a one or two star recruit). The 2006 class was ranked ahead of both Michigan and Ohio State and the 2005 class with D-Will and King was ranked much too low by the recruiting services (again one of the most productive players of the class…Jordan Norwood was not a scholarship player). Even if we do not have a “top class” as determined by the recruiting services, I will be happy if the coaches continue to get the kids that they want this year. We already have 10 verbals which is the most PSU has had at this point in the recruiting process ever. A quality QB, two good running backs and a couple of receivers will have us in the position we need to be for next year. Based on the projections this is very likely to happen and all the haters are going to have to wait for at least another couple of years to oust JoePA! QB play is the key….and if we get decent play from our QB, with ball protection, 2008 is going to be a great year!

Butler and Norwood
Just to follow up….i just checked and Deion Butler was a one star player according to the recruiting gooroos. He was recruited by Larry Johnson, Sr (thanks again LJ, Sr.) and is as good as reason as any to remember that the star ratings are not the end all be all when it comes to high school football talent.
Also…Jordan Norwood was not even evaluated.

Recruiting Services.......
I’ll spare the longtime readers with the same post over and over again about recruiting…...however, I would like to point out that its not like you have a bunch of 4 and 5 star recruits listed on the websites where the recruit is only offered by Tulane, SMU, and Western Michigan. The major programs and the recruiting agencies tend to agree on who are the most “talented” prospects.

recruiting stars
I definately agree with that, but I look at it like this: I kid who is a lower star but gets offers from USC, Florida, LSU, Texas, etc. speaks more to me than a higher star who doesn’t pull in so many top-tier offers. I think the college scouts are much better than Rivals, Scout or whoever, but it is nice to look at them for consideration

Absolutely.....
I could give two shits what rivals and scout rate a kid as long as he is a kid that Penn State wants. Over 3/4 of this class has not been rated yet by the recruiting services….but they are all kids PSU has gone after. None of the kids who have signed are plan B kids. Also….for all the 4 an 5 star kids that shine I can give you a name that has bombed. Recruiters look for kids that are not only good athletes but ones that fit their particular system. A school that blows Eric’s SMU….Tulane theory out of the water is Wake Forest. Jim Grobe rarely gets higher than a two star recruit….yet he picks kids that fits his program then redshirts them for a year. Result ….ACC title.
Let’s be honest…the last three years we are 1-2 against OSU, by record one of the best teams in the nation…..I certainly would argue with anyone who would assert OSU has the better record because they were more talented. I think our recruiting since 02 has been very good…have we missed on players….sure….but who doesn’t? This year is off to a great start and promises to be another 2006 type recruiting class if we keep rolling in the right direction.

One example........
doesn’t “blow a theory out of the water”. Interesting though that Wake has signed 1 4 star recruit in the last 7 years. Let me try putting this another way…......show me a guy that had offers from Ohio State, Michigan, USC, and Florida and was not a 4 star recruit or better ? Likewise, show me a 4 star recruit who was not recruited by anyone but Wake, Rutgers, BC, and Syracuse. It doesn’t happen.
Wake is just recruiting the way the rest of the Big East does. No Big East school besides Miami has had a top 20 recruiting class in the last 7 classes. And coincidentally, the Big East is arguably considered by most to be the weakest BCS football conference.
Pic15, is the Nittany Lion Club still going to be at Famous Pub this year ?

Penn State Club in Atlanta
As far as I know they will still be at Famous this year…...I have not received any information to the contrary. I wish they would open a PA bar down here that would just carry Penn State, Eagle and Steelers games…..I have toyed with the concept for years. BTW…..the Big Ten picnic is this weekend at Lake Allatoona….usually a pretty good time. I will miss it this year though as I will be in PA for the weekend. The club link is as follows:
And here is the listing regarding the picnic:
