And now prepare to be dazzled and amazed by my uneducated and uninformed analysis of these young men. I'll leave Heastie, Felder and Stokes out since they have already committed.
Justin Brown
His highlight film is impressive. Like a lot of 6'4" high school receivers you see a lot of jump balls thirty yards down field. He's able to take advantage of a lot lesser talent, but in the college game you have to bring more than that. He can run past the defender and get good separation if you send him on a fly or deep post route. But he seems like he tends to round off his routes and coast through them at times. As a result he struggles to get separation on short and medium range routes.
But the bottom line is he has size and speed and good hands. The rest can be coached up. That's why several programs like Iowa, Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Rutgers, Pitt, Maryland, and Oregon have extended offers to him. He visited Penn State for the Blue White game and liked the atmosphere, but he wasn't overly impressed with how we used our wideouts. I think he's high on Penn State, but he's not sure he likes our offense. He may wait until fall to gather more information.
Jaleel Clark
Clark runs very precise routes and gets good separation on the medium and short range routes. He's very physical at the line when a corner tries to jam him and he's able to get free. His speed is excellent and his hands are sure. I can't find anything wrong on his tape. I would really like to land this kid. His offer list consists of Connecticut, Missouri, Pitt, and Minnesota, and all indications are Penn State is his leader right now.
Todd Thomas
Thomas is a tremendous athlete, but I didn't come away that impressed by his film. Every time they threw him the ball it was a jump ball 30 yards down field or a bubble screen. Most of his highlights are him taking handoffs in the backfield. It's a clear example of a high school coach just giving the ball to his best athlete time and again. He has a tremendous upside with his athletic ability, but as a wide receiver I think it may take a couple years to polish him up a bit. It may be a moot point anyway as it appears he's probably headed to Michigan.
Shawney Kersey
There is no video available on Kersey, which may explain why he isn't being recruited very heavily yet. There are also rumors that schools are waiting to see his transcript or SAT scores or something like that. But it doesn't sound like there is a problem. He was really enamored with Michigan when Rich Rodriguez took over and the media couldn't stop talking about his impending global domination, but he has cooled off the Wolverines lately and Penn State has really come on in recent weeks. Many suspect he is holding out for the Penn State offer, and when it comes in he won't waste any time pulling the trigger.
Carvin Powell
It's tough to gauge this kid since his highlight reel consists of five plays. His speed and explosiveness don't impress me, but like I said it's only five plays. It probably doesn't matter anyway since I get the impression this kid isn't coming north. My gut says he'll end up at Virginia Tech.
Tyree Watkins
Again no film so I can't tell you much about him. And on top of that he's one of those kids that plays his cards close to his vest so you can't gauge his interest in Penn State or any school. He's gathering an impressive offer list so he must be a good one. We'll have to wait and see where he ends up.
Brandon Scott
Here again, a kid with no film. Listen kids, if you want four or five stars from the recruiting sites and a ton of offers the first thing you need is a good highlight tape. But it's not entirely his fault since Scott was injured most of 2007. He hasn't landed any offers yet as I suppose schools are waiting to see what he does his senior year. Penn State is in close contact with him.
Devon Smith
See the running back offer board. Lightning in cleats. BSD likey. And Smith likey PSU.

Devon Smith = Darren Sproles?
Devon Smith seems like the second coming of Darren Sproles (Kansas State running back who helped led KSU to its only Big 12 title in 2003) – a tiny but super-quick tailback who is just a plain old pest for opposing tacklers to wrap their arms around.

Devon Smith
FOS has some video footage and an interview with this kid. Speed is not an issue that’s for sure. Seems like he needs to work on his hands. Regardless, I’d love to see this kid in blue & white.

Hands
I thought the same thing when I watched it. How many reps did he get at this combine? Of his three or four reps on that tape he dropped one and bobbled another. Was that his best stuff?
Looks like another DWill to me. Bubble screens, end arounds, and five yard out patterns is all he’ll see at Penn State.

Hands
Hopefully he can improve his hands his senior year. If not maybe he can be a return specialist. Of course that would require his hands get better. I’d like to see him get an offer though.
Do you think they should pass on him Mike?

No
I hope they offer him and I hope they get him, but he’s not a “must get” type kid. At 150 lbs. he’s too small to play flanker and too small to be a full time running back. He’s pretty much limited to being a slot receiver where you can look for mismatches against linebackers and slow safeties. He’ll probably only ever get 8-10 touches a game including punt and kick returns, but he’s the kind of player that break out on every play and change a game.
Unfortunately, given the way we’ve used DWill the past two years I’m not so sure we could use him effectively. A player like this needs to run slants and crossing routes, something we haven’t seen much of. But put him on an end around and he could be deadly.
So to summarize, I would like to see him in Blue and White. But the coaches are slow playing him for some reason. Maybe they are waiting to see his transcript after the school year is over. Or maybe they want to see how he does at Penn State’s all senior came later this month. I think he’ll probably get an offer and most likely accept it. I just hope we don’t wait too long and piss him off.
