Penn Staters in California?
Hey, I'm a PSU alum about to move to the San Francisco bay area in August, just in time for football season. I was wondering if there are any Penn Staters on this blog who live in that area and could tell me which bars in San Fran show PSU football games. There has to be at least one bar. I tried a google search for a PSU chapter in San Francisco of San Jose and couldn't find any. Any help would be appreciated. It's going to suck getting up at 8 AM for noon east coast kickoffs.

California's a big state
I’m not an alum, but was born and raised in Central PA and thusly became a die hard Lions fan. I’ve been in Southern CA for a few years and used to have to resort to the bar for eggs and beers (not a bad way to go, really) or paying $20 to the ESPN pay-per-view thing. This will be my first season with DirecTV, which carries The Big Ten Network. I’m hoping we get regular play there. Any out-of-towners care to fill me in on the number of games TBTN has carried in the past?
Sorry for sort of hijacking your thread. San Fran is my favorite American city. Enjoy.
Please go away Justin Speier. Your work here is done. And take Quinlan's half-inch fielding radius with you.

So Cal
Reggie,
Whereabouts in Southern Cal are you? I graduated last Spring from Penn State and I’m living in Redondo right now. I know quite a few Penn Staters around this area, and there happen to be a few bars aroudn the South Bay where the blue&white get together to watch games in pretty large numbers.
I also enjoy San Fran- it’s a very unique city. Have fun up there.

Orange County
Down here behind “the orange curtain” in Huntington Beach. I’ve seen a few flags flying and alumni license plate frames around town.

Reggie,
Thanks to the BTN, you should be able to see most PSU games this year. BTN carries a few, but last year, they negotiated this reverse mirror thing: “When the Big Ten signed their new TV deal that started with the 2007 season, they successfully negotiated for all Big Ten games airing on ABC at either 12pm or 3:30pm EST to be shown on ESPN/ESPN2 in all markets where the game is not on ABC. In markets where the Big Ten game is on ABC, an alternate game will be shown on ESPN”. I live in TN, and last year I saw 11/12 games (only the Temple game was not on either BTN, ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 in my area).

BTN
Last year I think they carried three of our games. Every team is guaranteed at least two appearances on the BTN.
Are the bars in CA open at 8 AM? That is so cool.

Thanks
Heck yeah the bars are open that early. Especially the Irish ones. Nothing beats waking up early to some shepherd’s pie, pints of Guinness and penn state football on a Saturday morning.

Shewt
By the time you’re just waking up I’ve already been drinking for four hours. How are y’all supposed to tailgate out there?

This is true
But when you’re passed out face down in a puddle of your own vomit, we’ve still got a good 3 hours left in us!
Haha…

True
And when PSU wraps up their win over Ohio State at 11:30 PM, I’m headed off to bed while you’re just starting the celebration.

California Chapters
Here are the California alumni chapters:

I’d say get in touch with the SF chapter and go from there.

West Coast is great for watching football!
not for the teams. I could care less about the pac-10. However, having games come on at 8 am is unbelievably great. You get up and watch a game with a cup of coffee or maybe a bloody mary. You can log a full day of football watching and still have some of your evening free.
Now what is tough is getting up to watch gameday which starts at 7.

Kezar off of Stanyan
I’m not an alumn but my father is and gave me the middle name “Nittany”. Needless to say I’m a huge fan. I moved to SF 2 years ago and it’s pretty slim on sports bars. But I do like Kezar. It’s not a PSU bar by any means (actually more OSU), but has a lot of flat screens and really good wings. I’m always on the look out for MROB out and about in SF!
Looking forward next season.
