Rumor: Vanderlinden

Fun rumor for Friday .. A sales guy I work with was a former PSU lineman back in the early 70s was in today and we chatted up this season.. He told me word on the street is that it's Joe's last year for sure.. and that Joe wants Jay to take over.. but the word on the street is that it will be Ron Vanderlinden - not Tom Bradley... Purely rumor and speculation from a former letterman who's connected to the program - but .. fun to think about.

Isn't there a quote

somewhere that states that Joe doesn’t think that PSU is a good place for Jay to be the head coach?

I’ll make it clear and simple.
1. The best choice for the job is Greg Schiano, PERIOD!
2. The next best choice is Tom Bradley, for obvious reasons.
This year is definitely it for Joe. This team has the potential to go 10-2, and play in the…Capital One Bowl? At Joe’s age, is he really going to hang around another 2 or 3 years for another team like this one? If Penn State under achieves this year, they will be 8-4 again. Believe it or not, there are writers and websites that are predicting just that. When I say 10-2, I mean Penn State will lose two games in October(OSU/WIS). My prediction is actually 9-3. Penn State will lose a third game that should be won. Why? Well, compare OSU’s recruiting to Penn State. Penn State is recruiting at the level of a team that will win 8-10 games/season with a bowl win. Ohio State? Best case scenario, undefeated. Penn State needs to learn from Ohio State. Jim Tressel arrived at OSU in 2001. There’s only one guy left from the previous coaching staff. Penn State is losing in state talent to other schools, and not just Ohio State. Rutgers ,Pitt, and Michigan are snatching these guys. For example, Penn State needs a quarterback in this group coming in. Tom Savage, a PA four star prospect, gives a verbal to Rutgers.
Penn State is so stuck in the mud with “tradition”. I don’t know if they could handle a coach from the outside coming in, along with other coaching changes. Starting with JayPa and Galen Hall.

What Joe does and says about JayPa are 2 different things

It’s human nature. He handles Jay different than other coaches and it’s only natural and that’s why we have rules about nepotism. Deep down Joe knows that Jay shouldn’t be in the position he’s in but because he’s his son, he keeps pushing for him to gain more and more power in spite of the fact that he’s done absolutely nothing to warrant his promotions.

This is where I feel Spanier should step in because Jay is the key to PSU’s future and not Joe. If Spanier could get enough nerve up to step in and tell Joe that Jay needs to leave the staff and maybe take on another administrative position that doesn’t involve the football program, then I think we’ll see PSU football grow once again because it’s not just Jay’s inability to fulfill his duties that has hurt PSU this decade but also the fact that Joe has a blind spot for Jay.

Jay is what’s wrong with PSU football, not Joe.

Before we count JayPa out

Lets see what this seasons brings with the new offense before we count him out. I think that is why you might see PSU open it up this year to show that he can run the show. If they fall flat on their face this year then Jay will be out and another person will be in. I also have a feeling if everything works out well this year and we make a run for the national title that Jay will be the new Head Coach or at least Offensive Coordinator.

Jay will not be out unless Graham fires him

Joe will never fire him, even if we lose all of our games. In fact, he’d probably ask Galen to retire so Jay can become the OC.

This is the same Jay we’ve seen for the last 8 seasons. You can put a trendy name on the offense but it won’t work if the guy calling the plays doesn’t know his butt from a hole in the ground. This is the same guy that decided after averaging 7 YPC against MSU on the final drive that it would be important for us to stop running the ball and let Morelli throw 4 times into the endzone. This is the same coach who has us averaging 9th in QB rating in the Big Ten over the last 8 years. This is the same guy who has screwed up numerous recruiting situations time and time again. This HD label is just another way to draw attention to an incompetent individual who is trying to get his career going but truly only has a career because his last name’s Paterno and his daddy’s the coach. Jay will not succeed. I’ll call it a success when we win the Big Ten, end the streak against Michigan, and beat OSU in Columbus. If we don’t do that, then we’re the same team we’ve been the last 3 years which is a great defensive team that wins 9 games a year in spite of its offense.

There isn't a snow balls chance in hell

that JayPa will be the next head coach unless spanier is trying to bury the football program…..u can’t be serious about JayPa as a head coach, perhaps a OC nothing more

I don't think Spanier is insane enough to give Jay the position when his

dad is done. The whole situation will just reek of nepotism, and I think the people who are saying that Joe is hanging on to protect Jay are wrong. If Spanier were to promote Jay, I don’t believe Jay would get a normal grace period or learning curve that any other new head coach would get because there are so many people that are adamant that Jay should not be the next head coach. If you were to take a poll as to who people think the next coach should be, I’ll bet you wouldn’t even get 1% for Jay. And with that many people against him, Spanier would be absolutely nuts to hire him. Furthermore, with everybody, other than an elite few, feeling the pinch financially these days, a screw up like that is going to impact contributions to the Nittany Lion Club and attendance. And I don’t think Spanier is going to sacrifice his cash cow (the football program) because of Jay because I think even Spanier knows Jay isn’t worth the risk.

No disrespect intended

But this isn’t a rumor. It is a rumor based on two rumors that some other guy who played on the team 38 years ago heard. I don’t know what that is.

Jay Paterno is not going to be the next head coach, neither is Ron VanderLinden.

I'm fully aware of it

I know – it’s just what some guy told me. But it’s still fun Friday discussion Mr.

Chaos

The chaos this whole JoePa thing is causing is the same reason Spanier needs to give him Joe the job for as long as he wants it. The chaos and distraction this whole saga is causing is getting ridiculous.
