Hit And Run: Outside The Lines

The "Outside The Lines" segment aired this morning at 9:30 and was repeated on Sportscenter afterward. We'll have a recap and analysis in short order, but what did you think? It was obviously intended as a hatchet job -- was it effective? Will there be any long-term effects, or will this all be forgotten once we're treated to real football in a few weeks?

This is obviously another attempt at the media trying to sabotage Joe and Penn State. Although the problems have surfaced in the years for PSU, every school has them, we just so happen to be getting a lot of attention for it. The media has nothing better to talk about apparently, and the only two subjects that come to mind when they think of Penn State are 1. When is Joe going to retire and 2. Off-field issues. It is getting quite annoying, i feel bad that Joe and Penn State have to go through all this crap. If this does turn out to be Joe’s last year, why doesn’t the media try focusing on the GOOD things Joe has done for Penn State. We are all guilty for wanting to know who will succeed Joe when he goes, but let’s respect and admire a legend.. instead of trying to push him out.. he knows what he is doing.. show some faith

OTL

Sorry, but I do not agree that this is an attempt to sabotage JoePa and PSU. First of all everything that they reported is true in one form or another. Could they have explained how many of the charges were dropped, players were found not guilty, or that many of them were minor charges? Of course. Face it, we have never had this many problems and they are an absolute embarrassment to our school. The comments by G. Spanier and Mike Missanelli were spot on. Joe looked ridiculous trying to say “he didn’t know what they were talking about” and saying it is a “witch-hunt”. He continues to look like a fool every time he is faced with a tough question about his retirement or his play calling or anything else questionable. And I love the new line of “that’s a stupid question” when he doesn’t want to answer something. Sometimes I wonder if that man actually believes the BS that comes out of his mouth. Yeah, he has done a lot for the university and for college football but the reality is he is at the end of his career and has been for many years. If you could step away from the blue tinted glasses for just one minute you might realize that.

Thats Enough

Look at the angle they took on this story, and its clear they’re being completely unfair to PSU. In 2007, these are THEY’RE numbers, 17 players charged with 72 crimes. 9 CONVICTIONS! Thats a 12.5% conviction rate! The angle SHOULD have been, why are Penn State players getting arrested and charged with crimes they didn’t commit?

The report didn’t even mention the BS that happened to Austin Scott. It was basically the same thing as the Duke lacrosse case, the only difference was, Austin Scott was black, so the media ignored the fact that his college career was ended by an unreliable accuser who was taken seriously by a DA trying to make a name for himself by putting a Penn State football player in jail.

The truth is, more than half the convictions ESPN is citing are underage drinking charges. Do you expect me to run off Joe Paterno for a few knucklehead kids doing what college kids do? My glasses are not tinted blue, sir, they’re calling it like it is. Joe Paterno has control of this program, and by ditching players like Bell and Quarless, I think its pretty clear.

God Created the World Out Of Nothing, Paterno Built A National Superpower On Cow Fields...

ESPN = Dogshit

I think the whole thing is a bunch of bulldonk.. Steven A. Smith better keep an eye out.. or he might end up like Stu Scott and lose one.. If you look at NCAA Football as a whole it’s nothing.. look at the young man from Alabama slanging coke this year that picked up multiple felony counts.. how about USC.. Bush. Mayo.. Take most SEC.. a number of Big 12.. theres kids everywhere doing stupid shit.. seriously though.. fights and drinking – i dont care if people think its viscious or what.. fighting.. no coke, whores, or guns.. and seriously. . joe pa sent out a fucking text message?? are you fucking kidding me?? Steven A is so full of shit..

Eh...

Overall, I guess the piece was accurate, though certainly a little convenient. Spanier played the hard line and actually sounded a lot like me coming through this—“Yeah a lot of them got dropped and you never it to see that happen… it happened and we’re dealing with it but now we need to try to make sure that it doesn’t happen anymore.” Sure, fine I’m ok with that.

If I had to pick one thing about which I was most disappointed, I would say it’s the fact that Judicial Affairs dealt with it and gave the players penalties JA thought were appropriate. Apparently that wasn’t good enough for anyone in the report which not only brings into question the football players, Joe, and the athletic department, but also the entirety of the integrity of Penn State. Is it a fair statement? Maybe. But to skew it to say that justice was not served? I could have done without that.

Apart from that it seems like the biggest argument against this whole thing is not presenting a complete picture. We can talk about many other programs but the fact is our “pristine image” has been tarnished by a few loose nuts. If they can be tightened, it can be regained but the point, overall is, Penn State, a once proud program lost its innocence.

The real question: Was this worthy of a full news report? I say no. We didn’t learn anything new, we didn’t even learn everything we already know. All of this, everything that they said today was covered on Sportscenter throughout last summer, and that is why I came to the conclusion this was needless.

  • Also, I don’t care who he is, if a man calls a woman disparaging names, enough to cause her to kick him in the balls, and then he proceeds to shove her and spit on her, he has no right to complain about the punishment he is “given.”

Forgotten in a Month

By the time real football starts in the fall this wil be forgotten.

It would be forgotten even faster if incidents at other schools were reported with anything resembling the urgency or seriousness of incidents at PSU.

So – PSU has a drinking and fighting problem. Maybe next the WWL can do a story about how college kids have sex and skip class.

OTL

People actually watch this program? If it’s not a game or Sportscenter, I probably have not seen it on ESPN.

Bill came due

The bill came due for Joe. I respect him, but he let his guard down. Bringing Jay in, being a hater to the media, lack of focus in game planning, discipline, etc. are all examples. ESPN did a poor job, but there is a lot of truth to it. Time for a last shot (this year) and then new blood. The castle is starting to crumble and yes, Joe is in danger of ruining his legacy.

forgotten until...

I think it willl be forgotten by the public until ESPN airs a PSU game. Then they will bring it up again…and again…and again…and again…etc. They will probably make Todd Blackledge talk about it if he is a commentator for a PSU game.

WE ARE PENN STATE

....and I think that’s what we have to remember here. Under Joe we put ourselves in a glass house during his tenure saying “we win doing things the right way, the penn state way.” If that is something we are going to flaunt - and I want to, I want to be proud of a team and players who win with pride and honor - then we need to continue to hold people to higher standards. That means if we mess up, or have a stretch like this, which is high for any school, admit it, then we also will have an amplified spotlight on us. I don’t know if its recruting, I don’t know if its poor leadership on the team or lack of player accountability from coaches, but something, somewhere has to change. Good or bad WE ARE PENN STATE. But let’s not settle for good. Let’s make it great.

by Cedar71 on Jul 27, 2008 11:37 PM EDT   0 recs

absolutely,

I agree, however, we can’t continue to say “We’re a team of hoodlums and thugs” what is done is done and hindsight is 20/20. All of the issues have been dealt with and so it’s on to a brand new start. If we can let ourselves believe that and not get caught up by ESPN hype, we’ll get past this.

by AdamShell on Jul 28, 2008 1:21 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

i guess the most annoying part of the report was:

watching that kid in the meridian drop ‘bows around his apartment for half the segment.

ohio sucks=/

Not sabotage

Unless Greg Schiano paid off ESPN, or Spanier invited the network to do the program in hopes of undermining Joe, this show was just another example of the media running with a story. They created a mountain out of a mole hill, and their reason was to attract viewers to OTL, plain and simple. There are problems at PSU, and they have been out of hand, but these incidents weren’t things you might find in Sout Florida of California involving players with guns or getting shot or whatever. Sure, Chris Bell threatened a teammate with a knife- and was swiftly booted from the team.

One thing I found to be disturbing was the apartment fight thing. Did these same kids testify completely different or is my memory shot? I thought they had problems identifying anyone and weren’t even sure they saw someone get punched? Yet on the show, they could remember every detail.

by NittanyNutz2 on Jul 28, 2008 7:31 AM EDT   0 recs

Agreed

Let’s keep some perspective here. The fact that we are discussing at length means ESPN did what they set out to do—generate ratings and buzz. Think about it. A Miami fan, or any other school that feels like Penn State fans look down their noses at their program for superior moral character, would feel somewhat vindicated at seeing Penn State’s squeaky clean image tarnished like this. There’s no overriding agenda by ESPN other than getting viewers and selling advertising.

by lmrlion on Jul 28, 2008 8:00 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

A bit biased.

My main problems:
1. They talk so much about the fight, but didn’t discuss how most of the charges were dropped. Also, the kid was beaten with a stool and “blood everywhere, on the walls, on the stairs…” yet he head a bump on the head, bruises on the arm, his face was sore. WTF? Doesn’t add up – unless you’re that kid filing a suit to get a big payday down the road.
2. They kept using the word “conviction”, yet didn’t bother to list which of the charges actually had a “conviction”. I’m sure the world doesn’t know that most of them were for underage.

It will be forgotten once football starts, provided any players don’t add to the “conviction” total.

by Tailgate Shogun on Jul 28, 2008 7:37 AM EDT   0 recs

I didn’t see the show, but this sounds like any normal hack job piece the news media does.

PSU may have more problems than they had historically, or it might just be a fact that the reporting of events is better now. 20 years ago there would have been a small blurb in a paper in State College about a player getting arrested. Now that same story is posted on the internet then linked around the US. Something that historically would get no circulation now gets a lot of circulation. So you know immediately that there is more scrutiny of everything and no reporter will ever discuss that. Also, I believe the police were a lot more lenient 20 years ago. They used to just send everyone home with little to no punishment, now they arrest everyone and let the lawyers sort it out. So you get more arrests simply because the police are not letting people go, but the conviction rate is exceedingly low.

Also, there is no punishment for the media for getting something wrong. So OTL totally blows this story getting no facts right, using the straw man horse crap questions (“Some people say…”) and only selective reporting information. They won’t be punished for doing such and are free to do so again in the future. Reporters are lazy and this year PSU offered them the lowest hanging fruit.

Disappointing crap from our fans

I’m seeing nothing but apologism here.

1. Jones did write about Gelzheiser, who was indeed kicked out of school.

2. The apartment ‘fight’ is what they covered because it was, and I apparently need to tattoo this on the inside of your homer eyelids, JUST LIKE THE SHIT THAT MIAMI USED TO PULL. Thuggery. Gang tactics.

Getting into a fight always happened. But none of these former players admitted to getting half the team together to bust into a party and lay down some revenge assault (some of which didn’t even end up on target).

Until you guys get the difference, you’re going to look just as delusional as Nebraska fans apologizing for Lawrence Phillips who thought the media just had it in for Dr. Tom.

Grow up.
