Letter to Rich Scarcella of the Reading Eagle
After reading his article in the Reading Eagle, I sent him the following email. Was it over the top? Opinions?
Here's the article that bothered me:

I understand that you have a job to do but usually the Reading Eagle focuses on issues that have a local tie or generates local interest. I understand why we had to read about Michigan while Chad Henne was there but now that he's gone, I'm not sure why we have to read about Michigan Football.
Most of the Reading Eagle subscribers are Penn State fans as I'm sure you know. We live in an area with strong ties to Penn State for obvious reasons. Having said that, I don't think we need to read about Michigan in our local paper any longer. The national media hypes Michigan Football enough for all of us.
All I ask is that the PA media and in this case, Reading media start showing some loyalty to a program that deserves it.....Penn State. Let ESPN and the folks in Michigan write fluff pieces about their underachieving program that has 1/2 a Mythical National Championship and 1 undefeated season since 1948!

Thank you
I used to live in Wyomissing and subscribe to the Eagle, so I know exactly what you mean.

No problem
We live in a community that has a large branch campus in PSU Berks. We also live in community that holds Penn State in general & Penn State football in particular in high regard. It’s time that the PA media starts catering to their readers who are loyal Penn State fans/alums! They need to recognize where their bread is buttered so to speak. Does Rich Scarcella really think that PSU fans want to read about a program that has become one of the 2 axises of evil since entering the Big Ten?? It’s like spitting in our face and laughing at us. It’s like pouring salt on the wound! I took it as a sign of disrespect to the viewers and subscribers of the Reading Eagle.
Let USA Today and other national media outlets talk about other programs!!

Interesting

One thing Ohio State does an excellent job of is appealing to the entire state, and really expanding their fan base beyond their alumni. I think that Penn State’s alumni are more insular, almost taking the position of screw everybody that didn’t go to Penn State. I am probably as guilty of that as anyone.
Don’t get me wrong, I think a lot of Ohio State’s antics, The Ohio State University, chief among them, are incredibly lame. But I’d like to see more focus on the Pennsylvania that is part and parcel of Penn State, I think it would help us in more ways than one.
