Big Ten Beer Comparison
Was going through SI.com and ran across a pretty funny article comparing big ten and beer. They pretty much went through every program and labeled a beer that was most comparable for the program. Not sure about PSU being Rolling Rock. I do like Michigan States beer comparison and description though. I'm trying to think of a better comparison for us, any suggestions?

great idea
for a blogpost, but the only thing I really agreed with are the breasts of the waitress in the picture.
I think you have to say Penn State is nothing other than good old “lager”: Yuengling. The oldest brewery in the country; oldest coach in the world. Solid, no frills taste; growing popularity up and down the east coast.

I agree
with one thing in this article….Bud Light is better than Miller Lite.

bud light, coors light, miller light WTF
It sounds more like he is describing a women’s ballerina league. This guy knows nothing about beer, or else he is a college student. For PSU I agree, I like Yuenling. Maybe black and tan for the new HD offense coming up (or a reference to the Jay/Obama connection). I would also suggest Sam Adams lager, it is good, understated and the guy on the bottle must be about 130 years old by now.
Ohio State can be budweiser, I just don’t care for it, leaves a bad taste in your mouth. But they seem to always outsell Miller and any of the other beers in my B10 list.
Michigan can be Miller, again a crappy beer for a crappy school.
Wisconsin gets a Milwaukee brew, and in my opinion nothing says working class B10 grind out the football like Old Milwaukee.
For Michigan State I would like to go back to the coach who slaps himself and the team that just can’t quite get it done. For MSU I choose a Bartles and James wine cooler, it’s fruity and after 1 or 2 you cannot drink anymore, thus leaving the buzz undone.
Iowa can be a Troegs dreamweaver wheat. It is the last one left in the variety pack, and I guess I will drink it since there is nothing but my wife’s cooking wine left (I only have a drinking problem on the weekends).
Northwestern can be a barley wine of your choosing, the wannebe snobs can’t actually have wine because they’re in the B10, not the Ivy League.
Illinois can have one of the new Miller/Coors beers with Lime added, very cool last year.
Indiana, they cannot have guiness as the guy in the article suggests, I think a Fat Tire would be fine because I really like when we play them, just like I enjoy a fat tire.
I will stick with Minnesota from the article “Minnesota – An Empty Beer Mug Full of Tears. Why did Lou Holtz leave us! Boho..wah! MOMMY! MAKE HIM COME BACK!!”.
Purdue can be Sierra Nevada, smooth and hoppy, sort of like their offense. Basically any Purdue can be any beer because once you dump a shot of whiskey into it what difference does it really make.
Boom goes the dynamite.

I was under...
The impression that they were talking about the most popular beer in said school. In which case, Rolling Rock is false.
But a good beer that describes us would be Yuengling I think.

Michigan
I’d compare Michigan to Arrogant Bastard Ale, but just because of the name. The beer is actually pretty good.

I would have to agree
with Yuengling being us. But what I did like about that article was the large frat party reference and Iowa being Natty

Minnesota
My favorite is Minnesota’s: “An Empty Beer Mug Full of Tears.” haha

It's gotta be Yuengling
1. America’s Oldest Brewery – JoePa is the oldest Head Coach
2. Yuengling used to be sold nationally but now has regionalized – PSU used to recruit nationally but now has since regionalized
3. Both Yuengling and PSU can be found in the mountains of Pennsylvania
4. Yuengling is no frills and just plain good – PSU’s uniforms are no frills and just plain good
5. Too many Yuenglings often leads to trouble with the police – too many PSU football players often times leads to trouble with the police
Rolling Rock? Come on! It’s definitely Yuengling!!

Question?????
When was Yuengling ever sold nationally. I am pretty sure that it used to only be sold in the Northeast because of the Pottsville brewery being fairly small. Recently Yuengling doubled capacity at its Pottsville location and purchased an old Stroh’s brewery in Tampa. Since the Tampa location has opened up…...Yuengling is sold all up and down the east coast (except Georgia because of demad) and in some parts of Bama and Miss. Living in Georgia I usually stock in in SC or NC when I am out of state. Its good…...but when you compare to the stuff in PA it is not the same (has to be the water)!

I don't know if national is the right word but....
Yuengling used to be sold in a lot more states than it is now. The company made a decision to scale down their production a few years ago in order to offer their beers in areas around their breweries.

Plus...
Yuengling is not sold in the entire state of WV.
And do we really recruit much from WV? That part I’m not sure about. If so, add that to ReadingNitFan’s list of reasons.

Rolling Rock
Rolling Rock has its place in Happy Valley. When I was there, it was the cheapest keg you could get. And I drank a few cases of Rolling Rock pony bottles at the ‘Skeller during case race or just because. However, I must agree that Yuengling more accurately describes the school and the program.

in a tragedy...
you can no longer get a “box of rocks” at the skeller or anywhere else. When anheuser (sp?) busch bought out rolling rock, they discontinued the ponies.

That is a tragedy....
Maybe they should let InBev buy them out. Maybe it would result in better beer. I do like the Green Light though…not bad.

Definitely Not Rolling Rock
I had a Rolling Rock a couple of months ago, the AB Rolling Rock.
Tasteless. I think they just put Bud Light in the bottles at the New Jersey plant and called it a day.
This is not the Rolling Rock I used to know.
Penn State is Yuengling, definitely. Good, hard working, every day beer that doesn’t blow its own horn.
Michigan, in that sense, would be Heineken. Overpriced, overhyped, doesn’t travel well, but has effective marketing. .

AB is screwing everything up
I completely agree that the new RR sucks! They f’d with the Stella formula to…..what used to be a good import tastes like a watered down version of its former self. Shouldn’t the feds be opposing such acquistions under antitrust or at least under anti-taste legislation???

Michigan..
I would have to say Michigan is Michelob Ultra. Their new advertisements revolve around beer drinkers with an active lifestyle wanting a light, low carb, low calorie beer. After the novelty wears off, you just want to go back to an old-school beer that actually has taste. It’s kind of analogous to Michigan’s new quick, lean Rich Rod offense. I can imagine their S&C coach Mike Barwis pushing Michelob Ultra…
Rich Rod will be a short-lived fad.
