I remember nothing about him

and he was playing less than 10 years ago, now that’s forgettable. Or I am losing my brain.
But I sure remember watching kerry collins, wally richardson, and others in the past so I will blame him.

I don't know, Mello Yello is pretty awful. What's the worst that could happen?

FWIW

Kevin Thompson could take a hit better than any quarterback I’ve ever seen. He threw the deep ball to Chafe Fields against Miami in 1999 too, and he was absolutely leveled on that play.

I think....

I know what you are talking about…it wasn’t JayPa that hurt KT, it was Kenny Jackson that got in the tussle w/ KT.

by SweepTheLeg on Aug 14, 2008 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really?

The rumor I’ve always seen was that he hurt his hand the night before the Alamo Bowl because he hit JayPa after JayPa stormed into a strip club and confronted Kevin.

What’s the story?

Not sure, but I think...

You have the wrong person in the strip club.

I hate to bring this "blog" up...

but on JayPa’s Barry Obama blog, “Kevin Thompson” left the following comment:

Remember that night in San Antonio? Was that girl hot or what!? No hard feelings, man. You are one heck of a fighter! Keep up the good work with the QBs.

Ok

Someone is going to have to fill me in because I’ve never heard this before. Here is what I know so far

Jay Paterno + Kevin Thompson + Strip Club + girl = ???

I don’t know what ??? is, but it must equal hilarity.

by BSD on Aug 14, 2008 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here's what I heard

The night before the Alamo Bowl game against Texas A&M, Kevin was out past curfew. JayPa found him at a strip club and burst in and starting screaming at Kevin about how he’s the reason why they’re playing in this s-itty bowl. Then apparently Kevin decked JayPa and broke/hurt his hand which is why he didn’t play in the game as a last second scratch and Casey did play.

All I know

Is that there is a Strip Club in San Antonio that has a $5 Ribeye Steak that is freaking awesome. I wonder if it was there?

by jesse. on Aug 14, 2008 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

honestly

Do people really go to strip clubs for the good food and stay for the naked ladies? My mind is reeling trying to combine a good steak house with a seedy strip bar. I just couldn’t handle the thought of eating something in that situation.

I don't know, Mello Yello is pretty awful. What's the worst that could happen?

That's what I thought until I saw the steaks.

and don't get me wrong

this was not steakhouse, it was strip club that served food. But the steak we got there was better than anything we got on the Riverwalk, and about one third the price.

We donated those savings to the Sister of Mercy Orphanage of course…

Here is the story

KT saw some coaches leaving a strip club and they have been drinking.

KT did not think that was appropriate behavior and got into it w/ a coach and got hurt. The story was kept hush/hush and different versions slipped out, this is the version I heard and believe.

No one involved will discuss so the real story will probably never get told, but the above is very close to the real deal.

watching him during a Browns Preseason game a couple of years ago. How that guy stuck around the NFL for a little, the world will never know.

I remember

having early breakfasts in the Pollock dining commons as a sophmore and watching sportscenter on the same tv as Kevin Thompson. It was such a weird experience to watch someone else watch themselves on tv while they were eating breakfast.

I don’t know if it still works that way, but the breakfasts in Pollock used to be alright. The football team would almost all be there early, after morning workouts, and some guy would make you an omlette to order.

Thompson was playing for the Cologne Centurians

on loan from the Buffalo Bills a few years back.

That Chafie Play

Was most excellent. I was there in the Orange Bowl that day, and he ran right towards us in the PSU section. Unbelievable. I thought for sure we were destined to make a second road trip that year—to the Sugar Bowl for the MNC. Alas, sigh.

Then we exited to find our car had been towed. Let me tell you, waiting for a tow truck outside the Orange Bowl as the sun sets is not a day in the park. Which didn’t stop the people who actually lived in the park! I never knew grocery carts could be so imposing. If they hadn’t left the lights on in the OB for hours after the game, I’m thinking I never would’ve made it out…..

The benchmark QB

He was average in every way. I’d think 50% of college qb’s are better than him, 50% are worse. He’s been the benchmark I set other PSU quarterbacks to since his time.

I often thought of him last year when looking at The Great Unnamed One’s performance behind center. Would PSU have lost the Illinois game with a “Kevin Thompson”? Sigh.

by Cairo on Aug 14, 2008 12:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

For that matter

Thompson would’ve beat Michigan, too, I’m pretty sure he would have made the short pass to a wide-open receiver in the endzone.

When watching the Great Unnamed One last year I often thought of the previous #14 at QB, Wally Richardson (the last Penn State QB to beat Michigan). I honestly think Wally would’ve been 11-2 last year.

Defense and a shitty game plan lost the Michigan game last year....

As I was sitting at Michigan last year, me and my fellow PSU fans groaned as PSU went into ultra conservative mode. Also everyone knew that Hart was going to get the football except Tom Bradly who refused to pull the linebackers and safeties up. Not saying that Morelli was fantastic at Michigan but a lot of other stuff went wrong in that game!

I thought only safeties played 15 yards off the ball?

by pic15 on Aug 14, 2008 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To be fair

Mike Hart only averaged 3.5 YPC that game. But, yeah their offense was on the field all day. I swear JoePa’s butthole puckers up every time he sees those helmets with the yellow jockstraps on them.

by speedomike on Aug 14, 2008 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Michigan

What killed it for me was watching Ryan Mallet keep dropping back on 3rd and 7, locking in on Manningham, watching him run 10 yards down field, and just tossing him the ball with our defensive back giving him a ten yard cushion. I was so mad I took a picture of it from my seat in the stands.

by BSD on Aug 14, 2008 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Look at that

Ten yards off the ball and he’s already backing up before the ball is snapped.

by BSD on Aug 14, 2008 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To be fair to this pic, Michigan is on their 3 yard line. Probably not the best time to try and jam him at the line and hope he doesn’t get past you for a 97 yard touchdown.

But, this happened all game long, so I get it.

by spakajewia on Aug 14, 2008 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

For 110,000 people, I was not impressed by the noise at all. They did little cheers during the timeouts that were pretty loud, but when the action started back up it went back to being quiet again. The student section didn’t do anything to intimidate us.

That pic just made me vomit.

That is the best-case scenario for a qb & receiver…to start their route without interference at the line. I mean, why try and throw of their timing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(for extra sarcasm effect)

judging by that pic. But it turned out that most of the action was at the other end of the stadium all day.

by BSD on Aug 15, 2008 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

Thompson was pretty much the typical PSU quarterback — tall, overhand delivery, feet of stone, tough. What was his record as a starter, 18-6 or something?

Blogging about D.C. Baseball since April '04. Penn State alum. Also partial to the Washington Capitals, New York Yankees and Yale football.

by WFY on Aug 14, 2008 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thompson's stats

I was always a big KT fan, actually. I thought he was highly underrated as PSU QB’s go.

1998 Thompson 1691 yds 121-226 53.5% 6 TD 8 INT
1999 Thompson 1916 yds 133-242 55.0% 13 TD 9 INT

Okay, maybe not. But I have good Kevin Thompson memories.

by psu on Aug 14, 2008 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gelzheiser

That dude was tough. I remember they said he tore his MCL in 1994 preseason and would miss the entire year. But a week later he told the coaches it didn’t hurt and he suited up and played the entire season.

The 6-foot-2, 235-pound fifth-year senior from Pittsburgh played his final season wearing a bulky brace that held his right knee together. During preseason camp in late August, Gelzheiser suffered a medial collateral ligament tear to that knee and was forced to miss the season-opener at Minnesota Sept. 3.

“It was miserable,” Gelzheiser said. “I had all my stuff there and I was going to sneak on, wear a different jersey or something. It was better that I didn’t play, from what the doctors tell me. But it was hard that I didn’t play. I thought I could’ve.”

In a week’s time, the tender knee suddenly healed well enough for Gelzheiser to suit up against No. 14 Southern Cal in the home opener. He responded with a team-high 10 tackles, including a fumble recovery that set up the Lions’ second touchdown in a 38-14 win.
