Devon Still Injured
Yeah, this sucks.
Devon Still's season has been halted before it even began.
Again.
Following a year away from the gridiron due to a torn ACL during the preseason of his freshman season, Still's career will once again be delayed. This time, it's due to a broken leg that he suffered during a scrimmage this afternoon.
According to BWI writer Sean Fitz's sources, Still was involved in a pile up and got landed on by one of his Nittany Lion teammates.
The extent of the injury remains uncertain at this time.

Goddammit.
First, good luck to Devon in his recovery. This truly blows.
There seem to be two camps on the message boards about this — it’s either, “OH MY GOD WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE1!” or, “whatever, we have great DT depth.” IMO, it’s a lot closer to the former than the latter. Basically, we’ve lost three quality DT’s for a variety of reasons. That leaves a lot of guys who are either coming off injuries or haven’t next to no experience. Personally, I was counting on the defensive line to limit the time opposing quarterbacks had to pick apart our corners and safeties, as I think that’s the weakness in this defense. These setbacks with the DT’s are a big, big deal. We’re at the point where we really, REALLY can’t afford to lose anyone else up there.
It seems rather obvious, I know, but we’re one or two injuries away from this being a very ordinary defense.

I’m with you on this one RUTS – our DT situation is rapidly approaching “Fucktacularly bad” status. Wonder if we see a switch from any OL players currently buried on the depth chart?

How hard
Can it be to put in some fat run stopper to plug up a couple of holes for 10-20 plays.
This is PSU, all of these kids played both OL/DL most of their lives, can’t they get a large 3rd strong OL guy? I know it’s not that easy but I think RUTS has 3 years of eligability left, he can easily get back to the 300lb mark in 2 weeks, TS will just need to make some more deep fried white castle burgers.

Chima Okoli
He will be a difference maker this year. Lock it up.
He’s put on plenty of weight and has been getting great reviews in practice, much like Still. Remember Still hasn’t seen the field either.

Good point
He was on the JC transfers correct? He now has a great opportunity to do something special.

Nope
He RS’d last year as a freshman. So he’s an RS fresh that will get some time as the 5th DT. Poti and McCormick were the JUCOs.

Wait – 300lbs? That might mean RUTS has to drop weight, not gain it.
While we’re having deep fried milkshakes, we’ll fix RUTS up with some garden salad and tofu dogs.

I’ve been working on a good batter for envy, but I think with some sea salt we can probably use it for hate. Just need to get the oil good and hot.

Still
Relax. We are fine at DT. We have 3 guys that could be all Big Ten11 in the next 2 years. A redshit Freshman who is ready to play and tough kid ( McEowen.)

And there's the problem.
Less margin for error from the offense.

Recovery
If it is simply a broken leg, his season won’t be over and he could be back sometime in October. I doubt we would miss him much in the first four weeks of the season anyway. Lets just hope he is back by the time the team takes a trip to Camp Randall.

Big Impact on First Four Weeks
Not on PSU, but on Devon. He would have benefited greatly by being able to play in the first four weeks. Picked up a lot of experience. That will end up hurting PSU all year even after he returns.
Also, since he can’t really excersie he won’t be in as good of shape when he comes back. He should be back by around mid-October or so. But with Wisconsin, Michigan and OSU, I’m guessing he will have limited playing time in those games. Realistically I can’t see him having an impact until November.
The D-line was supposed to benefit because of depth, and now with that gone I think the rushing defense is going to suffer. It will be interesting to see what teams take advantage of this.

It all
depends on what leg he broke. A leg break can go from 4-6 weeks or take all year.

I think this is a bad situation...
Not only because of our lack of depth at the D-Line position that it causes, but we are going to have an inexperienced LB staring this year due to the injury of Sean Lee. Inexperienced/tired D-line + inexperienced LB = recipe for disaster. The defensive linemen’s primary responsibility is to take up blockers and take up space to allow the LB’s to run around free and destroy the guy with the ball. Without the neccessary caliber or number of people to play the D-line position, it is going to create a huge problem in that blockers will be able to get to our Linebackers, and if that happens, you are counting on a safety to make the tackle, and if safetys are making most of the tackles on running plays, you are in for a long season. I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but i just think this is a huge loss for the defense. I hope he heals fast.

This blows
I was so excited to see Devon. He is an impact DL there is no doubt in my mind, but he has been set back just prior to the season in consecutive years with devastating injuries. I believe it was his left knee that he tore up, does anyone know what leg he broke? I will continue to expect big things from Devon and also pray for him, he doesn’t deserve this! Quick Recovery Devon and best of luck.
Now, the DTs we do have:
Jared Odrick: Should be 110% by now. Was ready to break out last year prior to injury.
Abe Koroma: Was “supposed” to be a starter prior to getting injured in preseason practices and having surgery on his foot. Played last year, got lots of experience, especially in the Alamo Bowl against Texas A&M.
Ollie Ogbu: I really like this kid, I think he is probably our best penetrating DT from what I could tell but he was inconsistent. He proved that he could remain injury free though and got a lot of experience last year. Kid was prep so you know he has benefited from another year with LJ, another year of food, another year of strength and conditioning AFTER having played and played with flashes of brilliance.
Tom McEowen: Should be completely healthy (110%) after being hurt prior to last year during winter workouts. Was down near 275-280 and I’m not sure what his weight is now but he may turn out to be our most impressive interior pass rusher. LJ and others were real high on him prior to his injury. He could probably help inside/out, and with Maurice Evans at 6’3-6’2.5 270 pounds I wouldn’t be surprised to see Evans & McEowen inside on some 3rd downs with Hayes/Latimore or Latimore/Maybin at DE.
Chimaeze Okoli: Another player that should be 110% by now. Impressive size, athleticism to play DE and was told to come in with that goal in mind. MEANING, he got down to about 275 or so and then was built back up the right way at DT. 6’4.5-6’4 287-295 pounds now and completely healthy.
We have 5 DTs that would see the field at another other program in the Big 10. We are STILL DEEP, even after booting 2 DTs and Still breaking his leg. We have two players (possibly three: Evans, McEowen & maybe Latimore) that could play inside/out for situational purposes. Evans can play inside on 3rd downs, McEowen can play outside and I don’t know if the coaches are comfortable moving Latimore around since he suffered a concussion but if he were capable at 6’5 265 he could possibly play inside on 3rd downs…depending on how he plays the run of course, we can’t just get blasted off the ball. We absolutely must stay healthy though, and there is NO WAY that we can lose anyone else, NO WAY! :( This defensive line is still ridiculously sick, and the adversity/injuries should draw this group even closer together and send them on a mission to prove that Penn State reloads.
The way I see it, we still have 5 DTs and 3 have plenty of experience…and we have as many as 7 bodies for situational DT play. Freshmen James Terry was recruited as a DT but last I heard he was working with the offensive line, freshmen Brandon Ware who is a DT but needs massive conditioning work & freshmen OT Deon’Tae Panell. All three played both ways in H.S. but Pannell was a standout OT/DT at 6’5-6’4.5 305 pounds and played basketball as well as got involved with track. There was talk that coaches watned him at DT but he was starting off at LT for now, with injuries and dismissals that could change; especially IF (god forbid) we lost anyone else. We have Jerome Hayes and he is 110% at DE, Aaron Maybin at DE, Maurice Evans at DE, Josh Gaines at DE, Kevion Latham at DE and a boatload more. I’m still excited as hell about this DL, and still don’t worry about the CBs like most. Wallace/Davis will be better than King/Sargaent.

Deep Fried Hate
Let’s fry the Injury Bug and gobble it down, never to bother us again….shite, I hate losing this kid again—was sooo looking forward to seeing what he could do. Real bummer. Yes, we’re dwindling now at the DT position. Nowhere near fuckacularly bad, mind you, but dwindling depth takes away some of LJ’s plans for multiple rotations. I’m still high on one of my favorite players, who is surprisingly very infrequently named—Ollieollie Ogbu. We’ll now have to rely on him, Odrick, Abe, Chima and McEowen (I hope he’s truly over whatever pouting he did last year).
