Shhhh....
Don’t tell any non Penn Staters this, but LaVar Arrington is the most overrated linebacker who ever played at Penn State.
For the Glory; National Champions 1982, 1986, 1994,
Overrated is a little harsh…
He lacked some on the field discipline and played recklessly but he was a solid linebacker and a spectacular athlete. He went on to the NFL and had a nice start before injuries slowed and then ultimately ended his career.
agreed....
I wouldn’t even put LaVar in the top 5 of PSU linebackers.
i was hoping for someone other than LaVar at 11, but who else is there?
Pat Devlin in '08
Give me....
11 Poz’s or Sean Lee’s on my team over 11 LaVar’s and I will beat you every time. LaVar lacked the heart, committment and leadership that Poz and Lee have
Pat Devlin in '08
that would be...
a never ending game deadlocked in a 0 – 0 tie…
Most undisciplined, maybe
But not most overrated. I think Gino Capone would like to have a word with you.
Lavar is probably my favorite PSU player of all time. I never saw a defensive player wreak as much havoc as him on every single play. He frustrated the coaches to no end, but once they figured out to play defense with 10 guys and let Lavar run around and do whatever he wanted it was the most beautiful display of defense I think I’ve ever seen at Penn State.

I'm sorry
but where were your seats on November 13, 1999? Because mine were in the senior section, and I can still smell the stench of that defensive performance nine years later.
For the Glory; National Champions 1982, 1986, 1994,
I sure do...
I was in the freshmen section; that was the start of the melt down to end the season. turns out UM had a qb that is pretty good now… I think, but not sure, that was also the game lavarr met the A-train at the line of scrimmage and a-train went backwards… although lavarr hurt his shoulder and saw less and less time the rest of the year. is the accurate?
Maybe i don’t understand the term overrated? Arrington did not receive any unwarranted hype. He was a physical beast and had a presence that drove OC’s nuts. If LaVarr wasn’t injury plagued and made 8 consecutive Pro bowls would you still be saying he was overrated? i don’t think we can use his NFL career as a piece of the assessment.
My definition of overrated = J. Larrinitis (spelling?)
Laura
Maybe the most over-rated player of this season. I can’t wait for him to perform on par with one of our RS freshman, only to have the ESPN analysts continue to hype him up.
His dad was a wrestler.
Not sure if anybody heard about that.

I knew it was Animal...
how could you not? I just threw Flair out their because he is an annoying nancy boy. However, now I wish I would have picked Steele. Is he the model used by the Pixies for “Come on Pilgrim”

Actually
I was at work listening to the game on the radio. So they still remain the greatest PSU defense I’ve ever seen. :)

Get a grip man
I didn’t realize Lavar was responsible for the play of the entire D that game.
The facts are clear. Lavar single handedly won games for Penn State either by making the big sack, INT, forcing fumbles and scoring, or simply blocking FGs in critical moments. He even jumped out to cover WRs several times when PSU was caught in the wrong defensive scheme.
A much as I love Poz and Connor, I never saw them take over a game like Lavar did. Not just make a great tackle, but literally change the course of the game. To this day, I have never seen a college LB do the things Lavar did in 1999.
I'll get no grip.
I am happy to blast the best cheerleader to ever suit up as a linebacker for Penn State, Brandon Short, as well.
That defense couldn’t pull out the Minnesota (I had Bob Dylan tickets that night, thanks for screwing that up for me too) game, got steamrolled with the game on the line against Michigan and then mailed it in against Michigan State. Highlights of LaVar Arrington making admittedly great plays against crappy teams are never going to make that go away for me.
I’m willing to admit that this may be irrational, but from 1984-1999 I maybe missed 10 Penn State home games. I was born in State College, that was my senior year at Penn State, and I will never shake the feeling that those guys let me down personally.
Three games at the end of the season that the Defense could have won, three losses. That ain’t entertaining no matter how fast you run or how high you jump. At least it wasn’t for me.
For the Glory; National Champions 1982, 1986, 1994,
Ouch
Dragging Brandon Short into it as well. My god, man, you’re still hurting. I can feel your pain, Jesse. I wish I could console you. Don’t know how. And Bob Dylan tix to boot! Gawd, let’s get this man an undefeated season and a national championship to wash away this pain. In the meantime, just let it out, brother. Keep letting it out….

So Jesse....
If you’re throwing Short and Arrington’s names out there….i guess you should include this one too!?! He was never close to being as good as both of those guys….but he did kick someone’s ass at a bar and then tell Joe about it the next day. You gotta give him a little credit for that one…

if its any consolation
bob dylan wasn’t as cracked up as he used to be. i saw him at the bjc (supposed to be @ medlar but some effin hurricane ruined that) in 06, and i was highly disappointed. i don’t know which wagon he fell off, but it was a long and hard fall.
For the glory
Well this was six years earlier than that (at least)
He didn’t sound great but he still puts on a great show, a real professional. Kind of like seeing Sinatra in his 70’s and 80’s. Not a strong a singer as he was in the 1960’s but he makes up for it by playing with a strong band. I went that night, but I was too pissed to enjoy it. Phil Lesch from the Dead opened for him.
I’m pretty sure it was homecoming too.
That is basicly the most disappointing day in my four years at Penn State. I still get bummed thinking about it.
For the Glory; National Champions 1982, 1986, 1994,
And I'm bummed
reading about your bummedness….cheer up, meng. A new season is not far away….

For some reason his name immediately comes to mind when discussing overrated players. Actually I know the reason, almost every tackle he made was 7-10 yards downfield. Sorta like a certain Buckeye LB huh?

Great Picture....
This looks like the play where he scared Drew Brees into fumbling the ball…
by Stately NOVA Lion on Aug 19, 2008 12:06 PM EDT reply actions
Yep...
I’m almost positive that’s the play. Living in Indiana (and now in Alabama), my chances to see Penn State in person were quite limited, but I was in Ross-Ade that day. Nasty, cold, cloudy. And the D came up with a 4th and goal stop to save the win.

I too was at the game....
It was ridiculously cold. Not Green Bay cold, but cold enough.
It was a great game, and I remember the Purdue fans being great as well.

Strangest thing
I was walking down the street in Niagra Falls (my grilfriend was only 20) and I saw a drunk girl wearing a Penn State sweatshirt, I asked if he she know the score of the game. She told me to follow her, and she took us to this bar that was full, I mean full (about 150 people) of underage kids who had driven up from State College to watch the game on TV and get drunk in a bar.
It was totally unexpected and a ton of fun.
For the Glory; National Champions 1982, 1986, 1994,
After all these years
I still get a kick out of Joe Paterno.
For the Glory; National Champions 1982, 1986, 1994,
that was..
utterly, utterly amazing.
i’m hoping for bobby engram tomorrow….
This is REQUIRED viewing....

God I love Joe Paterno.

Looks like it should have.
For the Glory; National Champions 1982, 1986, 1994,
brains, mmm need more brains.
I don't know, Mello Yello is pretty awful. What's the worst that could happen?
Overrated? Perhaps.
But LaVar was definitely one of the most entertaining linebackers to watch during a game.
The ultimate LaVar play
was him hurdling the D-line and O-line to squash the QB or RB.
(Obviously I don’t remember the specifics of the play, but that one was AMAZING!)
Any video links, anyone?
it was the RB
against Illinois in Beaver Stadium… simply amazing!!
was this also....
the same game he blocked a field goal attempt with his chest?

Leaping LaVar
I think that was the Pitt game.
LaVar was always leaping over stuff. I remember a few plays where he was blitzing and a poor running back tried to take his legs out. He just jumped over the guy and went on the make the sack. There was one time against Pitt the quarterback threw a ball maybe five feet over his head. LaVar jumped straight up from a flat footed position and made the interception. That ball must have been 12 feet in the air. And the Illinois 4th down stop was amazing. I was sitting in the student section right on the line of scrimmage for that play.

Tipped pass
He also tipped a pass that got taken in for six if I am not mistaken. LaVar was a real liability in pass coverage.

Don't knock that Punter.
It doesn’t take a lot of balls to crush a defensless player half your size, punching a bully in the face however, that’s something I can get behind.
Pitt didn’t take any shit at all from Penn State that day.

definately agree
Lavar was a hybrid of beast and human, and those pictures are crazy. My favorite PSU memory was Lavar jumping over the line to stop the RB on 4th and 1, but all those times he had a pick or blocked field goal…outrageous. He was a damn good running back too. I think in HS he ran for 2000 yards
Your description made me think of
what a Lavar/Serena Williams love child would have been.

got us three tickets. he’s a successful dude and bought them off a colleague in NY…sounds a little shady, yes. they’re supposed to be good seats too (club level). we’ll see…
then i’ll be watching the Oreg. St. vs PSU game somewhere in NYC. I wonder if there are penn state bars up there…?

I've never had a problem
finding a place to watch Penn State in NYC, but it has been a while and I don’t have any specific suggestions.
For the Glory; National Champions 1982, 1986, 1994,
TONIC East...
On the corner of 29th and 3rd Ave. is THE Penn State Bar.
It’s 3 Floors, but you better get there early if you want a seat, and I hope you like crowds because you will feel like your at Beaver Stadium. Wear your gear. They’ve got tons of HD Flatscreens of all sizes, and they all will have the game on with the sound.
The only word to describe it is INSANE, especially on Big Game days, although in my opinion every game day’s a BIG game day.
It might be a little overwhelming. Let’s just say they call in extra bouncers on PSU Game Day Saturdays. But you should check it out at least once.

Never Liked LaVar
I remember watching lavar tear up teams when he was in high school before I ever became a Penn State fan. There were times when teams just simply could not tackle him on offense. When I heard he was going to Penn State, I thought they had a gem at RB. He turned out to be ok on the defensive side of the ball too I guess.
He was a great player and had some of the most impressive raw talent you’ll ever see.
They used to show an WPIAL championship game
on the local access channel in Pittsburgh. Lavar’s team’s rentire offensive was give the ball to Lavar because he’s bigger, stronger and faster than everybody else in the league. It was about as scientific as Joe Pesci’s gambling plan in Casino, and it worked just as well.
For the Glory; National Champions 1982, 1986, 1994,
The problem with LaVar Arrington
is he’ll always be associated with the ‘99 team and what it failed to do. There were some great games and spectacular plays to be sure, and I wouldn’t call him overrated, but that defense as a group didn’t get it done at the end of the year and I was so let down by that season’s ending that I didn’t even watch the 24-0 win over aTm in the Alamo bowl. That’s the only bowl game I never watched in the last 20 years.
