Interest in Penn State Bar Post?
I was tossing around an idea for a compilation post of Penn State bars that have been visited by the readers of this site. I don't know if there is enough interest to make this worthwhile, but that's the reason for this post.
Update: We're going to run with this thing, but we need your help. For those of you who commented below, or those of you reading this now and want to help, please fill out the following and email me: thebigeleventh@gmail.com (link to email address is also at the bottom of the page). Please provide the following:
Name of bar
Street Address
Web Address, if available
Parking/Metro Suggestions
Food/Beer - Tell us about their best bar food and any drink specials you take advantage of.
TV Setup - Convince us the view is good enough to warrant a trip off of the couch.
Seating/Atmosphere - How early do you have to arrive to get a seat? does the place get crowded? what do they do to feed your addiction (blue band music, signs, chants, ect.)?
One Final Note - Anything you need to tell us: info about the bar, the owner, the bartenders, any good advice about when to get there, when to order, the best way to flag down a waitress...anything that you think your fellow BSD reader needs to know.
Thanks for the fanpost! Please do not post any content from a premium site that requires a subscription. Also, if you just want to share a link consider using fanshots instead. Thanks.

Great!
I think that’s a great idea – it could be really valuable for people that are just getting out of college and are moving to a new city/town. I live in Tulsa OK and I haven’t been able to find shit – maybe a PSU bar exists here. When I did a Co-Op in Fort Myers FL I found one of the finest PSU bars (Buckets) ever. That’s some quality knowledge for someone either moving there or on vacation!

HELL YEAH!
I can’t believe you know about ‘Buckets’.
I stumbled across that place in ‘05, heading back from the Orange Bowl. A friend in the Ft. Myers area mentioned it. It was packed with PSU fans the day after the big win, and that’s where I watched that sick USC/Texas game for the ages.
Which makes me think. Has there ever been a more exciting Bowl season then ’05? What a great group of games.

Sounds Good.
I actually just started a blog of my own and had this idea too. I was looking for something to pass the time before the first game. I look forward to seeing your list if PSU bars and see how it compares to mine. I should have mine up in a few days, please check it out.

Only way to see it live
I don’t know about other cable systems in and around D.C., but if you have Alexandria Comcast, I don’t believe you can see the game until 11 a.m. on Sunday.

are you sure
you don’t get 801-804? That seems to be the standard overflow placement.

I'll let you know
I have made inquiries with Comcast and the best i have gotten is “inconclusive.” It is largely a moot point since I will be at a baptism this Saturday, but the next time I should be able to watch it live.

Of course, even with BTN, this might be the only way to see the game live
On Alexandria, Va. Comcast, BTN is showing OSU. Unless there are overflow channels that I am not aware of, you will have to wait until 11 a.m. Sunday.

Rhino Bar
Is nuts! I love it there. I actually may even drive down from State College to DC to watch the Wisconsin game there.

Rhino's
I watched the PSU v. MSU game there in 2005. It was great, the place was filled with PSU fans. The only downfall was that we got there a few hours early and it was packed with OSU fans for the Michigan game. It felt kinda weird being the only blue jersey amongst a sea of red.

That Part's Kinda Cool
Love to see our ohio neighbors out reppin their squad! Brings sweet opportunities to remind them things like ‘scarlet ain’t a color’ and ‘brutus is a dork’ and ‘a buckeye is a useless nut’
Yeah, I gotta get back over there more this season. Carpool brought too many bad memories last fall. Plus, it’s always good to seize opportunities to bring Georgetown’s uppityness down a little by rockin my Connor jersey and pounding brews with other Lionheads.

on carpool
i live by it, and only would go there due to convenience. they constantly wait until the game starts, and then put the game on the tvs. we missed the first 5 minutes of psu/wisky due to this oversight. i
don’t get the chili dog. i missed the second half of the MSU game b/c of it.
will go to rhino this year.

At Rhino in 2005
They would not change the channel to the Penn State game until 3:30 or whenever, I so thought it would be funny to start at “CHAN-NEL SEV-EN” chant. It was fun, but the thinskinned bartender couldn’t handle it and told me to “expletive off.” I decided to not part with any more of money there. In fairness, the manager found out about it from my blog and invited me back, so I will give them another chance someday.

2007 Michigan Game
Every PSU game from 2005 to 2007 if I wasn’t at the game I watched it at Rhino. The place was great until 2007 when it started getting more and more packed with people who were there just to binge drink and not actually watch the game. Don’t get me wrong, I’m there to binge drink to but it doesn’t interfere with anyone else’s ability to watch the game.
Examples: 2007 during Wisconsin game, girl throwing up in a bowl on the floor directly behind me. 2007 during Michigan game, two guys pissing into pint glasses in the corner behind me and then leaving them on the table next to me. When I confronted them, they told me to mind my own business and wanted to fight me. Fortunately, they were asked to leave later on because they actually did get into a fight (and lost) but, that was the final straw. I’ll stick with Carpool or my house now.

Houston Area
A good tip is to always look for local chapters of the alumni association. I checked it out here in Houston and found out they have viewing parties every saturday at SRO Sports Bar and Cafe.
I have dish so I can watch the games on TV, but I’ll probably swing by to check out a game this year. If I do I can give a review.

I think it is a great IDEA
I live in Columbus now and all I got around me is OSU bars. Yeah they will play the PSU game when OSU is not on. They put it on the Big Screen until the OSU game is ready in pregame or postgame. So you get to watch 3/4 of the game.

Great Idea...
TONIC EAST in New York City has to be one of the best places to see a game outside of State College. It’s absolutely packed for every game.
Last year for the opener there was a line outside the bar at 10am for the Noon kick. Cowbells, chants, and general craziness.

I disagree… I rather the hole-in-the-wall tavern that I goto in Jersey City rather than goto Tonic. It is almost impossible to pay attention to the game with the amount of people that have no idea what is going on and who is winning the “Ohio-Penn State” game.

Hamilton Park Ale House
Not really a “Penn State” bar per say…. but last year (when we did not have the BTN), we used to go there and the bartender used to shut off all the music and put all the TVs to the PSU game. Not a big crowd at all, but my roommate and I go there for some away games. $10 buckets of Coors Lights, bar pies for $3, all apps are like $5. Great time there.

ST. LOUIS
Just an FYI for any Penn Stater or Fan in the St. Louis area, Johnny’s Restaurant and Bar has been the place for PSU football for the last 3 years…the PSU Alumni Association St.L Chapter has tons of events there during and after the season. The owner is a Notre Dame Guy, but def. is PSU friendly as he has converted one of the viewing rooms into a total PSU room, complete with neon Lion logo sign and cardboard Joe Pa…Tons of tv’s, great food, local flavor…

Well, then! Get yourself down there and make your rounds. Throw out your hand, ‘Gumbercules, Penn State fan since (year you became a fan), pleased to meet you.’ Maybe buy a round. Kick a buckeye in the nuts. Get, as the aussies say, ‘amongst it.’ Oh, and let us know how it goes.

Atlanta
I already emailed Kevin as directed by he is pparantly being a slacker. PSU bar in the Atl is Famour Pub in Tocco Hills. The PSU club is big in Atlanta and they usually get 200-250 for a game. There was more than that for ND last year and a bar white out was instituted. If you know Atlanta you know it is a pain to drive anywhere……..I could watch the game on game plan….but the atmosphere at this bar is worth the drive.

San Francisco, Fort Lauderdale, and Kansas City
San Francisco
Monaghan’s Bar at Pierce and Chestnut.
Watched the PSU-Iowa game there in 2007.
Smaller place, but filled with good Penn State fans, friendly bartenders, and located in a beautiful part of town. There’s a good burger place around the corner and they let you take food in. Relatively affordable considering it’s San Francisco. Apparently there’s another place in town with more room and TV’s, but I loved the atmosphere here. There were also a sizeable contingent of Texas A&M fans at the bar. Aggies that live in San Fran… I still can’t wrap my head around that one.
Fort Lauderdale
Can’t remember the name, but it’s near Sunrise Lane & and NE 9th St.
Watched the PSU-O$U game there in 2005. Yeah, that one.
What would happen if you condensed Pennsylvania in a 200 foot long street? You’d get this odd little corner of the world: a Primanti Brothers, a PSU bar, and Eagles bar, a Steelers bar, and a tattoo parlor to top it all off. Medium-sized place, but it was wall-to-wall PSU fans. An amazing environment to watch a game, but the game probably had something to do with it. Standard food and drinks, but why not go across the street to the Primanti Bros.?
Kansas City
Ugly Joe’s Sports Bar at 103rd and State Line Road (Missouri Side)
Watched about 25 games there.
Ugly Joe’s is the only place in the metro area that guarantees that they will show the PSU game, and they tend to show it on 2-3 projector screens with audio. Games like Coastal Carolina will attract 15-25 people, PSU-Ohio $tate will attract 50+ PSU fans. This is a Big Ten bar, so expect large numbers of Michigan, O$U, and Iowa fans watching their games across the bar. The VaTech folks also come here. Food and restrooms are greatly improved from years past, when this was pretty much a dive bar in a strip mall.
