We Know, It's Clark!

Since multiple people (myself included) are posting it in multiple threads, here's a shortcut: Joe Paterno has named Daryll Clark his opening day starter.

"We're gonna start Clark and play Devlin for sure, some...Clark's had a little bit more experience, he's had a good spring practice and a really good preseason, so we're gonna go with Clark, start him, but I don't want him looking over his shoulder."

Press conference audio here. Written recap here.

One somewhat revolting statement from Paterno -- he implied that Morelli's failures were due to his supporting cast: "He was a good quarterback...maybe didn't have quite the cast of characters around him that he could do some things easier."

That's not simply hindsight by Paterno. He said the same thing after the Illinois game. He's still protecting Morelli. Maybe that's admirable in a way, I don't know.

That Paterno comment about Morelli

is evidence he’s either completely senile or willing to destroy the program to make Jay look a little better. Even worse than his interview with ESPN, I think.

Well, it's understandable

You know how hard it is to run an offense that features a dominating offensive line, three WR’s who will end up being the three leaders in career PSU receptions, a tight end destined for the NFL, and two excellent running backs? That’s hard work, son!

He's still pushing another lie from last year

He still claims it was Jay who tried to talk him into pulling Morelli during the Michigan game, when it was actually Joe who wanted to play Clark.

And people wonder why most Penn State fans have lost faith in this coaching staff.

by Run Up The Score on Aug 26, 2008 3:48 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Says who?

What makes you so sure that Joe wanted to play Clark?

by speedomike on Aug 26, 2008 7:29 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's how I remember it.

That was the word eventually filtering out of Lasch in the devastation following the Michigan loss. Joe wanted Morelli pulled at halftime, and Jay talked him out of it. Now, the party line is that Jay wanted to pull Morelli but Joe was stubborn about it. Frankly, I’m amazed that no reporters called him out on it — not that Joe would give a direct answer.

I've heard otherwise

But, regardless, I am so glad that chapter is over.

by speedomike on Aug 27, 2008 10:17 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My recollection

I think it came out in a newspaper article after the Alamo Bowl. Joe was doing one of his alumni fundraiser events and he told the crowd he wanted to give Clark a few snaps in the Michigan game and Jay talked him out of it.

Supporting Cast

So I guess we’re looking at a 9-4 year again, huh? I mean, since the supporting cast is basically the same, Clark would have to be exponentially better than Morelli for us to improve.

That Morelli comment really sucks...

…that is a low blow to all the guys who busted their asses for the past two years only to have Morelli throw away a half dozen games or so.

I honestly don’t think I’ve been as mad at him as I am now…what a jackass.

by immikefazz on Aug 26, 2008 4:02 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed.

I know there’s a tendency to say, “oh, well, you can’t take anything seriously that he says at a press conference,” but…that statement’s pretty deplorable. He has absolutely no reason to throw the rest of the team under the Big Blue School Bus.

by Run Up The Score on Aug 26, 2008 4:07 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well then

Who didn’t see this coming?

by BSD on Aug 26, 2008 4:18 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I can't wait for the first snap

Maybe we can look past the Morelli years, at least we will have something new to complain about. I think Joe has shown in the past he has no qualms about throwing the team or certain players under the bus. I think it is his perverse way to motivate them. While at PSU I had some good friends who played and they said Joe would say things like this to motivate guys. He would tell the media one thing and the team the complete opposite.

I don't know, Mello Yello is pretty awful. What's the worst that could happen?

He's also

A well-educated ivy-league lawyer.

Joe, even at 81, is sharp when it comes to PR. He is a master of perception and misconception, and I don’t believe he says anything that isn’t carefully crafted. Hell even is road-rage incident was witty as hell.

That being said, I think his master plan is to secure a career for his idiot, deadbeat son (no not that one, the other one…). And he is now working as hard at winning as he is at setting a public relations tone for his son to ride out.

by millzners on Aug 26, 2008 5:32 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I was already corrected on that one!

He didn’t go to law school. But the rest of your point still stands. Criticism of Morelli is criticism of Jay. And we can’t have that.

by Run Up The Score on Aug 26, 2008 7:22 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he's not defending morelli

he’s defending his decision to keep morelli in.

"That's a [expletive] play!"

by psudrozz on Aug 26, 2008 8:54 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

well then...

i knew all along that i should be blaming williams, butler, norwood, and golden for missing those passes thrown 2 feet in front of them, and 4 feet over their head. here i thought it was the quarterback’s job to throw good passes, when in reality it’s not his responsibility at all. man i was way off. its funny how those same ‘characters’ around mor(on)elli had no problems with robinson 2 years prior

Nevermind. Found it

Here’s the full quote though:

“…. I’m repeating myself but I always felt that Morelli got more criticism than he deserved and that I wasn’t going to pile it on by sticking Clark in there and saying even the coach doesn’t like him. I expect for a kid that had worked hard, had been a good quarterback but maybe didn’t have quite the cast of characters around him that he could do some things easier, so I just went that way. But Clark was our second quarterback last year.”

There’s something odd about the wording of that statement. It doesn’t quite sound like “Morelli was good but the players around him weren’t” to me, but it still just shows how weird the treatment of Morelli was.

by speedomike on Aug 27, 2008 8:23 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hmmm....

maybe by ‘characters’ he meant coaches. THAT would make some sense.

You know...

We have a little saying from Bo that we like to trot out time and again: “the team, the team, the team”… point being that NOBODY is bigger than the team. You read over Joe’s quote and he sure looks like he put the feelings and self-esteem of Morelli in front of the countless number of other guys who don your uniform and busted their tails day in and day out too…

He didn’t pull Morelli because that would be piling on? Heaven forfend you use on-the-field performance and put the guys on the field that give you the best shot to win Joe… I can completely understand being loyal to your players, but to put an individual out in front of the rest of the team is going above and beyond “loyalty”. Think about the message that sends to the rest of the team, especially the younger guys who are trying to earn a way onto the field.

Listen, I know this comes across as harsh and all, but it’s stuff like this that continually makes me think that this PSU team will come up short when it matters most… the coaching staff that is in place at Penn State is inept in areas where you cannot afford to be. Trust me, I can empathize, I had to live through with Mike DeBord (he of: rock, rock, rock fame), Andy Moeller, and the last few years of Mike Gittelson up in Ann Arbor.

Anyways, enough of that… now that Clark has been named the starter, do you guys have any guesses as to how many snaps Devlin will see per game?

Go Blue!

I don't think anyone can really argue.

I have a little theory. Penn State will almost always have enough pure talent to win 8 games. Every win more than that is 90% up to the coaches.

As for Devlin, the test will be whether he gets significant time against Oregon State.

Touche!

I love the name. But the formula…something like: 12- {T=8} = .9%C, where T = Talent and C = Coaches.

Look, it's pretty simple really

The only reason we’re still talking about Morelli’s faults is because Clark hasn’t played a down yet. By the middle of the second quarter of the Oregon State game, Clark will suck worse than any other quarterback we’ve ever had and Devlin will be the answer to all our prayers. Or vice versa, it doesn’t really matter who starts, because who ever isn’t playing is better. I mean read the comments, it’s started already.

The fact of the matter is that every football player has flaws. Morelli’s biggest draw back was that he had confidence issues. I don’t know what Clark’s biggest flaw is yet because he hasn’t really played yet. But it will reveal itself.

At the end of the day you have to coach the players you’ve got not the one you really wanted but went to Michigan instead. Some guys need to be screamed at, others need a pat on the back. Shitty coaches can’t tell the difference, and Joe Paterno is not a shitty coach. Morelli was a pat on the back kid, and that really drives a lot of Penn State fans crazy. That’s our problem, not Paterno’s. He was trying to get the best out of Morelli because that’s what he thought was best for the team.

Lazy argument

There’s been plenty of times when the new guy was better than the old guy. Kerry Collins comes to mind immediately.

by M1EK on Aug 27, 2008 12:46 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No

the lazy argument is that the back up quarterback who you’ve never seen play is better. Just because once every few years you happen to guess right doesn’t mean that you’ve done anything other than guess in making the assessment.
