Gameday tailgates, traditions & superstitions

Kickoff is only 92 hours away, and if you're a Penn State football lunatic like me, you're already getting ready for the opener this weekend.

So what do you do for Penn State games?  If you go to the games, is there anything special you do at your tailgate?  Do you do shots of Jack Daniels every time some shouts "WE ARE".  Or what about the food.  Do you serve something unique that no other tailgate has, like Rocky Mountain oysters?

What about for away games or games that you watch at home?  Do you have some lucky underwear that you wear every game? Or do you throw darts at your lucky #14 jersey every time PSU throws an interception?

Let's share some stories about the wild $hit we do on gameday.

Let's see how many posts we can start with the phrase, "This one time, when I was really drunk..."

Can someone explain the rules of the dizzy wiffleball bat game?

I’ve seen many a Youtube video of its execution in the fields.

Simple rules, really

Drink til you can’t walk straight
Spin around the bat til you can’t see straight
Fall over
Puke
Repeat as necessary

Tons of deep fried food.

Jager Bombs.

And that’s all she wrote.

hmm

- always a case of natty light present
- breakfast wine (sutter home zin)
- box of wine bladder hung on a rope
- buffalo chicken dip
- stump ( tap nails into a tree stump and flip the hammer while swinging at someone else’s nail)
- bottle of the doctor.

basically general debauchery with grilled food

For the glory

We

listen to Whitney Houston’s “I will always love you,” while sipping a glass of Jack Daniels on the rocks the Friday night before, and the Saturday morning of the game, at at the chorus say “explitive [INSERT TEAM HERE].”

It sounds odd, and way too routine, but consider that in 2005, the only time we didn’t follow this tradition was the Michigan game. Yeah – our bad.

Postgame

Since 2001, after the Ohio State game, we toast to every win with a “good stiff boubon.” The genesis for came the week before when Penn State came back to beat Northwestern in the final minute. When asked about the game, Joe Paterno offered that “This was a great football game. I’m going to go home, get into trouble with a good stiff bourbon, then watch Ohio State tapes.”

Blogging about D.C. Baseball since April '04. Penn State alum. Also partial to the Washington Capitals, New York Yankees and Yale football.

This one time, when I was really drunk

I took a nosedive into a pile of street construction. I healed up with a Wawa spicey dog and a gallon of Sunny D. Puke ensued.

This one time, when I was really drunk...

It was the season opener my sophomore year (1999) when we played Arizona. We started drinking early in the morning, and on the walk to the game, I passed out in the parking lot of the apartments near the Natatorium and the tennis courts.
My friends managed to get me up and drag me into the game, where I promptly re-passed-out in the student bleachers. When I came to, I knew I couldn’t make it through the game, so I dragged my drunk ass back to the dorms.
Once I got back to my dorm, I turned on the TV to watch the 2nd half of the game. That was when I realized that the game hadn’t even started yet.
I successfully managed to drink my face off, pass out twice and walk back home all before the opening kickoff. Good times, good times.

I bleed Blue and White.

That was a really fun game too

PSU was #1, Arizona was what, #3? Really nice, warm day. Lots of excitement about the team. Game was great.

That game might make my top ten games I atteded list, if I ever created such a list.

If we're just going to tell drunk stories..

I once was hammered at a PSU hockey house party in the fall of 2003, took a dump in their only bathroom, turned up the heat, locked the door and climbed out a window. Best walk home of my life. If any of the hockey players are on here, man, I regret nothing.

Awwwlll, man

Can’t wait to hear a hockey player step up and beat you down for this! I’m not one, btw.

Buggy, I'm (mc)Lo(v)inin this post

Sadly, if I put all I have into it, as is my wont today (like it’s been all freakin week), I’ll never get the shite done I need to before going on vacation on Friday. Besides, they actually are two replies, one for each type of gameday tradition I have. All of my PSU gamedays are family gamedays, but they’re of two varieties:
1. Gameday tailgate with family women & kids
2. Gameday tailgates with the brothers and the fellas
I’ll get back on later and put em up.

In 2002, Nebraska game...

Nothing new about the point that I got wrecked after the game downtown- but – I attempted to flag down a taxi to take me back to my buddy’s apartment, and instead flagged down a cop on College Ave, who was more than happy to give me an underage (it was sophomore year). So now after not having a ride and being too drunk to know where I was going, I somehow wandered to the lawn by the Creamery passed out. When cop #2 of my night woke me up and I already showed him that I was awarded an underage, his best solution was to cite me for public drunkeness. That was an all-timer of a great and costly evening.

Once when I was really drunk I experienced the beer bat...

The dizzy wiffle bat game is what is called The Beer Bat – here’s how it goes:

1. Fill the hollow bat up with 1 can of beer
2. Make a very small scale baseball feild with bases and feilders
3. Batter drinks entire beer from wiffle bat then spins around bat on home plate 3 times
4. Pitcher pitches empty beer can to batter – one pitch
5. Batter either strikes out or hits the ball and runs the bases not stoping until home
6. Feilders feild beer can and throw it at batter (like kickball) to get batter out

If the batter makes it to home plate with out being hit he wins…

This is a prime example of why Penn State tailgating is legendary – we come up with brilliant games that encourage binge drinking and athleticism.

That sounds really fun

Def need to try it out. What are your hollowed out bats lookin like, and made how?

Sawed off wiffle ball bats. Good luck if you were thinking of hollowing out a wooden one.

Some assclowns decided to set up their dizzy bat field next to our blue-white tailgate this year. Not the brightest of kids, as we had the deep fryer on blast. Nearly sent one moron to the ER before the realized maybe they should move.

When I was in school they sold them at McLanahan’s with the end already sawed off.

We really never got into doing them at the tailgates too much because they do get out of hand, we started the beer bat in Penn Towers at a party one night and we’d just do it in the hall way of the building.

I think that’s how it caught on too because everyone would come out of their apartments when they heard us chanting BEER BAT! BEER BAT! BEER BAT! And we’d just recruit those people to be some of the fielders. Then they’d end up doing a beer bat….

We got desperate one night after we ran out of beer too for this high school kid to just try one, we were like you’ve got to and we only had cheap vodka… Bad idea

Good memories… It is defintely fun and I do recommend it… but in a controlled atmosphere where you won’t annoy people or get burnt by stumbling drunk into a deep fryer.
