Fran Fisher, not Ganter. Is there any other football program with as many Frans as this one?

Speaking of Fran Fisher...

My college roommate’s father worked in the Athletic Department & my roommate grew up knowing him as Mr. Fisher. It was always so weird because I, like everybody else, would call him Fran Fisher.

He, meaning Fran Fisher, is going to do a bit on gopsusports every Friday. Here is the info: http://gopsusports.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/082908aac.html

On a couch, in Pittsburgh

Getting harassed by two PSU-hating roommates, who immediately shut up as I ran around the house like a fool and chugged some Jack Daniels. Bang.

I was actually by myself in my place on Nittany Ave

For some reason I left the house where we were watching to go home (don’t remember why), but none of my roommates were home and I watched the end alone. Just about jumped through the ceiling when it happened.

All I remember is...

I was an underclassmen, somewhere in State College, drunk and on top of the world.

Although I’m sure this happened numerous times, does anyone remember if this was one of the infamous times when an army of students charged to a practice field, tore a goalpost down, and took it to Joe Paterno’s house?

I was at a high school football game

My high school had our Friday night game postponed form the night before, so we had our game Saturday. Of course being in the marching band I had to be there. So I was in the stands at West Chester East High School when it happened. They announced the score over the loudspeaker though, and my dad, when the PSU game was over, came to the high school game and told me “You missed a great play.”

Luckily he taped it for me so I could watch it later that night.

Hershey Bears hockey game

Listening to it on a headset radio while I was at the game. The best part was like as soon as it happened about 10 people around me starting going nuts too and we all started yelling and hi-fiving

My friend always mentions how bad George Paterno was on that call.

I was there in Waring

I didn’t have a TV and my friend quicked me out his dorm room so he could go to church (he flunked anyway) and wound up watching in Waring Commons. I just remember the energy in downtown immediately after as people were just going nuts and running around.

Ok my turn

I actually had to work that day. I was working 12 hour shifts and rotating with a guy who grew up a Hurricane fan in Florida. All week long he was trash talking me in the lead up to the game. He worked the night shift on Friday night and I relieved him on Saturday morning at 8AM. On his way out the door he gave me one last earful and even bragged about being able to watch the game on television while I was going to be stuck at work. I managed to listen to the game on the radio while at work and went completely nuts. When he came in to relieve me at 8 PM that night he looked like his dog just died.

I was

3 years old, visiting Florida with some reletives, and both my parents. I don’t remember much except that it was a very big deal.

I now own the DVD and the last 2 minutes makes me dizzy with excitment — what a game.

Chafie is a great choice, but

Wasn’t there a little guy on the ’95 team who wore #2? I mean, he was really small, like 140 lbs but always got a lot of cheers when he ran out with the team.

Mike Archie?

That was my first thought for this pic but I couldn’t find a good pic of him. He was a Dave Megget/Eric Metcalf type guy. When people saw a screen pass going his way they stood up because he was probably going to gain 30 or 40 yards on it. I always liked him.

No, not Archie

This dude was about half that size.

When in doubt

Check the Nittany Anthology.

According to him the only two players to wear #2 in the 90’s were Archie and Fields. Both were five year seniors.

Could I have imagined it?

But Archie was only 5’8" tall. He was pretty small.

Wasn't Askari Adams really little?

although I thing he wore 18 or something, not 2.

Perhaps you’re thinking of Shawn Lee, who we affectionately referred to as, “The Giant Midget”, as he was 5’7", 175lb. Wore #24, though, and graduated in 1998.

in an airport

i was 16 in the orlando airport coming back from disneyworld. you couldn’t tear me away from the railing outside the bar. my dad and i made the family late getting on the plane. afterwards some incredibly drunk man riding the same plan kept offering my dad drinks, to which he denied saying he was diabetic and couldn’t drink, to which the man became angry and aggressive saying my father insulted him. he then proceeded to hit on my mom and tried to buy her some drinks, claiming he was “just a fellow fan trying to celebrate with other fans” when my dad confronted him.

i can faithfully say the only time i left a game early is when LJ ran for 279 some odd yards against michigan state, and they pulled him at halftime (or the beginning of the 3rd). we left because it was -1000 degrees and i couldn’t feel my heart beating anymore. hell i even stayed until the temple game was over 2 years ago, sopping wet

Sophomore year in my dorm room packed in with about 20 others…I remember whipping my hat on the floor, cursing Penn State, mumbing such nonsense as " I should have gone to Michigan, at least they can win" THEN…the pass and all hell broke loose….Someone was able to take a picture (which I still have) of all the people screaming and tossing each other around in my room…I’ve never spoken of any such desire to go to Michigan ever again, and I never will…Penn State Gods were at work that day

You should have heard me...

…after they lost to Michigan in 1999. One of the nicer things I said was that they should refuse to let any member of the 1999 team graduate. I’m pretty sure I used the term “gutless” with a bunch of explatives around it, several times. And then some.

So I see where you were coming from.

I can remember watching this at my niece’s b-day party. Of course, everyone in attendance were Pitt fans. When one lad asked his dad why he wouldn’t cheer for Penn State, since it, too, was a PA team, his arrogant dick-headed father responded, “We don’t ever cheer for the Phillies, Eagles, or Flyers, do we?” As Fields caught that pass, I turned and started to sing, “Fly! Eagles Fly!…uh..I mean We Are Penn State”.

By the way, wasn’t that the “Who’s Dan Morgan?” game?

After we gave the ball back to them, I figured they were just going to run the clock out and kill the game. Took the dogs for a walk around the block. Walked back in JUST as we stopped them on 4th down.

Was too nervous to watch our offensive series, so I was hiding behind our couch, peering over the top (think little kid + scary movie). When Thompson got the pass off right before getting slaughtered and I saw the ball floating down to Chafie, I leapt over the couch and started running in place like a drunken fool trying to will him past the Miami secondary. Mission accomplished.

This was the game that tought me to not watch PSU football with the windows open, as the amount of screaming (both good & bad) involved that day may have given my neighbors the impression that a serial killing and/or human sacrifice was taking place. Windows closed, A/C on for road games from there on out.

I was in my rental car in Miami

The Mrs. and I left the game after Miami had the ball and looked like it was going to run out the clock (no excuse). We were soaking wet (no excuse), and we wre getting a little afraid of the Miami fans, who were the closest I’ve ever seen to Pitt fans (still no excuse). Not wanting to see the post game celebration we ducked out to the car and headed to the highway. Found the game on the radio and nearly wrecked when Fields caught that pass. Spent something like $1500 on that weekend and missed the most important 5 seconds.

I tell this story every year for the young ’uns, so that they may learn from my mistakes. Never leave the game or turn off the TV. Never.

you're right.....

My father learned the very same important lesson in the 70’s. Since i’ve been alive, we have stayed for every minute of….virtually…every game.

by Stately NOVA Lion on Aug 28, 2008 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Me too

It’s very rare that I will ever walk out early. Maybe when the third string goes in for mop up duty. I almost never walk out during a loss. When Morelli threw the pick-six against Ohio State last year was the only time I can ever remember walking out of the stadium in disgust. I’m too afraid I’ll miss a big comeback. But more importantly, after paying $50 I want to get my money’s worth.

by BSD on Aug 28, 2008 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What sucks the most about paying that penance

Is that 95 times out of 100, you watch another team and its fans celebrating. Minnesota 99, Miami 01, all of 2003-2004, Michigan 06, and “Surely the clock operator is mistaken and there is still enough time left for a kickoff” in 2005.

Miami 99

Would you beleive I was out of town, fighting with my girlfriend and I missed that fu@#king play? My friend came into the room screaming, I saw the replay. Ten minutes later I was so disgusted with the whole situation I dumped her and we drove back to State College.

Drank Hurricans at Tony’s Big Easy the whole night. Strange day.

Commencing

I was there, in the Orange Bowl (sorry for those who’ve seen me post this before…). Chafie ran right towards us. We went apeshit, of course. I had been recovering from a big bender earlier in the week, of the ‘this one time, when I was really drunk variety,’ and had a wicked abrasion across the breadth of my forehead (you shoulda seen the other guy’s face). This, plus my fresher, Saturday buzz, along with the displeasing disposition that comes from feeling like we were going to lose, had me looking pretty grumpy for large parts of the fourth quarter. And also had me looking like a nice target for obnoxious Canes fans.

But, when Chafie hauled in this pic and headed our way, all those frowns turned upside down. ‘I can see clearly now the rain has gone’ popped into my head. The clouds parted. Angels sang. And I high-fived every blue-and-whiter who would return it (all of em did) all the way down the narrow OB ramps (reminded me some of the O’s old Memorial Stadium), shouting: ‘See you in New Orleans!’

Sweet ass memory I’ll keep with me all the way to the grave….
