Hokies to hold inaugural "White Out"
I offer a tentative declaration of shenanigans. It's an overt stab at one of our most recent traditions (as traditional as a few years ago can be). If it were done on a national stage heads would roll, but since it's against Furman and for reading (really? We need to raise awareness for literacy still?) I'll merely shake my fist in the direction of Blacksburg.
I can't help but think their AD Weaver (former PSU player) is hijacking our successful idea, if only for a test drive. But using the word "inaugural" makes it sound like it's going to happen again.

VT has been doing
student-section organized orange and maroon-outs for years, though they call them by other names. I have an orange T-shirt somewhere at home from the Marshall/VT game that was played on the same day in 2005 as the original PSU whiteout. And PSU isn’t exactly original in that department, either.

True
But we’re widely known for the White Out premise, more than any other school. And that’s nine-tenths the law.
I don’t care if they do orange and maroon stuff. The student sections should be all orange and maroon on gameday anyway. The coincidence that their athletic director is a former PSU player combined with our recent notoriety for White Outs is too much. It’s a blatant ripoff. And white isn’t even a team color.
Like I said, they’re doing it during a no-name game so I don’t care too much. It’s just fodder for my continuing arguments with all the Hokies I have to deal with down here in VA.

I agree...
and, as much as I hate ESPN these days, I think they’d agree with you as well. Penn State and the White Out are officially attached to one another at this point.

I just remembered
Maroon Effect and Orange Effect were the names of the stunts.

whiteouts
Any other school wishing to declare a whiteout should have to mention penn state as the leader and best of such color coordination. Also….. how is VT getting away with using the term ‘whiteout’? Shouldn’t the Phoenix “no one cares” hockey team be all over that infringment?
"Boy that student section now is up and really making a gigantic amount of noise. You see the sea of white, the white out. Well they are 2 minutes and 28 seconds away from the whiteout of the Buckeyes here tonight." - Ron Franklin

I dont think they would care
White-out could use some (more) free advertising, most likely
John Madden told me 90% of the game was half-mental...

just like...
“WE ARE” and the Whiteout….
PSU didn’t invent them. We just do it better.

Just to stoke the fire a little more
I saw a Hokie T-shirt the other day proclaiming “We are … Virginia Tech”.
Just goes to show there is no good idea like a stolen idea and VT is PSU’s little brother.

Ummm
You do realize Penn State showed a massive amount of support after the shootings at VT. There were a lot of shirts that had the Nittany Lion emblem on maroon and orange shirts saying “We Remember…” and “We Are… Virginia Tech”
So 9/10 the shirt you saw was a PSU student that happened to believe in showing support for VT during that rough time.
I still see those shirts all the time around campus.

Ummm...
Living in VA in Hokie central I am 100% sure it was a Hokie fan wearing a Hokie issued shirt.
Full disclosure: The shirt was grey and had the VT schedule below the “We are Virginia Tech”.
Now where is that “Jumping to Conclusions Mat”, I’m sure I saw it aroud here somewhere.

Never did I say you were wrong (see: “9/10”), I was merely making sure you were aware of the other shirts I was talking about.
I see them quite often on campus here.
And now that you clarified (“in VA” + “VT schedule”) I think that’s pretty messed up. Shame on them.
