Kelly -- Bum rap or totally justified?
I had this conversation with the immortal Tailgate Shogun from my site a few weeks ago. Why is it that any field goal attempt is a potential disaster? Personally, I don’t think I ever got past the snap-hold fiascoes that started the 2006 season (it was 2006, right?). He’s 58/83 for his career, or 70%.
And of course, he’s our two-point conversion specialist.

It was that
combined with all the missed field goals in the Orange Bowl the year before that would have ended the game. He’s automatic inside of 40, but get him out of that range and I think he hits less than 50%. Probably not a huge problem statistically, but they always seem to come in close games given the number of close losses the past few years they really stick out.
It just seems like the great PSU kickers of years past had a knack for hitting the big kick when they needed to make it. Kelly hasn’t shown that.

good call mike
the orange bowl fiasco was what started it for me. I honestly can’t remember if he was good or not prior to the game. During the last two seasons my friends and I roll our eyes every time he comes up to kick. I think not being able to make any FG outside of 40 yards is pretty substandard, and he really should be working on it. Its not like he doesn’t have the leg. He was bootin’ them pretty good on kickoffs last year if I remember correctly. When he leaves I would have no problems with spending a scholarship on the best field goal kicker available.

Laces Out!!
I think that 2006 kicking nightmare was more the holder’s fault than anything. Was that Jeremy Boone? I think he holds now, but I’m not sure if he did then… Anyway, Kelly won my heart with the Orange Bowl win, that alone is enough for me to ignore his other shortcomings.

he would've
won my heart too, if he didn’t already send it into cardiac arrest 3 times. his freshman year Kelly was as money as it gets, but then the OB effed with him (do i remember hearing that he had the flu or am i making that up?) and he hasn’t been as consistent since

Robbie "Highest Paid Kicker in the NFL" Gould....
caused an equal or greater number of brain anuerisms during his PSU tenure. Look at him now. Gould was also kind enough to say he was pretty much on his own at PSU trying to figure things out. How many of the those dark years losses are squarely on his shoulders?
We have too much dead wood on the coaching staff to be able to afford a dedicated Special Teams coach. And even if we could, said coach should spend 99% of his time trying to improve on our abysmal coverage team.
Why don’t we ask the Bahrs or heck even Brett Conway to fill the unofficial role of mentoring our kickers. Do we have a sports psychologist on staff to help these guys “get out of their own heads”? Once they get the shanks its pretty touch to fight your way back on your own.

Bahrs & Conway
Great suggestions. Could prolly get them to do it pro bono. Of course, pro bono would prolly be an NCAA violation…

All I Remember Is
Him scoring the TD against MSU last year. We were screwing with them like crazy. We had the kicker run for a TD, and we had Derrick Williams go all Antwaan Randle El circa Super Bowl XL, and then we realized we were actually in a football game, and completely choked. Owell…
