Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Media Day Tidbits

That's right. While you guys are out partying and having a good time on Friday night, I'm here working on this stupid blog. The things I do for you guys.

Read Between the Lions has a few updates for us on injuries and personnel moves.

A couple of notes from today’s media day session at Penn State.

-Redshirt freshman guard Josh Marks is gone from the team officially. Head coach Joe Paterno said Marks never “showed up when he was supposed to,” but added that Marks is a good kid and just has to make some decisions with his life.

-Cornerback A.J. Wallace has a slight hamstring pull, is riding a bike but is expected to be OK according to Paterno citing team doctors.

-Paterno said Navarro Bowman, Knowledge Timmons and Andrew Quarless are all practicing with the team, Timmons and Bowman are officially back, but he is still waiting for grades on Quarless.

-Offensive lineman Nerraw McCormick should be back provided he can stay in top physical condition.

There is much more over at RBTL, so go check that out. And then head over to Blog, Sweat and Tears where Donnie Collins updates us on some position changes.

Position changes:

-Redshirt freshman Andrew Dailey is listed at running back. Looks like he’s going to be the fullback, and no longer a linebacker.

-Another redshirt freshman, Chaz Powell, has moved from safety to receiver. That’s a strange move to me, because Powell has been lauded at safety and the depth at receiver seems to be better than the depth in the defensive backfield.

-Zordich is listed at fullback. From what I’m told, that isn’t expected to be permanent.

-Michael Mauti, a true freshman who enrolled early and played at safety in the Blue-White Game, is now back at linebacker.

-True freshman James Terry is listed at offensive line.

There is much more over there too so head on over.

For those of you reading this tonight, please leave a drunk comment so we can all laugh at you in the morning.

i appreciate the dedication

and i’m not even drunk tonight.

nice post though. i’ve been wondering what’s been going on inside the impenetrable vault that is psu football practice.

.

Notice how they moved 2 positions away from DB, one of our weaker positions on the depth chart… I wonder what they have going on that makes them so confident.

DBs

It may be temporary. The coaches use the first few weeks of spring practice to move guys around and see what they can do in case they need something down the road. They already know the defense if they ever need to go back, so why not give them a chance to learn a little offense too.

Mauti should be a LB

I’m not exactly sure why he played safety in the BW game. He’s got Butkus award 2010 written all over him.

Mauti @ DB

Apparently the reason for the move was to allow Mauti to spend time in coverage and improve that aspect of his game.

I was thinking the same thing as you until I read that. Makes sense to me.

Powell.......

If memory serves, he has too much speed to be playing DB. I like this move. Get him on the field where he can help us score some points.

I would have love too much speed at DB against Indiana last year…. just sayin’

by stonewall435 on Aug 9, 2008 7:34 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree

Too much speed is not a problem. But looking back, the problem in the Indiana game wasn’t speed it was size. Their WR was 6” taller and 30 pounds heavier than our CB’s. He just muscled his way to the ball. That’s why I can’t understand how King thinks he’ll make it in the NFL when ALL the WR are built like that.

Not all...

just look at the Redskins. Santana Moss and Randle El are more compact wideouts.

The 3 Mikes

I hope Zordich doesn’t stay at FB.. i don’t want him to be the next BranDon Snow converting from LB to FB… out of all the LBs we got recruiting wise of last year.. Zordich really impresses me.. Mauti has mad potential.. and lets not forget about Yancich, he can play.. ladies and gentleman.. this is the future of Linebacker U

I wouldn’t get too worked up about position switches yet. It’s just the first week. The coaches are evaluating guys at different spots.

The 3 Mikes

Are still a class behind the three stellar recruits ahead of them: Stupar, Colasanti & Dailey.

Devlin.....

Is Devlin going to get a shot or do you guys think Clark as starting QB is a done deal?

by nitannyfan on Aug 10, 2008 9:16 PM EDT reply actions

Opinion

...I do not think it is a “done deal”...but I believe DC is definately leading.

BOTH will have snap time, with Clark getting the greater % (at first). The first (4) games will be the litmus test.

(3) categories for rating performance for % of snaps outcome:
1.) IF DC could prove to pass well, hang on to the ball and make good reads, he wins the majority of the snaps. PD will still see playing time (noting he performs "ok" in the first 4 games) and takes the field to further the "mystery" of this new spread/HD playcalling.
2.) BOTH play near = on the field in the first (4) games, if the spread/HD system is adapted well by all on the "O", THEY BOTH share near = time...keeping the defenses guessing. 3.) PD actually runs the show well on all QB aspects BUT demonstrates he able to stretch the field better. If this were to happen, i think the predictability of the "O" might be a bit more obvious (figuring DC is the better run option); however, if the D has problems stopping us...there is not much of an issue. Even though I listed this as "3rd"...it could prove to be the ticket!

The gray box of death

I’m not sure what causes that, but I’m going to report it to the SBN IT guys and see if I can get an answer. Did you do anything in particular to that line like cut and paste something or try to change the font?

Nope

...I did use the spacebar to have an itemized list of (3) points line-up on top of eachother though. Other than that “nuthin crazy.”

can someone...

fill me in on exactly what happened with Josh Marks? I hadn’t heard that he was having problems, but it sounds like this wasn’t really a suprise…

by erieisforlovers on Aug 10, 2008 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

The word I get

I actually spoke with a player who said Josh had failed a conditioning test a few weeks before preseason camp started and was told he would be held out of practice in the beginning. But when camp started he never showed up.

by BSD on Aug 11, 2008 9:10 AM EDT up reply actions

ah ok thanks Mike...

that sucks, we could use the depth on the O-line, and he was a big boy… Those conditioning tests are tough… i remember running mine before camp started freshman year for me (div 2)... it was 15 110 yrd sprints back to back, and depending on position, you had a certain amount of time to finish each one. I wonder if theirs are similar…
