It's official. Evans and Koroma will not play this week. Probably more disturbing is that they aren't even in practice right now.

Back by Illinois

That’s what every insider thing I read says. I agree though-I don’t like that they aren’t practicing.

by speedomike on Sep 10, 2008 1:16 PM EDT reply actions

Wouldn't be surprised.

Leaving them out until Illinois accomplishes all sorts of things, from sending a message to the team to forcing the media to acknowledge that the guys were suspended for three weeks. And none of it will make a lick of difference on the field against Syracuse and Temple.

Someone else already brought this up but...

Will this incident and the suspension bring Evans back next year? I hope so.

by millzners on Sep 10, 2008 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Evans

I have to think this is dropping his draft stock like a rock. I would say there is a 90% chance he comes back now unless he finishes the year with 20 sacks in only nine games or something.

by BSD on Sep 10, 2008 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, have to

completely agree on that one.

Next year 2009 roster: rebuild 1/2 of the o-line probably; but return (2) QB’s, all TB’s, the SR WR trio will be a bit of a tough one to replenish, their leadership too. Though we have a few young and TALL guys who seem like they can do quite well (TE’s too).

Defense: Mo back, General Lee back, younger LB’s should have lot of game under their belts too. Secondary 1/2 re-built? Tough to say at this point if our “D” next year will be in the same shape or better?

You’re thoughts?

" We need MORE cowbell !"

by BlueWhiteLife on Sep 10, 2008 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm with you...

The offensive line should be able to rebuild… won’t be this year’s dominating line, but it’ll get the job done. Brackett, Moye, Zug, and Powell will need to work hard, but I’m hoping they’ll be good enough next year to complement our excellent running attack.

Defensive line and linebackers should both be absolutely killer next year. Just need to almost completely rebuild the secondary (only A.J. and Drew returning) and we’ll be all set to kick ass.

by BSM PSU 93 on Sep 10, 2008 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

this not only hurts his ‘character’ score, but no one wants another Ricky Williams, even if connecting the two is an extreme stretch.

Missing three games, which is what I think we are all expecting, is also going to have a big impact on his stats and possibly eliminate him from post-season awards.

by KevinHD on Sep 10, 2008 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

If that's true

Then this may be the best thing that ever happened to our defense. Bringing back Lee and Evans next season plus having developed our younger talent to play at that level may give us a monster defense next season…

by millzners on Sep 10, 2008 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it's a good move by JoePa

We should beat Syracuse without them but it will definitely get their attention because they’ll now be sitting for the 2 biggest OOC games. As humans we usually learn by our mistakes when we’re punished for them. These guys made a mistake, they’re being punished, now hopefully they’ll learn.

Latest Report?

Have there been any recent reports on this? Any more details on why Wallace (who was there at least when the search occurred) was not suspended and why Quar-once again in the middle of controversy-less was allowed to dress? And why Evans, who wasn’t there at all (?) has been suspended and continues to be without a single charge being filed yet. Obviously someone knows something or we’d play the same innocent until proven guilty card we played with Wally Richardson back when he allegedly punched a cop or something () and JoePa stood by him. Or at least we should.

I understand we need to make statements to players (and unfortunately save face with the media) in the wake of such bad press lately but it’s not like they were caught smoking and watching The Wizard of Oz with Pink Floyd playing on those speakers they hauled off. In some instances – innocent until proven guilty does hold up – some people are innocent, and should be treated that way until proven guilty. Suspend them for one game for being remotely involved is fine, but to keep them out for more with no charges is presuming guilt and I feel is unfair.

Anybody have more thoughts on this, I’m conflicted on the issue and have little info as I’m down here in SEC country – yuk!

I think the question is

How many games do you suspend them for assuming they did it? Caught with pot, is probably worse than underage drinking, but not as bad as DUI, right? Neither of those being season long suspensions. I figure if they miss four games, and face criminal charges, and sanctions from the university, and have their NFL draft stock plummet, that they have probably been punished sufficiently.

I think...

if they did it, i.e. if a drug test comes back positive, they’re thrown off the team. In an ideal world, smoking weed wouldn’t be looked at as harshly as DUI, but I think they’re probably comparable.

I think it’s somewhat just for them to still be sitting because they hosted the party and we don’t know all of the info. Maybe Evans had nothing to do with it himself, but it was his best friends who came over and brought all the dope…who knows? Just wait, see, and hope they’re back for the big ten schedule.

Smoking Weed vs. DUI

Are not even remotely comperable in terms of moral responsibility. You could make an argument that DUI is closer to attempted murder than underage drinking. Did Tony Johnson even get suspended at all for that?

Paterno’s not one to let the political climate dictate punishment. Guilty or not these guys will be back. For gods sake Quarless dresed last week. Also, I put up a fan post that the suspend players started practicing today.

Pot vs. Underage drinking

I would argue smoking pot is worse than underage drinking. At least one of those activities is legal as an adult. Quarless got two games for his first underage drinking incident. He sat out a few practices in the spring for DUI. I’m thinking Evans and Koroma are looking at at least three games here.

by BSD on Sep 10, 2008 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he was comparing pot to DUI

DUI is also illegal as an adult, and puts other beside yourself in danger.

Coincidence? Our guys were doing their journalistic duty..article research!

This article on MSN Money showed up today and discusses the very topic of legalizing – well drugs – one reason for the sake of boosting the economy. Thought it was at least appropriate to this part of the discussion. If you have a second give it a read. nothing to do with PSU or our team but it’s funny and scary at the same time.

by MSippiNit on Sep 10, 2008 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Personally,

I think smoking weed is less dangerous to one’s self and society as a whole than drinking period (not to even mention DUI). But, unfortunately, society at large does not. I hope that there’s some mercy here, but I think plenty of the fan base would be happy if Joe kicked these guys off the team if they were smoking.

I’ll read the fan post. I hope your right. My own guess is that no one who’s still on the team was actually smoking. They might have hosted the party and been there, but I’m hoping (and guessing) they didn’t actually toke.

I think you mean Rashard Casey

Blogging about D.C. Baseball since April '04. Penn State alum. Also partial to the Washington Capitals, New York Yankees and Yale football.

Correction, Thanks.

Rashard Casey… that’s right, thanks for the clarification. Not sure anyone followed that after he graduated but it turns out not only was he exhonerated by a Grand Jury, but he won a suit against the police department. You can see an article here. Wish we had more details on our current issue. I’d hate to be punishing kids that are innocent just to prove a needed point due to past knuckleheads.

BTW – I live in a SEC University town and it suprises me how many issues like this get swept under the rug by the police or others involved in the situations (lived here a while, know a lot of local PD/Security). Im not saying Penn State or State College should begin doing this. BUT MAYBE – people should applaud the city and Univeristy for not ignoring the issues for the sake of the program – issues that are common on every major campus in America. Instead they do something about it. Just a thought Mr.Smith will never write about.

Quote from that article...

"Penn State coach Joe Paterno was criticized for keeping Casey on the team at the start of the 2000 season while the charges against him were pending. The Nittany Lions struggled to a 5-7 record, though Casey ended the season by throwing for three touchdowns and running for two more in a 42-23 win over Michigan State in his final collegiate game. "

I obviously hope they’re innocent, but even if they are, they still need a message to think a bit before they act.

Even if they weren’t smoking some blunts, someone in their apartment was. Maybe the decision point for them is, “Hey, I’m a future NFL player. Perhaps I should tell this dude not to fire up in my apartment and blast some Lil Wayne on a Tuesday night. Maybe I shouldn’t have a random dude living here who doesn’t belong, too!”

Players are pacticing

According this this article the players are practicing:
http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/65892

According to a team source, though, the two did return to practice yesterday.

Do you really send a message if the punishment is transparently convenient ?

fair point

but I think that the players are still affected by sitting for practices and games. Evans has to know his stats and draft status are dropping as a result of this nonsense. Guys this competitive get annoyed by not being able to compete, having to practice on the second team, etc.

by spakajewia on Sep 10, 2008 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Equal treatment

These two guys are starting to look guilty. The Office of Judicial affairs has dealt with Pot use a million times. It is listed as a minor offense for first time and may require some classes. It is also listed in the athletics code of conduct and first offense has simular outcome. Then there is paterno punishment for team rules. My guess 2-3 games. As far as police action they will likely be charged with posession of pot. They messed up and they are paying big time. In reputation and dollars and cents. If you look at this overall incedent, My guess is these two are typical college kids and are deer in headlights at this point. They will learn and grow up.

by TAinPA on Sep 11, 2008 8:25 AM EDT reply actions

Enough is enough.....

I don’t think the punishment should fit the crime on this one, it should be more harsh. With the extensive legal troubles that players have had over the past few years and all of the bad publicity that the school has gotten, you have to eventually draw the line in the sand. They have all been warned and warned and warned, but they still think they are invincible.

One of the things I have always been most proud of about being a Penn Stater is that the school and the program has been known for its integrity and honor. When did we suddenly become the University of Miami. These players have put a huge black mark on the end of a hall of fame career for Joe. I don’t care how good they are, enough is enough, and I say any infractions should be punished harder than they normally would. Either that, or stop playing that video before the games that talks about Success with Honor, and change it to “Arrest, your honor?!”

Sorry for the vent but tired of the crap.
