Parking in State College
Apparently the Boro just passed some BS about raising rates for those of you who use the downtown garages for game weekends. I know this is going to hurt my business but what am I to do?
Here is the release to businesses just sent a little bit ago.
NEWS FROM THE DOWNTOWN STATE COLLEGE IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT (DSCID)

Members of the DSCID Parking Study Committee and Jody Alessandrine, DSCID Executive Director, met w/ Art Caccavale & Karen Martin from State College Borough Parking Division Friday morning.
The Borough of State College agreed to compromise with the DSCID Parking Study Committee on the proposed new garage parking for special event weekends only. In July 2007, Borough Council passed an ordinance allowing the administration to institute new parking rates for transient or rental parking in any garage or non-metered lot for a (trial) period of up to 6 months. Here are the details of the new rate structure for downtown parking garages only:
AGREED UPON: Starts Temple Football Weekend, all home football game weekends; from 7AM Sat. to 5PM Sun.; $1.00 per hour the entire time—i.e. $24.00/24-hr. period max.
ORIGINAL BOROUGH PROPOSAL: Starts Temple Weekend, all home games; from 3PM Fri. to 5PM Sun; $2.00 per hour first 5 hours, $1.00 ea. hr. thereafter with a $29.00/24-hr. period max.
The Borough also agreed to supply business owners with MVP purchase opportunities for their employees since if purchased in advance, they pay the normal .75 cent hourly rate; and, to sit down with the DSCID after the football season to review actual revenue compared to the projected overall revenue increase.
(The other special event weekends the borough anticipates implementing increased garage parking rates are Blue/White and Arts Festival).
At 12 Noon on Friday, the administration briefed the State College Borough council at their workshop of the new agreed-upon garage rates for special event weekends. Everyone seems content with this compromise. The DSCID will keep its membership abreast of all developments.

That's bullshit
If for no other reason than you should be able to park overnight in the parking garage cheep so you can take a cab home from the bars.

Considering the cost of getting your car towed, $24 is a pretty good bagain.
While this represents a huge change in State College, people driving in from other cities might not even notice. $24 might get you three hours in downtown Philly, if you’re lucky.

My take
A. We are not Philly or Pittsburgh or Baltimore, we are State College. A cow town with a college.
B. They (the locals) hate the college but take advantage of everything they can trying to take money from both the students and the visitors to the college.

id rather
pay 24 a day than have to deal with Walk’s towing, what a bunch of nancies they are. seriously 18 bucks and 24 isnt too shabby, esp when most of the lots are within reasonable walking distance to most anywhere you want to go. plus i think they’ll see that most people will find other places to park (i know i have), and it wont be as profitable as they originally thought. Also, not many park there for 24 straight hours, and if you’re staying in SC you’ve got a hotel lot for free, so 24 is the max charge of an ideal situation
For the glory
i wish you could edit
18 being the original price for 24 hours, 24 being the new price

On campus parking
On the weekends many of penn state’s faculty lots are open. Most have no restriction for 5pm( or some 9pm) Friday to 7 am Monday. I’d suggest heading behind the bus station where there are a decent amount of these spots, Or the IST lot is pretty huge and opens up at 5pm.
Just an idea for those who are really cheap. (like me)

Any other secrets?
I used to park in the parking garage by the HUb on Sundays for free and spend the day downtown. Are College Ave & Beaver Ave all meterd parking?
college and beaver
Yes, I think they are both metered. (Don’t quote me though). I would assume that they would be free on the weekends? Is that right? Personally, I don’t care for having to parallel park when cars are flying up behind you. I’ll crack like morelli under pressure trying to parallel park on college ave.

Agree
I’d rather find a faculty lot on campus rather than get Munsoned on college ave.

Free parking!
The borough lifts its “parking ban” in certain “zones” on football weekends. Although it is super far away from the stadium, one can park for free on N Sparks, N Gill, and N Barnard between Beaver and West Campus. If you find yourself on N Sparks, stop by and give me a beer/cocktail for this excellent suggestion. Additionally, if those streets are full, there is Grad student parking at the end of North Sparks that is unenforced on the weekends.
May no act of ours bring shame
n sparks
Hey, i live on n sparks. Don’t be telling people about that end lot. haha. there is only about what, 15 spaces there? I’ve been parking my car over there on the weekends so I have it close by.
but really, nice tip on the borough lifting the parking restrictions on football weekends. I had no idea. Those signs are so confusing to begin with anyway.
