Questions for the Group

Beavers_medium

I think a few of you got to see the game last night. In case you went to bed early and slept late and walked past your television and newspaper and logged into BSD first thing this morning (I know you all do this), Oregon State shocked the college football world last night by knocking off USC 27-21. The big question now is, what does this mean? So here are some questions for the group to discuss.

Who will be the new #1?

What does this mean for Penn State?

What does Penn State need to happen going forward?

My thoughts....

1) Georgia…if they beat Alabama. Else, Oklahoma…the voters love them some Oklahoma.

2) It means we beat a 2-2 team. If OSU continues to win, it will be a quality win. Or, it could be the equivalent of beating Stanford last year. Only time will tell. But, considering how OSU pretty much dominated the LOS last night (at least from what I saw in the first half), I have to feel pretty good about PSU’s chances this year.

3) I’m going to state the obvious…keep winning. Also, keep things in perspective. Joe does a pretty good job of talking his kids down and deflating their heads, but I think it’s up to the leaders on this team to focus the players on the next game, the next task at hand. Hopefully the players don’t look too much into this game and overlook the Illini.

great for us, but ...

Great Oregon State win for us, but yes, we must continue to do our part. What this does confirm is that none of the pre-season BS suggesting that no one could compete with Ohio State in the Big 10 or that the Big 10 can’t compete with the Pac-10 was more than just that, BS. This horse race is wide open, and PSU has the talent and the coaching to get the job done if they keep their heads in it.

My 2 cents..

1. Georgia if they win this week…I think if they and Florida can stay undefeated going into the “Cocktail” party the winner of that will be the clear cut number 1. Oklahoma will self destruct at some point they always do.

2. It means PSU beat a team that showed it CAN be a quality team…if they continue to get better and string together a 9 win season we have a “decent” out of conference schedule…

3. Bottom line, like everyone will say PSU needs to win out to get a shot at the NC game. No one loss Big Ten team will get a shot.. I also think the offense needs to keep impressing so the pundits will buy into the idea of a decent PSU team…the thing I like is that PSU will be an underdog no matter what if they make the NC game…A one loss SEC team will be favored,a one loss Big 12 team will be favored…there won’t be an ACC, or Pac 10 rep…So it will come from either the big 10 or big 12…win out and it is PSU’s championship to lose…

also...

I think the win more than anything shuts up the Ohio State folks about us being overrated based upon our out of conference games. Coastal Carolina and Youngstown are both 1-AAs (granted Youngstown is a traditional power in 1-AA while CC is a chump school) they negate. Temple and Ohio are both on the same level I wouldn’t be suprised if Temple would beat them. Syracuse and Oregon State combined does not make up a road game to USC, BUT the win last night makes that Oregon State blowout seem a little bit better…
Also as I have said before Penn State has played 14 complete great quarters out of 16 possible… I am not sure many other teams in the Big Ten can say that…certainly not OSU…they can take their 8 best and put it up against PSUs 8 worst and PSU shines easily.

Good Topics...

Here’s a quick shot:

New #1 – depends on the games this weekend; conference play opens up ya know. If you want to call them “upsets” @ the top (I the polls are not soild and every year/every week the shuffle continues…) GA/Ala is the one most are looking at…
I want Alabama to win, if they do and Okl wins….I think Okl #1, Alab #2.

Means for PSU – that win opens up the BCS/NC door a bit. IF PSU can win-out and there are a few SEC teams with 1/or2 losses AND the pollsters STILL feel the Big10 is upgraded (in their minds) to “decent”; then I don’t think PSU will be passed-on for the NC game.

PSU needs to win out! Beat the lesser Big10 teams by the spreads – or better; play mistake free (I always have to state that). I doubt this 3rd point will happen BUT – have ONE PLAYER just have an AMAZING YEAR – heads above the rest of the country (you could say Heisman-Like) and that will help seat PSU in the BCS/NC chair. A-la 1994, we had (3) Heisman canidates…but esentially, being from the same team, they “stole” votes from eachother. The reason (I feel) the comparison will be comparable in 2008, the HD-offense spreads it out to many…and that is also WHY IT WORKS! “Many stars” each week…and it can differ next week!

Same goes for the defense…2 different guys shine each week…while the “UNIT” remains soild!

We have to win out that is all that matters now

If we don’t win out then this win means nothing to us. If we win out I think we a big shot at the NC. We do have 2 hard away games Wisc and OSU both at night so lets how we are ready. We have a lot of primetime games this year so lets not get ahead of ourselves.

Here is a question but it has a lot of ifs: What happens if we win out, and if we get to go to the NC. What does this do to the program? What does this do to Joepa’s Future? Just some thoughts.

Pete Carroll

One thing that struck me driving in to work this morning, how overrated is Pete Carroll? The man is a fantastic recruiter. I can’t deny him that. But year after year his teams fail to live up to expectations. They don’t look motivated and they fail to show up for big games (Texas ‘05) and the little games (Stanford ’07, OSU ’08). I’m starting to see why he’s such a great college coach that couldn’t make it in the pros.

He has the personality to recruit enough talent to win ten games a year, but when the lights come on and it’s time to play he’s no better than any other coach. I’m sure we’ll see a YouTube come out where Petey plays a prank on his team like he does every year. I wonder how much time he spends preparing for those when he should be preparing for his next opponent.

by BSD on Sep 26, 2008 10:42 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

he seems like a better friend than a coach,

which is to say, he seems like a nice guy, good recruiter, not going to make you kill yourself and not enjoy all the extracurricular benefits of being on the most important football team in LA, but he lacks the discipline to make his teams show up to play every week. On the other hand, USC does have the disadvantage of being close to the biggest game for every team they play; as OSU proved last night, beating them can make your season.

I wouldn't trust old rooster me neither.

by spakajewia on Sep 26, 2008 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sometimes I think...

Carroll has too much talent at USC; so much that he can’t get them to play as a team. Contrary to the popular sports cliches, you don’t want 11 guys making plays, you want 8 guys doing their jobs and 3 guys making plays. But USC can’t do that. On each side of the ball they have 5 or 6 guys who are NFL material and another 5 or 6 who think they should be, and when things get tough, every one of them tries to be the hero.

For example, last night, against a 5’6’’ running back, the D line should have been sacrificing their bodies to make a pile and trusting that their linebackers would make a play. Instead, when the ball was snapped, they were standing straight up and looking around for the ball carrier. Do that and you’ll get blown off the ball, which is exactly what happened.

It didn’t show against Ohio St, because they are pretty much the same team: a bunch of talented guys who play like 11 heros instead of a team. Do that against a disciplined team and you’ll lose most of the time.

Let’s hope we don’t fall into the same trap.

I think he’s the perfect coach for USC though…that sort of personality just fits well there. Not to mention, it’s LA- the outcome means less than who’s there.

John Madden told me 90% of the game was half-mental...

He Is Over Rated

OnePete is the most overrated coach in the NCAA. He is actually a terrible coach. Its why he never made it in the NFL. He is horrid at game management and clock management.

Whenever a game is on the line, expect USC to lose it. Oregon State beat them two years ago as well.

Whenever you see games where USC is just crushing someone, its not because of OnePete. Its simply because USC by far has more talent. It wasn’t OnePete’s coaching for why Reggie Bush made all those ridiculous moves. OnePete didn’t teach guys how to make huge one handed catches in the endzone. When USC wins, its because their talent made plays.

Did anyone see him last night on the sidelines? He looked like a deer caught in a cars headlights. He had no idea what to do. He was lost and looking for answers.

What OnePete does well is get his teams fired up for the big games. Its why they crushed Ohio State. Its also why he losses to teams like Oregon State. His teams go out flat and fall behind. Then Oregon State plays well above their heads and eeks out a victory. Its hard because USC has been so good every other team circles that game as a huge game and USC only has a couple games a year that are the huge games for them.

You can pretty much bank on it. I said it last year as well. Expect USC to lose two PAC 10 games. The PAC10 teams now his teams and his plays and can gameplan for it.

Eye on the prize

and the prize this week is the Illini. We need to stay focused on what matters…this weeks game. We can’t afford to look ahead like USC did. We need to take it one step at a time.

We are a good team with the ability to become great. I would love to see JoePa get another undefeated season. We just need to stay on the same path of destruction we are on now.

with that said….if they both win, Georgia should jump Oklahoma

USC is a bunch of thugs. Did anyone else notice all of the after the play flags that were thrown?

Pete Carroll promises these kids he will get them to the NFL, and he does a pretty good job. They are a Professional college football team, the only show in town. They look like world beaters, but ever year they fall to a lesser team.

Let's see...

- Went to bed at 9:30 last night (girlfriend gets up at 5 for work, so goes to bed early, and I’m trying to earn brownie points so she doesn’t get pissed at all the PSU games I’m planning to go to, but haven’t told her about yet….just finally mentioned the Purdue game last night, and I’ve had tickets for that for 3 weeks now. Have to figure out the best time to break all the other games (haven’t bought tix yet, since my original source dried up on me, but been planning on going to every away game, as well as the Michigan & MSU games…if anyone has any tickets at reasonable prices, let me know :-) )

-Woke up this morning at 9 am (just because she gets up at 5 doesn’t mean I have to) and played with my puppy Nittany for a while. Didn’t turn on the TV, look at the paper, or go on the internet.

-Went to work, and logged on BSD first thing (yes, I DO do that).

-Wiped HUGE grin off my face so my lab-mates don’t think I’m slacking off.

As for PSU “looking ahead”, I don’t think there’s a single “big” game this year that PSU will look ahead of.
Illinois we need revenge.
@Purdue could be a trap
@Wisconsin is the biggest game of the year for us (at least as it looks so far).
Michigan – I don’t think our players could possibly look past that game. Need revenge X10
@OSU – if anyone looks past that game they’re an idiot
@Iowa – another possible trap. Perhaps if we start our second string the game might be close
Indiana – perhaps if we start our third string the game might be close
MSU – c’mon, it is our “rivalry” game, how could we ever look past it ;-) in all seriousness, though, they beat us last year, and look good so far this year. It could be JoePa’s last year at Beaver Stadium, and it is senior day. Could be the day we clinch the big 10, and could be the day we make our statement for the NC. Of course that’s a lot of potential stress and letdown factor, but it is in Beaver Stadium, and I think that the crowd and emotion would have to carry us to a win there. Just don’t remind me that our D will have to stop Ringer.

Counter Argument

Glad the Beavs won, but it makes Ohio State’s loss to USC seem worse. IF we lose to Ohio State, it would just make it a bigger loss.

by dontcallmescooter on Sep 26, 2008 11:33 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Counter-counter argument

If we lose to OSU, then it doesn’t matter if it is a loss or a “bigger” loss, since we’d have no hope for the NC anyway, and the only thing we’d have to fight for are Big 10 standings, which don’t take rankings into account, just record. You could say, I suppose, that if we just barely beat OSU, then it won’t help our ranking as much, but I think OSU getting blown out by any team already makes them look “bad”.

Defense

I guess what strikes me the most is how well our defense did against Rogers, and yet, he looked like Barry Sanders last night.

by Spats on Sep 26, 2008 11:44 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

A long long way to go....

1) Georgia if they beat Bama, otherwise Oklahoma will be the new #1

2) It means that maybe PSU’s sched isn’t as bad as most how-the-hell-did-I-get-a-job-as-a-college-football-analyst types would like to believe. PSU, AT HOME, demolished the team that beat one of the favorites to win the BCS. Oregon St obviously was more pumped for the USC game. They also had a few weeks since their cross country ass whooping to regroup and gain some more experience as a team.

3) First off, this means PSU has a better shot of 12-0 & left out of the BCS Title game. If Oklahoma & one of Georgia, Florida, LSU, possibly Bama go undefeated, I just can’t see the voters putting us in over 2 teams from conferences they deem superior, who both would’ve won their Conference Championship games, while PSU is idle since before Turkey Day.

But we have along way to go yet with 8 conference games, which are always tougher than NC matchups that lack a sense of rivalry, as demonstrated last night.

by NittanyNutz2 on Sep 26, 2008 11:50 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Indeed

If there are undefeated teams in the SEC & Big 12, then the only way PSU would have a shot at the NC is if we win all our Big 10 games by 35+ points.

Heck, I think even if there is a 1 loss team in the SEC, coming against another “top 5” team, and they win the SEC championship, I could even see them getting bumped ahead of an undefeated Big 10 team.

Of course, if that undefeated Big 10 team is Penn State, and we wind up having another undefeated season with no National Championship, I wouldn’t be surprised to see JoePa fight even harder for a playoff, and perhaps the Big 10 will finally change their opinion and put their support behind a playoff system with the SEC and whatever the other conference was (Big 12?). I mean look at the recent history of college football. PSU gets snubbed in 1994, helping lead to a change in the system and implementation of the BCS. PSU gets screwed over in 2 games in 2002 by bad calls, leading to losses, which leads to instant replay in the Big 10 the following year, followed a year later by the rest of college football.

Heck, I would love to see PSU actually finish either #1 or #2 in the rankings, ahead of 2 other undefeated teams, and perhaps a really good 1 loss team, and announce that they’re boycotting the NC game and hosting a 4-team playoff series, and inviting the other top 3 teams to join. Of course it would never happen, but even if JoePa suggests how he would love to do that, except that they’re bound by contracts or whatnot, then it would get so much media exposure that it would probably help the cause. Of course, suggesting a playoff wouldn’t have quite as much power behind it if you are the #3 team (though being undefeated WOULD help), since then it looks like you are trying to change the system for YOUR advantage, opposed to if you are #1/#2 in which case it is against their best individual interests, and will be clearly seen as an effort to improve the college football landscape as a whole.

by The JuggerNitt on Sep 26, 2008 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not so sure

I think Penn State is an absolute exception in that if they do go undefeated they could get the Paterno vote. For starters, all of the coaches votes are public now (they weren’t in ’94) so you have to think they are going to get all of the Big Ten votes and probably ND. The rest of the conferences will vote on party lines, and so that could hurt PSU, but I think the AP Harris would tend to lean toward the story, that Paterno should get one last shot. This is the exact opposite thing that would happen if it was three one loss teams: Big Ten, Big XII and SEC.

I love the concept of Paterno telling the BCS to F-Off. That would be the greatest move in sports history.

by Kevin HD on Sep 26, 2008 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Im also not sure

Would Paterno get a mercy vote? I don’t think he would. He hasn’t before. He’s been snubbed more than anyone, our players have been too.

Polls

The coaches vote is not public as far as I’ve heard. I’m not sure about the Harris. The AP poll is, but that’s not used in the BCS calculations.

The final coaches poll of the year is released to the public.

I found links

to all 3 toward the end of last year. I’ll see if i can dig them up. The Harris definitely is and I’ll post the link to it when I rediscover it. Its my favorite poll to study because its full of (literally) crackhead voters. Although Jerry Sandusky is a contributor, at least he was as of last season.

PSU will not get jumped...

by a one loss team if they are undefeated…the whole idea of Joe riding off into the sunset with one last shot at a national championship will have the BCS folks and major network tv creaming their panities wanting a piece of the action…Think of th story lines! No way do the folks with power allow it to happen…

Nothing is implied by this in any direction

But why is the current BCS/computer ranking in place if we’re speculating that humans still hold the big key? Wasn’t the point of the BCS computer to eliminate the human factor of setting up matchups they want vs. the ones there should be?

NC talk already?

I can’t believe everyone is talking about a possible NC for Penn State in September…SEPTEMBER! Yes, I’m as fired up about this team as anybody, but let’s get a grip and take it one game at a time. Enjoy the games as they come. If you put too much pressure on any one game, it just takes away from the fun.

BTW, I am a loser who went to bed at 9:30 last night, too, but only because my satellite dish was whacked out due to rain and I couldn’t watch the game. Got up at 6:00, into work at 7:00 and BSD was the first place I checked. It totally made my day!

Agree 100%...let's cross the NCG bridge when we come to it

USC loses 1 game and suddenly everyone is talking PSU for the NCG. We still have 2 months of football left. Let’s take this thing 1 game at a time. Let’s focus on the here and now. Let’s worry about beating Illinois before we even think about anything else.
If we are looking ahead to the NCG, we will end up just like USC ended up last night.

But for now…LET’S GO STATE! BEAT ILLINI!

Doesn’t mean anything if we don’t do our business. There is so much chaos in college football anyway, so I don’t think it hurts USC as much as everyone thinks. One game at a time for us…and everything else will work itself out
