USC upset....
i was thinking abour writing a fan post about this but meh.
Is it just me or was the USC upset perfectly timed or what? We get this huge boost in our OOC the same week we are opening Big10 play against a ranked team in a primetime kickoff game. The stadium is going to be nuts and on national television. Add to that the upset was on Thursday so it gave the media lots of time toot our horns to the whole world. Every article that is talking about how the USC loss is giving National Championship hope to teams around the nation is mentioning PSU. This will go a long way for our poll stock. Also for all those worried about the team being focused for the Illinois game, i’m firmly with RUTS on this topic. Sure it’s a concern and could potentially be trouble, but this is going to be a prime time White Out (when did it become White House) game against a team we lost to last year. Add on top of that all that stuff at the basketball game (was Jordan Norwood on the BBall team then?) and the players will have no problem being up for this game.
my 2 cents.
Well yeah
It’s also perfect timing for us to get too full of ourselves and fall flat against a good opponent. Not that I think we will, but you get my point- don’t get too caught up in what’s going on around, worry about that when we’re 12-0 and looking to make the BCS title. This Kool-aid is delicious.
John Madden told me 90% of the game was half-mental...

I'm not even thinking 12-0
I came into the season thinking 11-1 would great and i still stick by that. Our team looks good but i agree with you we are no where near the point where we start talking NC. I was saying more along the lines of just good positioning for a top 5 finish. This is the first time in a long while where we’re being mentioned with the front runners in week 5.
Plat-
as mentioned before, White Outs are student section only, and a White House is absolutlely everyone. If you’re going, get your butt in white! (Bought me a Clark #17 jersey yesterday!).
Should look magnificent under the lights on ABC, and the place should be rocking considering Thursday night’s events.
Also – rumors are flying regarding the Marshmallow White Rain alluded to on PSiriUS’ previous Fan Post. Might look pretty wild.

I'm stealing computer time
at the Sleep Inn lobby across Atherton from Motel 6 where we stay (thief!), but was wondering if anyone else at the Pep Rally last night noticed Joe seemed much more sentimental than ever before. He spoke about his history at PSU, with stories about Rip, relocating Beaver Stadium, early teams…..I dunno. Also, he’s previously always thrown his Pep T-shirt into the crowd along with the players, pep squad, cheerleaders, etc., but last night…..said he was keeping this one for the rest of his life. He just seemed (to us, anyway) like he knew this was his swan song.
Am I delusional, or did anyone else that was there get this vibe? I’ve never heard him state outright, especially this early in the season, that he thinks it’s PSU’s year to win the MNC.
Ah – maybe I’m just nuts. But……

I
caught on to that too, he seemed to be saying, this is it guys, this is my last shot. It kind of scared me.
Did you hear what Corso said...
On Gameday down in Athens
“Penn State will destory the Illini and jump to #7 in the polls tonight!”
Looks like the Kool-Aid is blue this morning for Corso.

2. Nobody is afraid of Illinois.

This kind of bugs me
We felt the same way last year for the Big Ten opener. People were saying we looked like the most impressive team in the conference. Our opponent had struggled in their first few games. Everyone said we should win easily.
Then we lost to Michigan 14-9.
Mike
Black Shoe Diaries
BIG 10
I am impressed by the overall quality of most of the team this year. IU/Purdue/MSU are all decent and can put points on the board in bunches.
Anyone see the UNC/Miami game…wow.
It
is because every team in the SEC is awesome, old miss would win the NFC east but will finish 5th in sec
Yeah
Thought it was funny on Gameday when they talked about the PSU-Illinois game the Georgia fans started chanting S-E-C…S-E-C…
They seriously need to get over themselves.

Florida........
has looked terrible. Horrible tackling, turning the ball over left and right.
If I am a Clemson fan……….how have I not finally jumped off a ledge. Talk about letting your fans down year after year.
Eric Watters Atlanta, Ga.
But dang
The female Florida fans that wear bikinis in the front row sure don’t look terrible.

Remember........
If Florida loses this game, UF and SEC fans will talk about how good a football team Ole Miss is…….but Northwestern at this poing would never get the same consideration from those same folks. That always cracks me up.

Dammit. He sponsored a camp for children with various diseases that I used to attend as a wee lad. Some of the best memories I have growing up. R.I.P.
I’m so excited for us to dominate Illinois in either the first or second half. I still don’t believe we can do it in both. But we will have the victory, closer than some might think.

Tell me about it
Michigan is getting so many breaks in this game. But their offense is too pathetic to do anything about it.
Mike
Black Shoe Diaries
This is why I figured
Wisconsin would end up in the 30s + for the game. The Michigan D might be ok but their offense is their worst enemy
No they certainly aren't
Stop Hill=Stop Wisconsin
Did you notice?
they were using Penn State as the team explaining the spread. Who would of saw that coming?
I didn't realize he was white until I watched a game
Sweet tats or not, he’s not gonna work out
Yo my nittany peeps......
I am screwed for tonights game. I complained out loud that it was going to affect my watching the penn state game when I realized I had to go to a family 50th anniversary party tonight, so now I can’t use the “i’m sick” excuse.
So here is my dilema…
Should I TEVO it, declare a blackout all scores and information when I am at the party and watch it from the beginning when I get home, or watch it from where ever it is when I get home at 9:30, most likely around half time.
Help!!!!

My wife didn't either
until I took her to the ‘05 Ohio State game. Then she got it and doesn’t question me.

Halftime thoughts
The offense is looking good as long as they don’t get too cute. The OLine has to be more consistent in opening holes for the running backs. Hopefully Royster is good to go in the second half.
The defense looked horrible to start, but shut them out in the second quarter. The defensive line has to tighten up and clog the middle on the running plays. And thus far they aren’t getting any pass rush to speak of. They have to keep Juice in the pocket and make him try to pass the ball. Luckily the Illini shot themselves in the foot with penalties on one drive and turned it over on another.
Mike
Black Shoe Diaries
We're the better team
On offense, there’s no need to throw the deep ball. We’re picking up rushing yards in chunks, and our WR’s have been turning short passes into 1st downs all night long.
Agree about the defense. Make Juice throw, keep him in the pocket. Sell out against the run and make them beat us through the air. That’s when INT’s happen.
Happy with the effort, but feel that we could be winning by at least 2 TD’s right now.

Not surprised they did it. It should’ve worked, too.

Put another way...
Exciting result, bad football.

Respectfully disagree. While it was not a perfect game fof PSU, it was a good result for the first real test.
Comment mishap
I meant the Wisconsin / Michigan game.

Good win
We survived the early Illinois rush. We survived upset saturday. The dream continues for at least another week.

I don't think Purdue is even remotely scary.

True
I can’t see Purdue’s defense putting up much of a fight. The only thing that can kill us is turnovers.

Great performance by the D
Spotted ’em 14 points in the 1st quarter, only 10 points for the rest of the game. Good to have those extra bodies back!!
"We heard all that talk all week about the SEC and their speed, but we knew personally that they weren't nearly as tough as us."

Great win tonight
After watching Wisconsin, I thought the beast two team sin the Big Ten was Illi and Penn State. After tonight, the best team is easily Penn State.
Get me outta SEC country!!
Really, it pains me to deal with these fools.
Ole Miss beating Florida is “it’s the SEC.” Well that Ole Miss team had the pleasure of losing to Wake Forest. That’s not really a great thing to have on your record, especially after Navy knocked them off.
And what a surprise, Va Tech lucks their way to another win. Unfortunately I didn’t get to see the Penn State game… Can’t wait to see how deep this team can go!
How high will we go?
Got in from State College about 2:30 AM. Grrreat game. All white, only a smattering of excuse-me orange. I have concerns about our defense, Illinois at times moved too easily both on the ground and in the air. But we never lost composure and always came right back, looking like champs. Mark May has us at #5, does he have a vote?
Keep it in perspective
Apparently
Corso and Desmond both have us at #4… but I also don’t know if they get votes or not.
Corso
The facilities have a special ballot for Corso. He takes his construction paper and crayon vote and puts it in his own voting slot. Unfortunately, that slot goes to a shredder, which shreds the paper and drops it in Herbstreit’s gerbil’s cage. Corso doesn’t know it, though, and the gerbil enjoys the plush floor material. Everyone wins.
Connecticut #23?
When northwestern and michigan state are just out of the polls at #26 & 27.

Mmm. Feels Good.
Just checking in. The game was a blast, though PSU allowed Illinois to stick around. I think PSU could have had at least two more scores (maybe three) if not for bonehead plays/play-calling.
Highlights of the Game:
(1) The win.
(2) The waves. The regular wave was great and all, but the slow motion, followed by the insanely fast-motion waves, were hilarious. Definitely one of the best game atmospheres I have been at, save for the OSU ’05 game.
I agree 100%
This has been one of the best games I have been at. Before that was The OSU ‘05 game. I do have a question tho. I have never heard that much music being played before. I didn’t know that was allowed. The Waves were the best thing that I have seen.
agree
Great atmosphere, the best I have seen and as much or more excitement than the tOSU game last year.
Keep it in perspective
music
Do you mean songs played over the loudspeaker like……….“Have you ever seen the rain?”—————twice? I think that’s all part of Guido’s strategy in making the PSU game day fun, exciting, and the crowd energized. Whether you’re a fan of piped in music or you’d prefer the blue band, its hard to argue with the fact that its been working.
"Boy that student section now is up and really making a gigantic amount of noise. You see the sea of white, the white out. Well they are 2 minutes and 28 seconds away from the whiteout of the Buckeyes here tonight." - Ron Franklin
yeah the piped in music
I didn’t know you could do it when the other team was in the huddle. I thought you could only do it after you scored. I mean don’t get me wrong it got the crowd going and it was cool to hear so many people sing “Have you ever seen the rain?”……….twice!!
Oh, ok.
I don’t know about not being able to pipe in music while the team’s in the huddle. There must be a gray area there, and I wouldn’t doubt if psu is really pushing the limits. The music tends to fade once they break the huddle, so perhaps you can’t pipe in music when they are at the line of scrimage?
"Boy that student section now is up and really making a gigantic amount of noise. You see the sea of white, the white out. Well they are 2 minutes and 28 seconds away from the whiteout of the Buckeyes here tonight." - Ron Franklin
I think its silly that they see a need to pipe in music to get people energized. If anything, there is just TOO much stimulation going on all the time…one person hitting a cowbell, another guy trying to start a wave for the fiftieth time, then a WE ARE chant starts up, and on top of it all, Guido expects us to sing along to some tacky bon jovi anachronism.
Meanwhile our offense is facing third and long and waving their arms for the student section to quiet down.
I love the energy, i love the cheers, i love the traditions, but the music is unnecessary and embarrassing. It makes it look like our fans don’t care about the football, and need this stuff to get into it. The best parts of the game are when the crowd has its head into the action, not the extracurriculars.
