I'm surprised

Mark Rubin apparently had 10 tackles and I don’t remember any of them. I do remember his blown assignment.

I don’t like posting with just a negative comment. I would have loved to have seen a 17+ point blowout, but I feel more confident now that PSU defeated a very good Illinois team by 14 points after falling behind twice. This is an offense that did not get phased at all by its own missteps and just executed to the tune of 38 points. I really feel they can take this on the road in October, especially with the perfect next game: a road game at Purdue. I wouldn’t want any other team in the Big Ten at this very moment.

Remember one. .

When he blew up a dump to the flats (screen?) after shaking off a block. . .he looked like the only person who could’ve stopped a 40 yd play. . .good open field tackle.

Rubin actually played pretty well

He’s easily our best DB in run support. He was part of that ghastly blown coverage in the second half, but otherwise he held his own, IMO.

This is why

I like to record the game and re-watch them. Unfortunately, not one game this season has been on in my region.

Was that really Maybin that got the sack?

I thought it was Evans that got it. Unless there was another that I don’t remember

ACK

You’re right. That should be a TFL. Not a sack. I’ll fix it. Thanks.

Williams receiving TD

We might need our new Xs and Os guy to review this, but Williams receiving TD was the same play that we talked about earlier in the year where he stepped out of bounds and got mad at himself.
Good video of the game:

Defending the option

We seemed to have a lot of trouble defending all of the option looks illinois ran last night. Zone reads, classic veer from the shotgun, and sprint options all went for big chunks repeatedly. considering ohio state will probably run a lot of those same looks with better personnel, TB better figure out how to get a handle on it. illinois has given us trouble the last 3 years actually. in 06 we got outplayed and got somewhat lucky…but mendenhall ran all over us. last year, everyone knows the story, and this year they averaged 4.5 ypc and gashed us repeatedly. just a concern given the exponential increase in kool-aid being consumed in the last week.

by Governator on Sep 29, 2008 2:43 AM EDT reply actions

Illini O vs. PSU D

Very good points. The Illinois option has troubled the PSU D about as much as anyone in the BigTen over the past 3 years. Particularly this year, I’m a little concerned about our speed at OLB in preventing the RB from getting to the corner. Haven’t seen much of PryOsu this year. Are we expecting a lot of option from them, or just a lot of QB rollout?

by The IC Lion on Sep 29, 2008 8:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Speed isn't the issue with the OLB's

Well, not completely. Bowman and Gbadyu are more than fast enough. It’s Sales and Hull that are the problem.

by Run Up The Score on Sep 29, 2008 8:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Thought on the option

I didn’t get the chance to look back at any of the game, but with the offense rolling I can’t help but wonder if TB was ok with 4.5 ypc. That makes for a very long drive and any foul up on 1st or 2nd down and all of the sudden Illinois is facing a very difficult 3rd and long (that busted end around-pass play comes to mind). Classic bend/don’t break except for that one massive break in the secondary. I was also bothered by the number of 3rd and longs they did convert.

There are still concerns, of course, but I don’t remember any of the option plays going for more than 10, which wasn’t ideal but still allowed the team to close out the game; I have to think TB knew this.

by KevinHD on Sep 29, 2008 9:06 AM EDT up reply actions

D

Agreed. Always wondered why Sales didn’t move inside when Lee went down. Is that a leadership/smarts thing? Speaking of OLB, did Stupar play much/look good? Hard to tell from the blue seats. . .

TB and bend but not break: Nice analysis. Do you think that philosophy applied to getting to the QB in this game too? My initial reaction was that there was a drop off in pass rush this weekend.

by The IC Lion on Sep 29, 2008 9:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Pass Rush

I don’t think they wanted to get a huge pass rush on Juice. I think their goal was to just keep him in the pocket and don’t let him get outside the tackles. The book against Illinois is make Juice beat you with his arm. Don’t let him run for the first down.

I only saw Stupar on special teams. He’s usually the guy closest to blocking the punts. On one play I thought he was going to get one by shoving his man right into the kicker. It was really close.

by BSD on Sep 29, 2008 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions

OSU option

OSU may have better personnel, but they arent necessarily going to run the option better than Illinois. Illinois is geared to run the option offense, whereas Ohio State is sticking a freshmen basketball player behind center in an offense that was originally geared towards a pocket passer.

by JoePaPa on Sep 29, 2008 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Pryor

Has been decent, but the numbers have not been huge. For this season, I’d rather see Pryor than Boeckman. He’s not going to “out athletic” us, and his presence in the game makes the Ohio State playbook thinner, and accodingly harder for them to get the ball to the playmakers on the outside. Unlike last season, I think we’ll be able to safely play run on defense.

by jesse. on Sep 29, 2008 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope so

OSU has been moving the ball with ease the past couple games. I don’t want to get all ESPN on here, but Pryor is playing well. He might not be throwing for 300 yards, but he’ll run for 79 yards on 4 carries. And even if Wells is out for a while, Herron is still a tough RB to face

by WPIALkid22 on Sep 29, 2008 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Wanted to contain Juice

Definately wanted that, and I think that’s why Maybin didn’t get his usual 3 sacks. Most of the time, especially on passing downs, he just beats the blocker on the outside and gets to the QB. But against Illinois I say him spinning inside and pushing his blocker to the inside

Hall just looked lost

Was it just me or did Hall just look lost. I think I am just use to seeing linebackers always in the right place. Why can we not maybe move one of the D-Ends back to the middle linebacker or even move. Maybe move Bowman over to Middle. any thoughts on this?

by jetskijoe on Sep 29, 2008 9:51 AM EDT reply actions

Hull

My disappointment here is with Colasanti. After seeing time as a true freshman last year I was hoping he would get more playing time than he has seen. I’m not sure if there is an injury at play here or what, but I would like to see the kid get more reps to see what he can do.

But I’m not ready to say Hull is the worst linebacker ever. He may be a step slow to get to the play, but he never misses a tackle. When you look at what the Illinois offense did to Missouri, another top 10 team, and then look at what they did against us, I’m starting to think our defense is pretty good. Not great, but pretty good. With our offense that may be enough.

by BSD on Sep 29, 2008 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

No way

is he the worst ever. You all forget Gino Capone that quickly!???

What's your take on Stupar?

It seems he’s getting special teams love, but is that it…I have not seen any “D” stats for him. Wasn’t he/isn’t he a LB too?

Yeah, he is

As is Dailey, from that recruiting class. And in the one after that are three mikes: zordich, yankich & mauti. They’ve moved Dailey & Zordich to offensive backups, but I spose none of the lot of them, including Colasanti & Stupar, have presented the defensive coaches with that question they love to have—the one Sean Lee & Puz gave them early in their playing careers: ‘how can we possibly justify keeping this kid off the field?’

Apparently Josh Hull remains sufficient justification, god bless him. And, in his defense, it’s likely he will continue to improve his knowledge/familiarity, such that his instincts improve enough to look like he is getting ‘faster.’ Now, would it also be cool if one of the younger, more athetically gifted playas also develops increased improvement? Ummm, yeah. But for now, I’ll take Josh Hull over Geno every saturday this fall.

Going for it on 4th down

Was anyone as surprised as me when they handed the ball off to Green up the middle on 4th and 2. Wouldn’t the full back or Royster have been a better option?

by ageing lion on Sep 29, 2008 3:40 PM EDT reply actions

I've heard - and agree to the same

I think a play or two prior to that Royster was hurt.

That Poll's on Fire

Loved BHGP’s texting smack he sent and received. Nice to know we’re providing some big ten envy this year. Hilarious props given to Galen & JayPa, too.
