Has the "Thank You" been canned?

I was at the Beav for the last two games and although the atmosphere was wonderful as always, I was a little saddened by what appears to be a 'Tradition' change.

This year at the end of the WE ARE... Stadium cheer there was no corresponding THANK YOU... YOU'RE WELCOME.  I remember it was faint but still there the last couple years but nothing this year.

I don't mean to come off as an old fogie dinosaur or anything - heck I'm only 34, but I always thought that was way cool and I'd hate to see that go the way of the marsmallow.

Not sure.

I saw our cheerleaders carrying around signs at the Temple game and one of them said “THANK YOU”. I was hoping it was for the purpose you described, because that’s always been a great stadium tradition.

THANK YOU / YOU'RE WELCOME has been replaced

by the super-slow-mo wave.

New wave

I preferred the super fast wave myself. Also, the Marshmallow pelting is back.

I have to admit.........

I have never been a big fan of the Thank You, Your Welcome. That may be sacrilage…….but it always sounded tacked on to me.

Eric Watters, wash your mouth out with soap

right now, young man! Indeed sacrilege: it’s part of our (once upon a time) squeaky clean classiness.

It's Still There

Many of us still said it, but I think the problem was that we entered into an extended “WE ARE… PENN STATE” chant. By the time we got through and were about to say Thank you/Your welcome, kickoff was already underway, so it was cut short. It’s definitely still there and will not go anywhere.

As for the marshmallow

That was recreated on Saturday, though not as greatly as it was in the 90’s

Nice to hear...

It very easily could have been my location…

The club seats seem to be where everything good goes to die… I’m glad this will be my last season there and we can move back to the good ol’ regular seats.

I saw quite possibly the most ridiculous thing at any stadium ever on saturday…

Early in the first qtr a guy cheered a play and then continued standing up and cheering. The guy behind him started yelling all kinds shut up and sit down crap at him and was in fact being quite rude. The original cheer guy (OCG for short) then just continued standing for another play just to tick the rude ass guy (RAG) off. Never said anything just stood – it was well deserved and great.

RAG then stands up and grabs OCG and pulls him down to his seat. OCG is steamed but just sits and takes it. Meanwhile Big douche award winner guy (BDAWG), who at this point is just a bystander yells at OCG and leaps over two rows of seats and into the tunnel.

About 10 minutes later BDAWG returns with a couple of Penn States Finest and they jump all over OCG. Now OCG is PISSED. OCG’s buddy restrains him from going crazy at the campus cops and after listening to his side for a few seconds they remove OCG and his girlfriend so they can tell their side of the story somewhere they can hear them.

Girlfriend comes back a few minutes later to tell OCG’s buddy that they are getting moved to better seats and were apologized to by the cops.

OCG came back later in the second half for a bit with no further incidents…

Crazy times…

I did get to sit beside Eric Shrive’s uncle though and he had some great things to say about the kid and his buddy who’se a TE at Illinois…

Disgraceful.

I wish I had the power to personally interview every ticket holder to determine whether they should be allowed to purchase season tickets.

Very quickly

I’m flooded with Actual Work, but let me give this a shot.

1. How old are you, and do you have any sort of physical handicaps? Are you unable to stand, or do you just not want to occasionally stand for big plays, etc.? If you have an actual, physical injury, that’s fine. You may move closer to the field (that’s right!) so the people behind you can stand. I’m not looking to eliminate older fans, just their crying.

2. If you’re physically limited, will you at least yell and cheer the team? If you can’t/won’t stand, you need to justify your existence somehow. I can guarantee you that a guy in a wheelchair who can roll his gameday program into a megaphone will be universally loved and respected by every single person in the stadium. Do something positive to marginally affect the outcome of the game. Sitting in silence can be accomplished at home.

Like I said, it takes all kinds of fans to…uh, move the world. Or something. I understand that we can’t fill the stadium with 18-45 year old fans who do nothing but stand, scream, and holler the entire game. It’s not possible. But those older fans need to realize that if reality matched up to their wishes, home field advantage would not exist. So, sit the old people closer to the field and let the louder fans shout downward. That would be totally fine, and effective.

Another thing.

If you can handle walking around the stadium, tailgating all day, and then walking up all those steps and ramps to your seat, guess what? You can occasionally stand for a big play!

I hate the people who get all bitchy about when people stand

especially when it is a “stand up and cheer” type of situation. I understand if the “annoyed” person is elderly or disabled, or even a small child, in which case I’m the first person to sit when I’m in front of them, but if you have some 40-50 yr old guy who is just lazy and has no team spirit, then F them.

My personal favorite “annoying fan” story is this:
For the 2005 Michigan game (the one we “lost” with negative 1 second on the clock), one of my friends took a leave from the Army and flew in for the weekend from Germany to see the game (booked his tickets about 2 minutes after we won the OSU game). Anyway, I had bought tickets off of Stubhub, and I did my best to get them in the PSU section (called both Michigan’s and PSU’s athletic ticket offices to inquire about the correct section), but wound up being one section away, in the middle of the scUM alumni section.

When we got there and saw the mistake, we asked if people on our bench would like to shift down into our seats (we were the aisle seats) so we could sit on the other side which was adjoining the PSU section. Everyone just acted all bitchy and said no to us, especially one fine specimen of Ann Arbor whoriness that was sitting right next to me with her 2 teenaged kids.

So the game is going on, and sometime during the second quarter a bunch of UofM fans in the front rows of our section started standing up for long durations, which of course forces everyone behind them to stand up, including 2 other PSU fans that were 2 rows in front of us, directly in front of the bitchy lady. She gets exceedingly pissed off at the 2 PSU fans, yelling at them to sit down. After about 10 minutes of constant yelling (to which the PSU guys just responded that they can’t sit down because everyone in front of them is standing, and they want to see the game), the woman takes a game program and rolls it up and literally starts jabbing them as hard as she could in the back of their ribs with it, repeatedly. The PSU guys turn around with this “WTF” look on their face, but of course don’t sit down.

My buddy and I are sitting in the aisle, so we could sit and look down the aisle and watch the game, and we had some elderly people behind us, so we tried to sit as much as possible. I even ask bitchy woman if she would like to trade seats with us, since then she could sit and watch the game, and she gets even huffier and puffier and declares that she is sitting in HER seats, and she WON’T move for Penn State fans. I just laugh at her idiocy.

At around 2 minutes left in the first half her and her kids eventually get up and leave. I figure they’re going to the bathroom or something, but they never came back (not that I minded).

I would make some comment about how the scUM fans are horrible, but to be honest, in the 3 games I’ve gone to at the Big House, 2 of which I sat in “enemy territory”, nearly all the UofM fans have actually been really great, and about as nice of fans as I’ve seen anywhere. Even when it looked like UofM was about to lose in the 2005 games they were all saying to my friend and I “great game, you guys deserve to win this one, and deserve to win the Big 10”. Of course after they wound up winning (with negative 1 second on the clock), they still acted nice and gracious, and didn’t rub it in our faces at all.

Yeah, I agree completely.

I got club seats for last year’s Ohio State game on a whim. The ticket holders, whom I think are older alums, are extremely lame. I was the only person standing or yelling and I could definitely see what you described happening. However, the view is excellent.

to add from earlier:

definitely true, the student section still yells it, it’s just hard to coordinate the thank you/welcome at the end of the cheer.

similar experience

I always try and make it into the stadium for the Phil Collins song which always pumps me up for the game. Our party was stuck in traffic just coming into the stands at the WE gate and the press of people pushes us a little out away from the gate. Apparently having someone stand BRIEFLY in their way at least ten minutes BEFORE game time is too much for this middle-aged couple in club seating. The look of haughty contempt and annoyance on their faces spoke volumes already, but then the lady utters : “just find your seat….find your damn seat” in such a patronizing way that the less even-keeled among us might want to throttle her. Nevermind that the eighteen million people flowing out of the WE tunnel had kind of created a motionless bottleneck that we were powerless to change. One hopes an event like this would bring people together and suspend the petty isscht that troubles everybody’s day-to-day life, but apparently all fans are not created equal.

On a related note, Juggernitt, I agree about Ann Arbor….During the ‘05 heartbreaker, we sat behind the nicest elderly couple I’ve ever had the pleasure to share the stands with. Diehard scUM fans to the bone but beautiful people. The old man even took my dangerous gyrations (and raucous, if ill-timed, statements of : “WE TOOK THIS HOUSE”) in gracious stride when M-Rob punched it in with a minute-whatever on the clock. After the game they thanked us for coming, for the great game PSU played and the old man shook our hands. Nice Folks

I miss the thank you, too

It’s not totally absent, but seems to fade out on the extended, stadium-wide exchanges, probably because of length. Fans don’t really know when the We Are is gonna end….it just fades, which doesn’t leave any room for the fully-articulated Thank You.

When navigating crowds (between tailgates or on the ramps) and engaging our neighbors with this holiest of Penn State chants, we stick to three We Are’s and a Thank You for conciseness…

Super Cool Action Fun Fan Section

Teams all over are adding fan friendly or family sections. Wouldn’t it be cool if there could be a student section for grown ups? Don’t bring the kids if you want to sit in SJC but be sure to bring marshmallows, jello shots and a helmet to deflect falling cup towers flying chunks of ice.

Yes

I’d like two in the binge drinking/throwing stuff section please?

A great idea that’s time will never come. It’s a shame.

Thank you's

I’m not sure if the Thank you/You’re Welcome has been scrapped. I think everyone just doesn’t know when the spirited “We Are…Penn State” should end, especially at a game like Illinois. The normal is three We Ares and the TY/YW, but again I think most people just want the effect of the We Are more than the TY/YW. People who yell it from the upper levels while you’re leaving the stadium and the guys along the street always say Thank You. So I don’t know if it’s officially been scrapped or if its just drowned out by the We Ares. I would watch for when the cheerleaders stop waving the We Are…Penn State flags at the beginning, then listen for it, I have to imagine, especially from the students that the tradition will continue.

TY/YW

I always thought the three “We Are…Penn State” followed by the TY/YW was pretty standard too. The last game I went to was the Capital One Bowl against Auburn (don’t get me started on the offensive play calling in that game) and that’s how it was then.

Maybe the resurgence has changed the rules a bit?
