Oregon State Beavers - Building The Dam...
I started visiting their site a few weeks back to read about their team and hoped to see a little activity in regards to our upcoming game - their opinions on PSU. The holiday may be causing a posting hangover, but not much activity yet. Of course there hasn't been much Beaver talk over here yet either.
They seem like a civil lot. So I did put out an open invite for some Beavers to come to BSD for some game talk. Hopefully we get some thoughtful opposing viewpoints.
Thanks for the fanpost! Please do not post any content from a premium site that requires a subscription. Also, if you just want to share a link consider using fanshots instead. Thanks.

I'll start it off for the Beavers
Ok so here’s what has been on our minds since the loss to Stanford and the upcoming game against Penn State.
1. We should have won the game. I don’t know if any of you Penn State folks watched. But we should have won. Even Joe Pa said we should have won. It was a heart breaking loss to say the least, and the reason you don’t start off on the road against a conference opponent.
2. We gave up way too many rushing yards. WAY too many. Granted they ran the ball 48 times and only averaged 4.4 yards per rush, it was a far cry from the OSU rush defense that our fans have come to know and love. Don’t know if you all knew this, but OSU had top 3 rush defenses nationally the last 2 years, and led the nation in tackles for a loss. I didn’t see your game against CC, but I saw the box score and wanted to throw up. 334 yards rushing. GROSS.
3. We have a penchant for blowing it in nationally televised games on the road early in the season. We have the 3rd most wins of any Pac 10 team since 2000, only behind USC and the scum (Oregon) but you wouldn’t know it because all you see is the loss to LSU, and the blowouts to Louisville, Boise State, and Cincinnati. Did you guys know that we’ve won 19 games the last 2 years? Probably not. This game has the makings of a classic early season blowout for Oregon State.
4. How are we going to handle playing at Happy Valley? Our stadium has 50,000 capacity, and usually only gets between 45,000 and 47,000 per game. The closest thing we’ve come to playing in a stadium with this many people is USC, about 95,000. And the loudest is the scum. I’m sure you’ve all heard about how great Autzen Stadium is. Bleh. Easy to be loud when you pump noise through the speakers…
5. I think we’re all excited to play against Joe Pa. Penn State has been one of the most relevant programs for a long time and it’s exciting stuff for our program who has only started winning in the last decade.
Now I know you Penn State fans (along with most of us OSU fans, even the most optimistic) are expecting a PSU blowout. But can any one of you give me some hope as to why, just why, Oregon State might come in there and steal the win?

Hurricane Hannah
The weather is going to make this game a shit show, plain and simple.
If the weather forecasters are right, there is going to be heavy rain and strong winds friday night into saturday. The strong winds will good for us, since our secondary is swiss cheese. Hopefully with the wind and the rain, you guys won’t pass all over us.
BUT, your silver lining is that weather will be the great equalizer in this game. Players will fumble more than they should, slip on tackles and will have trouble with footing.
I, for one, am excited to spend the day tailgating and drinking in the rain. The part I am worried about is when we enter the stadium during a monsoon. The weather could change everything.

Well we are Oregonians...
We slip and slide around in the mud and the muck for 8 months a year. The rain is nothing new for our boys. Hopefully that helps us out. It sounds like its going to be a ground game though. That hurts us.

Tailgating
I’d like to put something on Building the Dam for the Beavers fans letting them know a basic guide to Happy Valley tailgating and good bars and what not. Remember that our fans are respectful and civil and just want to have fun (until we play Washington and Oregon of course). Anyways, if someone has any insight on what to do while in the area that’d be great, just so us fans have something to do after the game and a place to watch some more college football. I think a lot of fans are staying in Pittsburgh as well, so any help there would be greatly appreciated.

May god have mercy on the souls of those folks staying in Pittsburgh!
Kidding, it can be a fun town, although you’ll be getting there pretty late on Saturday night after the game.
As far as things to do, just drive towards the stadium and park wherever. Tailgaters at PSU are a friendly bunch, and would certainly welcome some out of town guests. If you’re downtown in the morning, there’s a lot of shopping on College & Beaver avenues, as well as about 25 bars. Most any can be the home of a great time.
Something to note: Pennsylvania’s liquor laws are ridiculously ass-backward. If you’re planning on bringing beer/liquor/wine to the tailgate, you can’t just buy it in the grocery store or gas station like every other state in the union. Cases of beer need to come from distributors (there are three or four in and around town), although you can get 12 or 6 packs at a couple of “bottle shops” right downtown. Wine & liquor need to come from “State Stores”, which can be found on the outskirts of town. If this sounds like a big pain in the ass – congrats, you’re right! Ask someone at your hotel for help.

Thanks a bunch!
I just posted that on Building the Dam. I had heard that liquor laws were a little ridiculous over there, but didn’t know they were THAT bad. We always complain in Oregon because we have to get liquor at a designated “liquor store” and they are only open until 7. Everywhere else on the west liquor can be bought at any grocery store. I am now eternally grateful that I can go to my 7/11 to get a cube of beer.

Quite welcome. Parking lots open at 8am, and will be filled with tailgates come rain or shine.
Looking forward to the game – should be great.

Also worth noting
If you want to have a good time tailgating and do not already have a parking pass, plan on getting to the lots at or before 8am. If you try to show up at 10am, you will end up in the cow pastures pretty far from the stadium.
Good rule of thumb is that the tailgates closer to the stadium are usually a bit better.
Shogun, we should visit each other’s tailgates sometime and compare notes and drink some beers. You sound like you’ve got a pretty good show going on at yours.
We usually end up in the yellow lot right across from the soccer field, but since we get in line for the lot really early, we are usually the first ones in line and get the first spot.

Coverage Map
Has anybody seen the ESPN/ABC coverage map for the game? I keep waiting for it to be published, but nothing yet. For those of us in the mountain west, the coverage map becomes the holy grail for planning Saturdays in the fall.

i thought
that if it wasn’t on ABC it would end up on ESPN2…so everyone should be alright.

I hope so
I’m counting on it. I’m in that blue mass down south. So if it ain’t on ESPN2 there’s going to be some ‘splainin’ to do Lucy.

ESPN2
I hope so, too. I have a bar-b-que planned for the game! I checked my directv channel guide this morning, but it still says TBA for the teams on ESPN2. I wish they would publish this stuff a little earlier just for piece of mind.

That is the way it worked
last year. Since the B10 games are no longer part of ESPN Gameplan the regional ABC’s landed on the Deuce. I am praying that is the case this year – or else Miss vs. Wake will be on my tele and I will be stuck listening to PSU on the internets.

Oregon State visitor's guide to Penn State
So if you are coming to Penn State from Oregon State, let me be the first to say welcome to Happy Valley! Here are some recommendations of things to do before and after the game around town to have a true Penn State experience.
Your best bet is to get a map of campus and the surrounding area when you get into town. State College is a pretty small town with 2 main streets that run parallel to each other, College Ave is the main street, and Beaver Ave is behind it. Both of these streets are immediately south of campus. The majority of your time in State College (aside from tailgating and being at the game) will be spent here.
Souvenirs, Apparel, etc: I recommend the following –
McLanahan’s (note: the have a 1/2 off sidewalk sale Sundays after the game – good stuff)
Family Clothesline
SBS (Studen Book Store)
These are all within 2 blocks of each other
Some of my favorite bars and their signature drink (in no particular order):
Cafe 210 West – $2 Long Island Iced Teas and outdoor seating
The Saloon – Monkey Boy pitchers (I like bong water and tidy bowl!)
The Phyrst – Any beer, but you HAVE to go for Saturday night table wars. Lots of fun!
Gingerbread Man – Again, beer. But their food is good, especially the wedges.
Things you MUST do to get the true PSU experience:
Grilled stickies at Ye Old College Diner (even better at 2am when wasted!)
Ice cream at the Berkley Creamery – the biggest and best ice cream cone you will ever have for under $3! (FYI this is on campus and close to the stadium)
Breakfast at the Waffle Shop (very long line Sunday morning)
$1 pizza slices when your drunk – anywhere on Beaver Ave
$1 cheesesteak special at Penn State sub shop when you’re drunk – even if you don’t eat here, you have to go in and check out the wall of pictures
Visit the lion shrine and Old Main (eh, whatever)
Also good to know:
Beer distributors bookend the campus on the East and West ends (College Ave)
Wal-Mart bookends the campus on the North (Atherton St) and East ends (College Ave)
Grocery Stores (Giant) bookends the campus on the North (Atherton St) and East ends (College Ave)
Liquor stores bookend the campus on the North and South ends on Atherton Street
Also, if you don’t have a car or are too drunk to drive, Taxis run around the clock and are very inexpensive. The main taxi #s are (814) 231-Taxi and (814) 353-6001.
Hopefully this is helpful and you guys can check out some of this stuff while you’re visiting. And if you don’t know where something is or can’t find it, just ask. We are a friendly group…there’s a reason why they call this Happy Valley.
If there was one thing I would say you absolutely have to do, it would be the grilled stickies at the Diner. Even Todd Blackledge ate here when he did his “Taste of the Town” piece last year for the PSU vs ND game.
Anyone else care to add to this? I’m sure there are some things I forgot to add.
I bleed Blue and White.

Zeno's
I would hit Zeno’s (corner of College / S. Allen…right in the heart of downtown) for tasty beers. You might even find a few Oregon brews on tap. Downside = it can get crowded and it isn’t that big of a place to begin with.

I love the Deli
one of my favorite places. Used it to get tuned up early before heading elsewhere. Do they still have 1/2 off specials? B/c that always led to an abundance of car bombs.

About those bars...
Just FYI: The Cafe 210 West unfortunately no longer sells the vaunted Long Island Pitchers on game weekends. I was just there this past weekend and there weren’t even selling them on Sunday. Also when its raining, the Cafe isn’t the same.
My recommandation is The Gingerbread Man if you like to drink beer and watch football. $4 Coors Light Pitchers all Saturday long and at least 1 projection tv among many others.
by rbz14 on Sep 4, 2008 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But Cafe 210 still has $2 Long Island 16oz cups
3 or 4 of those and you are F**ked!

But not for the food
My friend works in the kitchen of Mad Mex and he says that none of the food at Mad Mex is made there. All of the bigger items like tacos and burritos and whatnot are brought in frozen and then reheated in the kitchen. Good for booze, bad for food.
Oh OhOhOh Oh Oh!

other advice
i still love the rathskeller for post-game. dead in the middle of college ave, 4$ pitchers (i think), and excellent food.
does anyone know if the darkhorse is still solid? i haven’t been there in a few years.
do NOT go to the sports cafe. EVER.
