I don't know, Mello Yello is pretty awful. What's the worst that could happen?

Your answer is in there:
One of the universe’s eternal truths:
"People bet on [Notre Dame] no matter how bad they are," says Stoneback.

July Genius
I don’t know about right now, but I bought a $20 ticket for PSU to win the title @ 50-1

me too...
though i only put $10 on it. I also put $20 on the nittany lions at 6-1 to win the big ten.
I wouldn't trust old rooster me neither.

That is called
Notre Dame bias. Everybody knows that if Notre Dame even remotely pretends to be like a good team and trips over itself going 11-1 (look at their schedule, its a terrifying thought but they could be 10-1 going into USC) the pollsters and anybody who undeservedly has a say in the whole process will find a way to put Notre Dame in the Nat’l Title game, which gives them a one-game shot at it. Although I’d still take at least 22 of the top 25 teams straight up against them right now, they’ll sadly get a shot if they mop up the cupcakes and somehow beat SC

Can anyone explain those lines to me
I’m not one who bets on sports much, if ever. Through the years I’ve been able to figure out SOME betting terms, but I don’t quite get what these lines mean. PSU +1800…that can’t mean 1800-1 odds that PSU would win, can it? I mean then even the current favorites, Oklahoma, would still be 200-1. Can anyone explain.
by The JuggerNitt on Sep 30, 2008 4:40 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
it means....
….if you bet $100 on PSU, you win $1800
conversely if the line is -500….you would have to bet $500 to win $100

So basically
18-1 odds (or 1-5 odds)
Is the minimum bet 100? otherwise, why use the multiples of 100?
by The JuggerNitt on Sep 30, 2008 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
exactly....
…..no minumum usually (maybe $10 at a casino)….they just use multiples of $100 for easy math i guess
by hbeach08 on Sep 30, 2008 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
lol, yes
because multiples of 100 are MUCH easier than multiples of 1 :-D
Either it is complicated for complicated’s sake, or perhaps there is another, underlying reason that we don’t know about (perhaps they just like the "big bettor’ feel with bigger numbers?)
by The JuggerNitt on Sep 30, 2008 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
good point....
…..it goes a little further than that actually. when a game is on a tote board….you see something like this
-8 PSU -250
MICH +250
the minus eight represents the point spread (PSU is favored by 8)….the +/- 250 numbers are the money line. no point spread, just how much you stand to win if either team wins/loses. another way of expressing this would be, PSU is a 1-2.5 favorite….I think that would clutter the board, and probably to your point, casinos like people laying down c-notes :)

or maybe
they just really hate decimal points ;-)

Please Don't Take This Article Seriously
It is flat out wrong on several assertions and horrendously written.
It was a week to remember for college football bettors. Plenty of money was won and lost on the numerous upsets and marquee matchups that headlined Week 5 of the NCAAF schedule.
Uh, Jason. Plenty of money is won and lost EVERY week. Stupid start, but it only gets worse.
The biggest upset of the season sent USC plummeting in the polls, but barely registered a blip on the BCS futures list. The Trojans were victims to a jacked-up Oregon State squad that was fueled by an insane home crowd and capitalized on turnovers. Southern Cal, which dropped to No. 9 in the land, moved slightly from a +150 favorite to +350. Oddsmakers still have a lot of faith in the Trojans’ title hopes.
Moved slightly? That’s a pretty big jump. Going from one seemingly small number to another might not seem like much, but that’s a 133% increase in odds. Perhaps if a team moved from +1500 to +3500, this guy would think it’s a HUGE jump. But it’s the same as USC’s change.
It seems books were just as taken with the Crimson Tide’s showing, moving them from +2000 to +600 following Saturday’s SEC showdown. Georgia fell from +450 to +1000.
This kind of shows what I’m talking about. +2000 to +600 is a huge move, a 70% reduction, and this shows the books were ‘taken’ by Alabama. But 133% increase, eh, that’s barely a blip.
Penn State opened the season as a +1500 but were ignored by futures bettors until books were forced to move them to +2500 just to draw action. Since then, the Lions are playing like a BCS contender and are currently +1800 after Saturday’s victory.
Maybe this is true in Vegas, but it’s nowhere near the truth with most offshore shops. PSU was around +5000 at most places when the season started, and are now +1200 pretty much everywhere you look.
The Irish are rising on the BCS favorites list mostly in part to their loyal fan base. Notre Dame opened at +10000 back in April and have been bet down to +5000, +2500 and now to its current place at +1500.
This may be true, I don’t know. But if it is, holy hell, people are even dumber than I thought. Cuz you can still plop down on them at +10000 (or 100 to 1) at most offshores, and even that is a grim number.
