Here's an idea...
Well I have been wanting to say something for awhile now, from back when the OTL piece came out. This whole thing about Penn State being angelic and the recently turning in to Sodom is garbage. It is very well true in perception, but not reality. You think no one got in trouble in the 80's when we were at our best? B.S. This was largely all hyped up because of the 87 Fiesta bowl against Miami to make us look like choir boys. I digress. In the Harrisburg Patriot News the day after the OTL piece they had an awesome article. In it they spoke to several former PSUers including Matt Millen about the topic. These former players had declined interview on OTL because they disagreed with the premise and were angered when the "journalist" tried to insist the former guys were perfect while they denied it. They had numerous stories of fights, credit card fraud, drinking, etc. Doesn't make it right, but its not like its anything new in the world of college football, even at PSU.
ALSO i think there is one very important thing being overlooked. We are not/have not been in trouble for questionable recruiting(Ron Zook, Minnesota) or for academic scandal(BOWDEN, THE Ohio Staint university). So while the players may not have the hardest go at school, we aren't cheaters and to me, what happened at FSU this past year is ten times more awful then even half our players getting stoned and fighting people.
Just my opinion.
Other past examples: Kerry Collins was a drunk, Bobby Engram stole a car radio, Jurevicious and Enis took suits, M-Rob, Matt Rice, and Ed Johnson got in a fight outside the ice rink in 05; Rashard Casey? LaVon Chisley?....etc...etc...etc Its not new folks.

Interesting point you have
About the ‘87 Fiesta Bowl solidifying us as the “choir boys”. It was the media that portrayed us as the good guys going up against the Miami thugs. That really did help boost Penn State’s image as a squeaky clean institution. Nice observation. You get a recommendation.

There's
more media scrutiny now than ever and that contributes to the constant reporting of things that never got reported before. However, someone mentioned in another thread about old-timers blaming players from Maryland for getting in more trouble than others. This might be the case, I did a real quick check of the hometowns of some players recently in trouble and it appears that most are from the eastern megalopolis where the culture is more permissive and soft on crime. When players come from that environment to a place like State College where law enforcement is serious about crime and you have an overzealous DA to boot, it could make for a tough adjustment.

Yeah
I remember how LJ used to be the crap out of his girlfriend when he was still in undergrad, Ed Johnson and how he harassed that girl to get kicked out for the 05 season, the parties and stuff. Nothing is new really, its just that there’s the internet that allows the information to spread. You can’t hide anything anymore. Plus, you got some idiots who want to “keep it real” but forget that “keeping it real” DOES go wrong. And before anyone tries to call me racist, I’m a black female who knew some of the players when I went there (01-06).

During the '86 National Championship Season
Evan JayPa was in the mix. I had a friend on the team and if I remember correctly, Jay and the rest of the guys that did not travel as red-shirts that season had a pretty kick-ass party at Joe’s house. Joe found out b/c some dummy was blabbing about it at practice. Man was Joe pissed. Imagine that happening today? The party would be on Y outube, the cops would have been there and it would have been all over the wires before the team returned to State College.

Re: During the '86 National Championship Season
I don’t buy that for a second.
You’re telling me Jay Paterno had friends? And was cool enough to throw a party?
Sounds like a tall tale.
