Syracuse
I was talking to the old man (class of 69) today, he is drooling over Syracuse. He hates Syracuse.
I met my fraternity brothers fiancée, she told me that she went to Syracuse, I snorted, and spit on the ground. She wasn’t surprised, the folks at Syracuse hate Penn State too, but she asked me to explain what it was all about.
So I tried…
“You see….uh…. Ben Schwartzwalder… umm… Archibold Stadium…ahhhh…Rip Engle… uhh… Syracuse sucks.”
I checked the score today, Syracuse lost to Akron by three touchdowns...at home. Not to mention the ass kicking Northwestern gave them last week.
The old man insists that Joe Paterno hates Syracuse, even more than Pitt, and that we’ll run the score up next week. I don’t know that it makes any sense, but I’m all for a good sold ass kicking next week.
You know, just for old times' sake.

How about some Orange Crush?.....
I would love to see a beat down. When I was a PSU student in the mid 80’s they spray painted the nittany lion statue orange. Really pissed me off.

The legand now is that...
Sue Paterno did that to build bad blood.

I love the story.......
about him taking a 25k payment for his role instead of a piece of the box office and royalties. Good decision.

I had another picture...
he was standing in front of the blackboard with “SATAN” (the most intriguing character….as you all know from your reading) written on it, but it just didn’t fit in the box right.
How that movie still gets funnier every year I will never understand.

Here's the story
In 1980, Sue Paterno painted the Lion Shrine orange with watercolor, washable paint. The players didn’t know, though, thought the shrine had been vandalized, came out and routed Cuse.
But the next time Syracuse came to PSU, they’d taken the inspiration and painted the shrine orange with acrylic paint. They couldn’t [and haven’t] washed the entire statue, the bottom is still orange today.

I thought PSU was an indy
Before they joined the Big 10. So I guess my question is where did this rivalry arise from? I had never known that these schools hated each other.
by The VD Special on Sep 7, 2008 9:00 PM EDT 0 recs
you are correct.
we were independent until 1993, the psu rivalry with syracuse comes from the old “eastern” football, where we had intense rivalries with syracuse, west virginia, pitt, rutgers, temple, etc. who at one time (maybe excluding temple and rutgers) were top tier teams in the east

Believe it or not
the team that Penn State dethroned to become the dominant team in Eastern Football was Syracuse. In the 1950’s the Penn State/Syracuse rivalry was quite intense, Syracuse coach Ben Schwartzwalder and then Penn State coach Rip Engle absolutley hated each other. The games were hotly contested and intense. Eventually, under Paterno, all of the eastern schools fell subject to the tyrany of the Nittany Lions. From 1970 froward only Pitt managed to beat Penn State more than three or four times, Syracuse and West Virginia would have losing streaks against Penn State than ran more than ten games.
But when you are talking about a rivalry that has a relevant period that pre-dates Joe Paterno being the head coach at Penn State, it’s a long dead rivalry. Of course, bitter feelings will die hard sometimes.

Anyone going to Tonic East in NYC to watch the game?
If so, let me know. I am going there to watch. Would be nice if a group of BSD-ers could meet up there and represent.

Anyone know of a Syracuse blog where we can go to talk some $HIT?
Oregon State seemed like a nice enough bunch, so now I have 2 weeks worth of trash talk I need to unload.

This is a Syracuse fan from the link about what to watch for during the game:
Our Coach. If he comes out of the tunnel you’re offense is assured of at least 30 points. If he trips and knocks himself out, all bets are off.
I don't know, Mello Yello is pretty awful. What's the worst that could happen?

Not sure how much fun it is
Syracuse is a defeated fan base right now. Try to talk smack with them and they will likely just agree with you. But here are my two favorite Orange blogs.

I am so glad that we have come out on top
I am not sure why PSU prevailed over Pitt, Rutgers, and Syracuse from the age when all were competitive with each other. I am happy with how it turned out, we just take our great program for granted when we could be sitting in Syracuse’s shoes very easily.

Good question
I’m not sure why PSU survived and prospered while Pitt, Rutgers, and Syracuse fell to the wayside. But it would be a fascinating thing to research and do a blogpost on. I’ll have to save it for the offseason though.

Simple
Joe Paterno didn’t take the Steelers or Michigan job in 1969, or the New England job in 1973.

I don't know
By 1989 Joe Paterno had been at Penn State 23 years, and we were coming out of his first losing season (1988) follwed but a good, not not great 1989 season. Also, that would have been about when the negotiations to join the Big Ten started. I don’t remember hearing anything about the Seahawks talking to Paterno around that time, and my impression is that I would probably would have.
I have a very difficult time believing that he seriously considered leaving Penn State at that point.

Yup.
Nobody thinks we’re going to beat anyone other than Northeastern, even in a down year for the Big East. Everyone thinks Greg Robinson should have been fired immediately after losing to Akron. We’re becoming nostalgic for Paul Pasqualoni.
It’s depressing.
At least we’ve got hoops and lax.

I bugged out...
… and live in SoCal now. Back when I lived near Syracuse, I couldn’t afford tickets (also, the Orange were usually in that not quite good enough to be in the top 10, but good enough to scare top 10 teams limbo that PSU fans are surely all too familiar with).
Now, I wish the Orange would play a game at San Diego State. I could see the game, and the Orange just might win.
