Jerome Hayes Likely Out For Season

This kind of news really makes you feel terrible.

"It didn't look good. The doctors said coming off, Dr. Sebastianelli, we'll probably know tomorrow the outcome of that one," Bradley said. "That affects us... losing him... I can't believe it happened to him again.

"It does (make me emotional). He's been such a big part of our team and everything we do, not just on the field but off the field, workouts, he's such a big part of the spirit of our football team. He sets the tone on defense... that's going to hurt us a lot but we'll rally."

It is even more frustrating when it happens because of an illegal chop block.

by bmg125 on Sep 7, 2008 8:42 AM EDT   0 recs

I didn't get to see it

In Canada ABC switched away to the Oklahoma game before the 4th quarter, and then to the Wake game. I only got to see Devlin in one drive also.

Can someone comment on how Devlin played? I was following along on the ESPN “gamecast” and it seemed like his hands were tied, but how was did his decision making look? accuracy of pass? touch?

by platnumkid on Sep 7, 2008 10:04 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I was at the game

I was also at the game when he tore his ACL last season, aweful stuff. Watching him get hurt again was maybe the most excruciating thing I’ve ever seen in a PSU game. He got up after the dirty block, realized his knee was blown, tried to lean on his teammate for support, then fell down and threw his helmet 5 yards in frustration.

It was absolutely heart-wrenching. And it was on a meaningless late-game punt.

Devlin came in and looked flat — he couldn’t get a first down and basically looked uninspired. We left with about 6 minutes to go so maybe he did pick it up late… But it should be noted that in the same situation last year, when Clark would go in late in a game, he always played like the game was on the line — running in a TD against Wisky last year etc etc.

I think Hayes is a good candidate for a medical hard-ship freebie season. I really think he should pursue that and I hope they consider it.

Hayes

ever since the ND game last year I have been a big fan of his…
Like all, I was just shaking my head when it happened…even MORE PISSED on the chop block! That OSU kid should have to sit with JH through all his rehab and watch his facial expressions and cold swet he"ll go thru again during the build-back phase. Wonder why THAT play draws a penalty now numb-nuts..!

Wasn't he the one...

that was getting bullied on the ground by two ND guys last year?
I saw that on TV and I was screaming at my TV asking “WHAT THE F#CK IS THAT”.
That was awful.

I was at the OSU game yesterday and I still missed the chop block. You’re description really hits home. I hope he rehabs quick.

That shite is weak.

Feel free to post away over on Building the Dam...

That guy is still making excuses for the loss. Looks like the Ducks fans like to post over there too. Some good stuff. http://www.buildingthedam.com/2008/9/6/608887/postgame-react-and-game-su#comments

I don't even know what to say

I feel so bad for the poor guy.

Will the real Derrick Williams please stand up?

This is horrible.

I just feel so bad for this kid.

I blame this injury completely on the coaches

Yes, it was a cheap shot, but there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE FIELD that late in the 4th with such a big lead. Just dumb on the coaches’ part, and very unfortunate for Hayes. I wish him the best.

I bleed Blue and White.

by Horse N Buggy on Sep 7, 2008 1:11 PM EDT   0 recs

Well...

I mean, like.. they have to play the whole game. Somebody has to be out there. It sucks that he got hurt, but they are all football players, they want to play.

That's why they have a 3rd string

Besides, that’s the only way those guys will gain valuable game-speed experience.

Why was Jerome on the field??

I agree that someone has to be out there covering punts in the fourth quarter of a blowout. But WHY was it a starter at a position where PSU is already thin?

There had to be SOMEONE on that sideline who could have taken Jerome’s place on the punt team. There had to be a young player who won’t get in 20 plays all season long who would have loved getting on the field. I could look at the roster and find a few good candidates, I’m sure.

Somebody on that coaching staff wasn’t thinking.

by PSUFanInVA on Sep 8, 2008 9:07 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It is not the coaches fault...

I can’t think of a team in America who has a second team punt unit, that can easily be called out there. You have subs but not a whole unit… It was unfortunate, my family and I are good friends with Jerome, and he is a fine young man, and he is going through a rough time mentally accepting this I am sure. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers because this is a tough situation, and alot guys fold after a second major injury.

Success without honor is like an unseasoned dish, it will fill you up but it won't taste good. - Joe V. Paterno

Seriously

Most teams don’t even really practice punts under live circumstances because they are so dangerous. You have to have people in there who know their assignments, and have practiced them both in walk throughs and in live action. In a manner of speaking, those late game special teams plays are practice for late season games. Which is probably why Boone took advantage of an Oregon State player who was sloppy in his punt coverage, even though I can’t imagine why anybody would have thought that was a good situation to show that play.

Ray Guy Award Instincts

That’s why Boom is on the squad. Too bad we won’t punt the rest of the year with our offense.

by Cairo on Sep 8, 2008 1:32 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Just a Thought

Could the cheap hit have been retaliation for the fake punt? The play before that was the fake punt that got called back. Maybe OSU didn’t like us calling a fake punt with that big a lead.

by BSD on Sep 7, 2008 9:45 PM EDT   0 recs

I forget where I heard it...

But it wasn’t supposed to be a fake punt. Jeremy Boone saw that someone was left unblocked and tried to take it himself. Too bad there was a flag on the play.

by GreatScawt on Sep 7, 2008 10:33 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't see the logic in taking out a guy's knee

for a fake punt, I missed the snap of the punt and assumed it was a a bad snap that he just ran because the punt would’ve had it blocked. Besides Penn State’s offense had pretty much turned it off anyway.

by PSU Nick on Sep 8, 2008 12:58 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe so

But the way it looked to me, Boone wasn’t under any pressure and he looked like he was going to throw as soon as he caught the ball. Then he tucked it and ran.

I recall reading somewhere that after the game Boone said he noticed one of the gunners wasn’t covered, so maybe he was doing what he was coached to do and called the fake. He may have tried to pass the ball but the gunner took off down field and didn’t look back, so then he tucked it and ran.

I haven’t gone back to look at the tape again so I’m not sure, but it looked like a fake right from the snap to me.

by BSD on Sep 8, 2008 10:49 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

They asked Paterno why he called a fake

and he said that he didn’t. Your assessment about the audible is probably correct.

Here is the link

This is what I was talking about.

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/college/pennstate/s_586959.html

NO FAKE: With just under nine minutes remaining and Penn State on top 45-14, punter Jeremy Boone ran for an apparent first down from punt formation. The play was nullified by an illegal shift penalty. Boone said he looked to pass, then ran because a rusher was left uncovered by a teammate. Ironically, when Boone did punt on the next snap, Jerome Hayes ended up suffering a knee injury in coverage.

eh uhmm...

Jesse…wouldn’t you say it WOULD be appropriate for the stadium fans to practice and LEARN the COWBELL “cords” (ha!) for the intro as well?

Every time #22 scores / or like you’ve notes – on a good carry…Break out the cowbells!

…it would be wild to do in unison…

Since Devon is still in school, and had recently posted ( if I recall correctly ) that he is not much for the cowbells…he can tutor before the game…they’ll get in sync!

I always assume people get my refrences

and in reality they seldom do. That was the line Major League, the bitch owner when “Wild Thing” plays. I can see why you would not have put the two together, I wasn’t trying to be a dick.

Trust me the last thing you want to be is 7 years old with a song that rhymes your name with girl, the fact that Jesse had a desirable girl was lost on second graders.

Press Confrence quote

It looked like one to me too but I don’t think it was. I’d like to talk to Larry Johnson about that ‘fake punt.’ I think that he may have just juggled the ball or something like that and decided to take off. But it may have been a fake punt. I don’t know. I let those guys – I give them a little freedom. But I never thought we would’ve fooled around with a fake punt when we had the ball game.
