It Is What It Is
Congratulations to the USC Trojans. Mark Sanchez had a career day. We were uncharacteristically sloppy with turnovers and penalties. They were clearly the better team tonight. I wish we could go back and replay the second quarter. Take away all those penalties and turnovers and the 24 unanswered points and we win 24-14. But that's football. That's why you play four quarters.
Penn State played their hearts out. They could have given up when they trailed 31-7 at the half. We have a lot to be proud of, and a lot to look forward to next year. Ten years from now when I look back on this 2008 team I won't remember the Rose Bowl. I'll remember moments like these.

Thanks to the 2008 Big Ten Champion Penn State Nittany Lions.

I just hope...
one day soon we’ll be at their level. A few of our guys just got outplayed. But, its in the past at this point.
Its been a great season, and hopefully we are better next year.

I love this team.
I love what they meant to us after the Dark Years. They reignited PSU after the hellish years of 00-04. And as long as our current recruiting class sticks together, we’ll be back on top next season.

Dead to me, but with a smile.
I just went through my DVR and erased some PSU games and other stuff I’ve kept for too long, and I noticed there was a four-day period in which PSU beat Ohio State and the Phillies won the World Series.
Sports make me happy, and I’m not letting tonight ruin that for more than an hour or so.

Tough Loss
It’s a tough loss, but it’s hard to get really angry when you lose to a team that was favored, basically in their house, and has a rediculous amount of talent.

Now that the cheer is over...
WTF? I skim through the open thread, and no one says anything about the real reason for why we lost.
Graham Zug: zero catches for zero yards. They never even threw to him. They never gave him the chance to take the snap, throw the ball in the air, run under it, and then run in for a touchdown
I’m okay with a Rose Bowl loss, hell, we made it to the freaking Granddaddy of them all. But Zug would have destroyed SC. Shame on the coaches.

Thank you!
Penn State has a lot to be proud of. I was hoping the seniors would go out on a high note, but that isn’t the case. Unfortunately, I can’t complain too much, we were completely out played today. Sanchez and their WR shredded out zone D and I have to give them a lot of credit. I think that USC’s OLine needs a lot of credit too. The only pressure that Sanchez faced that he couldn’t handle was Maybin’s sack where he lined up about 3 years off sides.
Their Defense matched up with our offense pretty well, but our secondary didn’t do much to stop their passing game and when they figured that our after the first quarter it showed. I do have to say, I am a little disappointed that JoePa didn’t go down to the locker room to try to fire up the troops at the half. Sending a memo down to “Play Penn State Football” isn’t cutting it. I think his team deserved better than that.
All said and done, we have a lot to be thankful for. 11-2 is a hell of a record and I am proud of what the team has accomplished. Especially after the dark years in the beginning of the decade. Thank you seniors that believed/showed that Penn State belongs at the top and for representing the school that well love so much with Class. Today offically starts that long wait for Penn State football to return in the fall.
WE ARE.

Good loss, in a way
USC flat out beat PSU. 2nd quarter was just a classic whoopin’. USC had the momentum and capitalized repeatedly. There are no excuses here. When you are being outplayed, you gotta keep your opponent out of the end zone. PSU just did not limit the damage when they were down. If you watch or play soccer, you’ll know what I mean. When your opponent control possession, you have to keep them from popping in more than a goal.
What I liked is that PSU came out with the mentality that the game was 0-0 at halftime. No onside kicks, no scrubs, just playing straight up as if it was a new game. They played straight up and kept the score respectable. Watch Clark in the 2nd half and you’ll understand what I mean. He’s a gamer.

I still Love Penn State Football!!
We lost the game in one quarter. Take that quarter away and they game was ours. But we made the mistakes and we own up to them. I’m very proud of our boys and what they have accomplished this year.
No one thought we would be here. No one gave us a chance this season. No one thought we would beat Tosu. No one thought we’d beat Wisconsin. But we accomplished that and so much more!
Depsite the love fest the commentators had for USC all game, the PSU didn’t believe the game was over at the half and came back to play. We have so much to look forward to next season.
And…at least now I don’t have to root for Tosu in the Fiesta Bowl.

bad coaching/execution
Plain and simple. Missed tackles in the first quarter; terrible, conservative playcalling early in the game; abysmal penalties; fumbles; kicking a field goal down by several touchdowns in the red zone (unacceptable in every way) … this was a team that was simply not ready to play. And to top it all off, even if they were prepared, I think the secondary was so over-matched, Penn State still would have lost, even with better coaching/execution. A very, very disappointing loss. There are no excuses here at all, the better team won.
That said, I will miss this team like nobody’s business. The characters and the passion of these seniors was a beautiful thing to watch over the past four years. Better than my college years (96-00) and certainly better than the teams from 00-04. Despite this performance, this team will always hold a special place in my heart.

Non-conf schedule
I really think the second quarter happened because PSU just wasn’t accustomed to this level of competition. I truly believe that if we had another crack at them, we’d be fine. And I pin this mainly on the non-conf scheduling. Play a team like USC early in the year and there’d be no surprises today.
by JBusinger on Jan 1, 2009 10:07 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Agree...
All we kept hearing was Coastal Carolina, Syracuse, Temple, the list goes on even from years past. Sure the Big Ten schedule is tough, and by the way I would love to see an SEC/Big 12 team try and play Big Ten football week in and week out, but in order for us to become national title contenders we need to play more big games out of conference. Not only will it test our team for the bowl season, but it will put us on more of a national map with recruits. All you have to do is look at schools like FLA, USC, OKLA, TEX, OSU, etc and see the lists of 5 star recruits. How do you beat a USC? How do you win a national championship? Better faster players and high level of competition. I would rather see us lose a tough game early to a Texas or a USC than see us beat down a Kent State or a Youngstown State (see 2010 schedule). Yes I know Alabama is coming but those games are to few and to far between.

Carroll after the game
“With all due respect, those are two great programs, I don’t think anybody can beat the Trojans,” USC coach Pete Carroll said. “I just think we can beat anyone we played. That’s happened a lot to us late in the season. This is a terrific finishing program. There are so many things we can do. We’re just hard to beat right now.”
Hey Pete, why don’t you try not losing to a lesser team early in the season for once?? Then you can claim that no one can beat you. It was a great effort by both teams, but I just didn’t see Nittany Lion football in the 2nd quarter. Maybin’s offsides penalty hurt us big time. That would’ve given us great field position and wiped out a TD from USC.

Really thought we had a shot still at the end. Credit to SC for playing a solid game and taking advantage of every single mistake we made (that’s not meant to sound backhanded, honestly). I’m just glad the guys came out after halftime and played hard enough to make it somewhat close.

What's up with the slow starts?
Definitely a great season, but I haven’t seen too many people pondering the slow starts we have had in games this year. It seems like it always takes 1-2 quarters for our offense to settle in. I don’t really buy it all being “coaching adjustments”. I just wish our offense would have played better in the first half and our D stepping up on a few of those TD drives…
Oh well, I would rather win the Rose Bowl next year anyhow :)

It might be a positive
for someone like Daryl Clark to see exactly the distance between the Lions and an elite team like SC and use that as motivation to build for next year as the team leader. Clark was by far the best player in a white jersey today. You just can’t that many mistakes and expect to win.

Butler had a nice game too...
but unfortunately Clark and the offense could have a rough 09 season. All the seniors on the O-Line and the WRs will be missed. The defense should be awesome but it could be a long season for the offense.

Whoa Joe
Darryl can see, you can see and I can see. It’s the back seven that didn’t match up. Not our finest set of linebackers, and the typical good enough for the Big Ten corners and safeties. To cover for Rubin and Hull D line pressure is required, there was none today.
The Nittany Lion offense is good enough to play with USC, but the defense is not.

Just got back from the game...
tailgated with Rockin jtothep and a few others and had a great time until that 2nd qtr. I had great seats but had a few d-bag SC fans around me that pissed me off and it took awhile but me and the rest of the section finally got them to shut it for a while and act a bit classier.
My highlight of the game: somewhere in the 2nd qtr when I just simply couldn’t find a great deal to cheer for I started jumping up out of my seat and screaming like an idiot everytime ZUG checked into the game saying how ‘he can change the course of this game by himself.’ After explaining the joke to the few around me I eventually had a mini-section around me (about 20) all cheering for the kid and watching for him to check in. Some of the clueless Trojans were like ’ who in the hell is that guy?’ and it gave us some laughs. We had a pretty good time with it and I thought you guys would get a smile out of it.

For those in mourning...
Remember when a PSU team previously lead by Anthony Morelli actually started hanging 50+ points on helpless opponents?
Remember when a defense that lost Dan Conner and Sean Lee introduced us to the speed and ability of 2nd-stringers Navarro Bowman and Aaron Maybin?
Remember when we stomped on Michigan (after 9 agonizing seasons) and made Terrell “too country” Pryor cry?
Remember how a team that wasn’t even considered to be a Big 10 contender was just one missed field goal away from going to the National Championship game with an undefeated season?
Remember when a team lead by a once-in-a-lifetime senior class played their hearts out and scored 24 points on “the greatest defense of all time?”
I don’t know about you, but that’s what I’ll remember about this season.

I'm disappointed and disgusted, but not devestated.
I think, when it was all said and done, we proved we could play with them. Just like with basketball, we let them have one run in the second quarter and that was the end of it. Bradley needs to get rid of the damn Cover 3; it covers 0. Other than the 3rd quarter TD we gave up, I thought the game was lost when Green fumbled after ripping off a HUGE gain and then fumbling the ball. When USC scored after that to go up 31-7, that was the dagger that severed the jugular.
I’m just a little disappointed. I was telling a friend of mine right before kickoff that a win today would slam the door on 00-04, and have us back up with the elite teams. I’m not quite sure we’re at that level after this. We’re better than a middle of the pack Big Ten team, but we’re not quite a consistent Top 3 program. Yet. But we’re far, far, far better off than we were four years ago.
I am proud of the boys for not mailing it in. We did win the second half, and if it wouldn’t have been for a handful of plays (Green’s fumble, Maybin’s offside, Quarless falling down[Quarless sure seems to come up empty when it really counts, doesn’t he?]) we really could have had a shot. This graduating class definitely deserves a toast in their honor for restoring us to relevancy, for going 3-1 in bowl games, and never, never, never quitting. They are definitely what Penn State is all about. Hopefully, for those who have classes in the spring, they can work with the January enrolling recruits to teach them what being a Nittany Lion means.
I’m still holding out hope for a Top 10 finish. That would be just fine with me.

Great Season...Next year could be difficult
Anyone care to tell me which WRs will scare D-coordinaters next year? Odrick, Evans, Gaines, and Maybin could all be gone next year (hope not, but…)…
I was concerned about the departure of Tony Davis, Lydell Sargent, Scirotto and Rubin, but after tonight I’m not sure what the drop off is.
Adam Rittenberg had an interesting comment saying that the secondary’s issues were masked by a great front seven and a lack of credible QB play in the conference. Spot on.
I hate putting the jersey up for an off-season…worst time of the year.

Hey wen’t out after blocking for Clark’s TD run. The initial report was a tweaked knee — they were putting him in a brace at the time, but obviously he wasn’t up to playing ability at that point. Sad to say, down so many points, he wasn’t too huge of a factor, I think. If Stephon holds on to the ball, he’s not too bad of a replacement….

what a special feeling it was
to think long and hard about who’s jersey to buy, rocking my brand new white #22 jersey for the rose bowl, and seeing the dude get knocked out after 10 minutes, and then watching his replacement fumble the ball (and we all knew green was going to fumble at least once, don’t lie)
I think our defensive line is what lost the game, but losing our running game didn’t help either. One sack? Pathetic.

when we finally started blitzing
It looked like we started sending LaVarro but he was always a hair late or they got enough of him for Sanchez to get rid of it. Gotta give their O-line credit. They looked like they planned pretty well for us. Maybe Maybin will stick around another year to bulk up to avoid that kind of thing in the pros. Here’s to hoping..

It's not hard to pick up our blitzes, unfortunately.

Re; Quarless falling...
While I in no way am a Quarless fan, it appeared he got tangled with Norwood on that INT play. Not 100% sure though… he my have just dropped it if he got there anyhow.
I hated getting my hopes crushed, then getting my hopes back up when we were down only 14 with 4 minutes to play and the ball….
