Maurice Evans Also Leaving For Draft, Per National Football Post
Those dadgum sources:
"Sources close to the National Football Post have informed us that Penn State underclassmen Aaron Maybin and Maurice Evans intend to declare for the 2009 NFL Draft in the very near future."
Our friend from this morning's Nitt Picks projects Evans as a "mid-round selection", which, if true, makes it a questionable move.
There are other explanations of course, so count on Evans' decision to fuel a lot of the fires we've seen pop up over the past week or so.

Dumb move
His stock has to be next to zero after this past horrible season. But I’m not too surprised. He just didn’t seem interested this year. I watched him on key plays when the defense would get a turnover or a sack and he never celebrated with is teammates. It was like he was just going through the motions. I think this is more about wanting a fresh start than the money. He might be hoping to go in the later rounds so he can get a one year contract. Make an impression and then negotiate for that big deal in a year or two. By that plan he’ll still be a millionaire by the time he’s 25.

NFL
loves to tell these kids that they will be a first rounder or 2nd rounder and then watch them fall down the draft boards. teams love this because they can get a great player on the cheap once they fall out of the first round.
Dumb move on his part, but money talks. he has the talent to go pro, he just needed more time to develop/mature.

He was pretty upset with how he was treated here so I am not surprised.

Could be
It was just after the OTL piece and Baker and Taylor getting kicked off the team. He and Koroma were kind of the fall guys and had to work all year to get out of the dog house. That’s why I’m thinking this is him just wanting a fresh start.

He has no reason....
To be upset with the way he was treated. I knew this was coming about a month ago. Mo simply didn’t want to fulfill his responsibilities as a college student and Penn State expected that he did. He needs to grow up.

It'd be nice to add...
Lanford Collins to this recruiting class as well… Scout’s #42 DE, choosing from Boston College, Maryland, North Carolina, Penn State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia. You’d hope he’s really leaning towards us now that two of our DE underclassmen are leaving for the NFL. Not saying he’d get playing time as a true freshman, but he could certainly move up the ranks faster than would have been the case had Maybin and Evans stayed another year.

If he goes, he goes
The way he sandbagged it this season, I’ll actually be somewhat glad when he goes. If he really was playing at 70% because he felt poorly treated, he can go ahead and pack up his stuff. PSU is a good program; it doesn’t need players with attitudes like that. If he felt mistreated and angry, he should’ve sacked up and played hard. Nothing changes someone’s opinion of you like performing well.

What do you expect?
The writing is on the wall: LJ is leaving. His kids are going to take this opportunity to leave at the same time because they don’t want to play for someone new. They also don’t want to risk being caught up in the State College judicial system which is trying to make headlines instead of justice.
A little purging might be good for our program at this point.

At least we have the kind of guys that are draftable at this point. That should keep us out of the Dark Years Revisited.

Let's make the assumption
that his worst-case scenario is to get hurt next season and never play football again, then get a job selling cars or insurance making $50-$80K a year.
Even if he gets drafted in the fifth round and makes $150K for 1 year, he is still coming out way ahead in salary and in contacts. It’s sort of like a game show. You want to wait for the big prize and risk losing it all, or you want to take what you’ve earned and go home?
I think the extra year makes sense for QBs but pretty much nobody else, and I am an ever-declining fan of the pro game.

Draft Math
Well … there’s about 50 underclassmen being told they are first round talent (4 on PSU alone). You do the math!!!

Disappointing move on paper
But the reality is that so long as Penn State has had solid interior lineman play, its produced DEs like no other.
I assume the same will hold true for next year. If the interior is strong, the DEs we’ll free up and some guys we’ve only sparsely heard from will become impact players.
If Maurice wasn’t in it to win it, then good riddance.
Important thing to remember about the NFL…No one remembers a mid round draft choice. If you go high you get a fat signing bonus and GMs/coaches that have staked their reputation on being right about you. It buys you significantly more chances than it does being someone who went on the 2nd day. If you can improve your stock…you should always stay.

Hey Maurice...
The fifth round & $400,000 called. It’s waiting for you!
Hope you don’t spend it all on bling & cars. Needs to last the rest of your life, dude.

I'm disgusted
not by Mo’s choice but by how many people here are responding. It’s his choice first off. He has had trouble but smokin pot in college, well guilty as charged. If has dogging it, good he is gone now. You can always come back and get your degree, you can’t always go to the NFL. Even if he is drafted in the later rounds, again its his choice and he will live with it. The only reason why a PSU fan is mad about him or Mayhem leaing is because it may limit how good PSU is next season, which is selfish. I am in college right now and if someone offered me $200,000 to leave, I sure as shit would because I know money isn’t easy to come by. Blah Blah, I ramble too much, wish both of them the best of luck, rep PSU hard in the NFL.

Yeah but
If someone offered you $200,000 now or wait a year, get your degree, and possibly make $3 million, which would you take?

$3 million is a pipe dream, though.
I don’t think this is the catastrophic decision that people are making it out to be. Evans already destroyed everything he did in 2007. He was busted by the cops for the marijuana thing — major red flag for NFL teams, who aren’t going to spend an early draft pick on a guy who could be suspended for four games, then a full year, for that kind of bullshit.
Evans also has a long reel of 2008 tape where’s generally loafing and not giving a shit. His 2007 stats aren’t that impressive in context — of the 12.5 sacks, three of them came against the mighty triumverate of FIU, Buffalo, and Notre Dame. 3.5 against Indiana. Against Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio State? Zilch.
He’s undersized for an NFL defensive end and doesn’t have great speed. Nobody’s drafting him in the first three or four rounds of the 2010 draft, anyway, so why not leave early and try to get the second NFL contract a year earlier if things work out?

why on earth would we be reading this blog
if we didn’t want PSU to be a good team?
And, as Penn Staters we are programmed with the “get a degree; the rest will follow” mantra.
Look – we don’t go as far as Coach K – but we really do take some pride in our graduation rates.
