How do we keep LJ Sr?

Ok, so we all agree losing him would be bad.  Whether it's a disaster or a minor setback, it would suck.

Talking with some people, it seems the following plan would be not only good for Penn State football in general, but would also give LJ Sr. what he deserves in order to keep him around:

Make LJ Sr. Defensive Coordinator

Make Bradley Assistant Head Coach and still involved with defense

Bradley deserves a raise and a promotion for his work this season on the sideline, he was our Head Coach this season, and we went 11-2.  Joe didn't even make it to the locker room at some halftimes...  Succession plan or not, Bradley deserves the title and the money.

We need LJ Sr for recruiting, but more importantly we need him to take on a bigger role with this defense.  He's shown he has the ambition and talent to do big things elsewhere, and he should be rewarded for that.

Let's not forget the defense has let us down at times in the last few years, and Bradley may be better suited as a asst. HC role than DC -- because he's already doing that job.  Let him worry more about the gameplan, the big picture, and let LJ Sr. take over the defense.

In my opinion, this would be good for so many reasons.

Seems to me a logical decision

I’ve come to the exact same conclusion. I just don’t know if Paterno and/or the AD office and/or Spanier would agree with it.

From what I hear

Joe has told Zook he is going to do everything he can to keep LJSR. Zook is prepared to pay whatever it takes to get him, but this isn’t really about money. It’s about LJSR wanting to advance his career and one day becoming a Div IA head football coach. That’s the career path he has set for himself. So I think Joe is going to have to promote him and give him more responsibility if he wants to keep him.

Are you sure he wants to be HC?

He’s gotta be in his upper 50s and there have always been rumors that he wants to devote more time to his family and church. Maybe he’s just “shopping around” to get a little more $$ or security from PSU.

That's just what I'm hearing

Guesses are he’s around 57 years old. So if he wants to be a head coach his window of opportunity is getting smaller.

Or if he's like Joe...

LJ has about 25 or more good years of coaching left in him!

by NJ lion on Jan 14, 2009 3:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sounds like it comes down to . . .

Why wouldn’t Joe want to do that (promote him)? I could be way off base, but I really think that what the AD office and/or Spanier agrees or doesn’t agree to doesn’t mean d**k. Yeah, they control the purse strings, but they have to know that they’re getting a bargain when it comes to the football program. They want to keep the program relevant and part of making sure that happens would involve NOT having to replace a valuable team member like LJSr.

The only thing is you can’t make an LJSr promotion happen w/o a TB promotion. The post about Asst. HC makes a lot of sense. The question then becomes what does Joe think about that? And does it just delay the inevitable of LJSr leaving to become HC somewhere else. Especially if any reality of there being an Asst. HC Bradley makes it that much more evident that he (LJSr) is not the heir apparent.

At this point, I just wish we could get the suspense over with and find out if he’s staying or leaving.

Let him go

If LJSr doesn’t become HC when JoePa leaves (TB is obvious choice) we will need to start over with that position in 1-3 years anway. So be proactice, find a young dline coach that will hussle and work and in 3 years, we won’t have lost any recruiting ground because this new coach will have been in place and developed a realtionship with the 2009 HS Sophomores. It makes sense. Zooker is throwing crazy money out there, money that we aren’t going to be able to match with out bumping up TB.

Maybe he plans on announcing after signing day…that would be the nice thing to do. Have our class signed up and then leave for Zook.

Signing day

I don’t think Zook will wait that long. He has to sure up his coaching staff in order to save his own recruiting class. He has other guys he’ll go to if LJSR turns him down or wants to think about it.

By NCAA rules, coaches can start traveling for in house visits starting this Saturday. My guess is LJSR has until Friday to give Zook an answer.

by BSD on Jan 14, 2009 11:28 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Why do you need to become a coordinator?

In the NFL there are a number of examples where position coaches have made the leap directly to head coach. It isnt as common as hiring a coordinator, but it still does happen, examples include Andy Reid, Harbaugh with the Ravens (special teams coach with the eagles), and the new coach in Miami (O line coach in Dallas I think).

Why is it assumed then that LJSR needs to become a defensive coordinator in order to later become a head coach, head coaches are hired based on personality as much as anything else, and if he has that personality than a promotion to coordinator is unnecessary.

Maybe he just wants to be closer to Larry JR in Kansas City so that he can more easily bail him out of jail.

by JoePaPa on Jan 14, 2009 11:32 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Well let me clarify the way I see things

LJ Sr (in all reality) doesn’t believe he’s going to jump TB for HC of PSU. TB’s been on the staff for 30 years. He’s worked his way up and earned every promotion. Likewise he’s earned this hypothetical promotion. It is possible, but it isn’t likely.

LJ Sr. simply wants to step into the spotlight, as a young and super-talented DC on a defense-oriented top-tier team.

Let’s probably also assume, that LJ Sr. could easily have his sights on the NFL. He could go from NCAA DC to an NFL job quite easily. He could bounce from NFL back to a D-1A HC spot just as easily after that.

This whole thing isn’t about the next HC of Penn State. That’s too far off, and too speculative. This whole post was about securing LJ Sr. and improving our program in the most simple and natural way for the next 3 years: promote the two brightest stars under Joe Paterno. Only then can these guys expect anything to happen in 3 years anyway — it shows ambition, gives them more responsibility, and allows them to take advantage of the success of PSU.

Scrap sucks.....

Bottem line…..his defenses cost PSU games…..big games! You don’t promote someone strictly on loyalty. I don’t care how long he has been at PSU he should not be the next head coach. The Michigan St. debacle last year cost us a 10 win season. The USC scheme made us look like chumps and put the game out of reach. Bradley’s major problem is that he can not react to changes implemented by the other side. USC is a perfect example…..first quarter even game……second quarter……change up by Carroll and staff equals defensive meltdown for PSU! Same thing with MSU last year. How the F does a PSU defense give up a 21 pt. lead? LJSr. is an indispensable part to the lion success for a good number of years now. He is also, hands down, the best recruiter on the staff. If JoePa figures out a way to keep him in the fold….you have to give the old man a lot of credit. Unfortunately though the offer put forth by Zooker may be too good. Keeping LJSr. should be priority one……but evaluating potential cadidates should also begin to prepare for the possibility of him leaving.

I don’t know if I’d say “Scrap sucks”, but I agree about the inability to adapt during the game.
During the Rose Bowl, my kids kept saying “why is Penn State letting USC catch the ball?” If it was so obvious to 11 and 9 year olds, why couldn’t the coaches see it and CHANGE?

There’s been alot of talk about TB becoming head coach, but I’m starting to think maybe that’s not the best choice, just an easy one. (But that’s a whole nother discussion for another post.)

by NJ lion on Jan 14, 2009 2:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Completely disagree....

99% of the time Bradley adapts very well during a game….

…for example…see scUM and Illinois this year….in the first quarter we were getting gashed and then nothing for the rest of the game…

…I don’t care if you had the Steelers defense against Sanchez in the Rose Bowl, he was going to have a great day. He was just in a zone (no pun intended) that game.

WE ARE.......PENN STATE!

by Nick7 on Jan 14, 2009 3:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You’re right – I guess I’m still upset over our 4th quarter Iowa meltdown and 2nd quarter USC disaster.
Regardless, I used to be in the TB for HC camp, but now with LJ most likely leaving, I’m starting to think that a shake-up, fresh air, new blood, etc might not be so bad at Penn State.

And maybe the Steelers D couldn’t stop USC, but the Eagles could!!!
j/k

by NJ lion on Jan 14, 2009 4:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah but..

Don’t forget scUM changed QB’s at the half due to injury. And Illinois got DWill’d on a return and lost the momentum. Bradley did well those games, but it wasn’t all him.

by millzners on Jan 14, 2009 5:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

SCUM and the fighting Zooks

were in the bottem of the league and I don’t think Bradley changed those games. PSU came out tentative against Michigan but recovered after they realized they were the superior team. There is no way IL should have scored as much as they did on our defense! I am fed up with Bradley…..his weak zones……..and his bend don’t break mentality. His philosophy costs us games….Bottem Line! And I am with NJ lion…. E-A-G-L-E-S!

Back to the lions…..I would have rather we lost to USC playing aggressive like the Buckeyes did against Texas. I give the Trojans their props…….but their victory was not because of far suprerior athletes. Coaches need to put their troops in a position to win….PSU failed to do that!

I thought only safeties played 15 yards off the ball?

by pic15 on Jan 14, 2009 11:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Credit goes both ways

You can’t give him all the blame when they do poorly and no credit when they do well. Some days schemes just don’t work, and players just have bad games. You either praise both of them when they both do well, and criticize both of them when they both do poorly, or…..say nothing at all. Because it then becomes an invalid argument

by MrBrianPSU on Jan 15, 2009 9:40 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You aren't reading everything I am saying

Bradley’s defensive schemes may be fine at the start of the game….but adjustments are always made….some on the sidelines……some at the half. My criticism of Bradley is his failure to adjust PSU’s defense to the adjustments made by our opponents; that and I can’t stand our corners playing so far off the damn ball!

He's gone.

It’s by no means a bad plan, but I really don’t see any chance of keeping LJSr at this point. He’s been offered a much better position at Illinois, and any offer Penn State makes is clearly reactionary to that. LJSr’s kids have gone through the program, moved out of town, and there’s just not a ton of reason for him to stay at this point aside from a pure loyalty standpoint. Plus, I think it would be wrong to throw Bradley to the side and “create” a new position for him… I’m sure Fran Ganter just loves being the director of football operations.

If he wants to be a head coach, he has a much better chance at Illinois as opposed to Penn State. I would imagine Zook’s job security is rapidly declining, especially after this year’s record. If a head coach is what he wants, he’s positioning himself in the right place for succession.

Yes, he’s a great recruiter, and great at developing linemen. Let’s see him have the opportunity to be a DC out there. The bottom line is it hurts to let him go from a recruiting standpoint, but there’s a lot of great coaches out there ready to take his place. I don’t see this as the-sky-is-falling apocalypse that some people are making it out to be.

Millzners 1st Post...

I’m for it…have read / heard & discussed that analogy by others as well.

Karma: in the end, does the PSU Nation actually ‘thank’ Zook for making/(forcing) PSU into shoring-up our future coaching lineage? My gut feeling: he stays and the dividens are plenty!!!

How do you keep LJ? Might as well add Vandy too.

Joe gives up $175K of his compensation and gives LJ $75K, Vandy $75K and Scrap $25K more while naming all of them Assistant Head Coaches. Puts more money in their pockets and keeps all 3 from looking around in anticipation of being named the next HC 3 years from now.

The longer this drags out....

the better it is for PSU IMO. I think the longer it drags out, that gives me hope that PSU is working on keeping him with some sort of package, raise, or promotion. He could have accepted the job yesterday if I’m correct but he hasn’t yet. With each day the odds go in PSU’s favor.

I’ve been participating in a group fasting at church for 4 days now and I’ve been praying about different things here and there. I’m sure the Good Lord won’t mind if I include a little prayer for LJ Sr!
