Odrick and Bowman
We obviously know that Maybin and Evans are gone... has anyone else heard news on Odrick and Bowman (since today is the deadline)? I honestly think these guys decisions hinge on LJSR's decision to goto Illinois or not, but that's me.
These guys could be first rounders in the '10 draft... this year, I don't think they go above early third round... but, seeing that Evans went and he is seen to be a mid-rounder, who knows what will happen.

Doubt it
I don’t even think Bowman sent in a draft evaluation request and there has been zero smoke on Odrick.
I'm crossing my fingers as hard as I can
I’m fine with Evans and Maybin leaving, we need Bowman and Odrick to round out this defense.
This defense is screwed either way!
There is no Evans, Maybin, Scirrotto, Sargeant, Gaines, Sales, Davis, Rubin, Lucian…also Lee and Hayes are coming off major injuries.
get real
the same thing was said about this season’s defense, and we were the best in the b10. we’ll be even better next season
Who said that about this year. I think the secondary was all seniors and the DL was supposed to be amazing just thin. The LBs were supposed to struggle and they didnt impress too much (cept Bowman).

Just because the secondary was filled with seniors
didn’t mean we were expecting the world out of them. Scirrotto was the only one returning to his position (Davis was returning from an injury-plagued junior, moving from safety back to CB). On the other side, nobody knew how good Wallace (or Sargeant) were going to be, and there were tons of doubts about Rubin as a starter.
While we’re at it, nobody knew Mabyin was going to have such a great season (let alone become a starter) that he’d be making the jump to the NFL; Bowman had to fight for his starting time at the beginning of the season. If there was any reason to believe that this defense wouldn’t have suffered with the losses and uncertainty at a number of positions, it’s because we know we have a history of talent and coaching that makes it possible year in and year out.
As soon as Lee went down pure panic spread like wildfire, then Baker and Taylor were let go, and basically it was the end of the world. We had an untested secondary, a thin Dline, and an untested LB core.
Next season we’ll have another untested secondary, a great LB core (if bowman sticks), and a good if not great D-line.
Listen, I agree that people were very nervous but we still knew a couple things.
We knew we had a great D-line but thought it was thin. To this day, I think it was. How was it not? It was great but didnt have as many guys as originally planned for.
Whether Davis was switching positions or not, no one was nervous about him! Come on! He was to be a three year starter!!! And as far as Wallace or Sargeant goes, no one was too nervous about them. They were proven as well. One of them was always in on nickel or dime coverage. Rubin, yes…that was nerv racking and I think it continued to be at least early on in the season.
And the backers, they were weak last year but will be strong next year. No argument here.
Yeah Man...
have some faith…

FAITH! About what…name the starters by position for me and tell me the positives…

LB’s will probably Mauti/Stupar, Bowman, and Lee. Mix in a little Colisanti and Gbadyu. This will be the best LB core in the conference next season.
Line will probably start Koroma/Still, Odrick, Crawford, and Hayes. They will be one of the deepest D-lines in the country and if Hayes or Crawford steps up at DE we’ll be the top line in the conference.
Secondary will start AJ Wallace, Lynn, Astorino and Hodges. They will be talented but untested, and our biggest concern going into next season.
That secondary you named
One senior, two sophomores, and one freshman. Not a lot of experience so you can expect some blown coverages, but way more athletic than Sarg, Davis, Scirrotto, and Rubin. They’ll be pretty good by the end of 2010 and absolutely killer in 2011 and 2012.

You forgot about Yanich and Zordich
they should take the best athlete of the bunch and put him at Hero…and mix in a 3-4
Hull?
I thought he had another year of eligibility. If so, it’ll probably be Bowman, Hull and Lee.
Hull will not play over the young guys, they were freshman this year...only reason for limited playing time
But he's a senior
PSU favors upperclassmen, regardless of talent level. The original post didn’t mention Hull at all, but had everyone else in the rotation. Hull will be in the rotation, that’s for sure.
I guess I trying to forget him. He’s a great kid, and a great story as a walk-on. But does he have the talent to start over Lee or Bowman or Mauti/Stupar? No. Hopefully he’ll be situational.
And for the record, Stupar is going to be an animal — I’m not sure what position, but his special teams play this season were awesome.
you forgot someone in the LB rotation
Fera (once JoePa converts him, that is)

So, we got a lot of talent at LB
Lee, Boman, Bani, Mauti, Stupar, Zordich, Yanich, Colesanti.
The question is, which of these guys can be placed in a position of need? Hero, Full Back, DE?
add Andrew Dailey...
and perhaps, maybe Jelani Jenkins.
It sure would be nice to have a 6’3" 235lb pile driver at safety like USC had in Taylor Mays. Except our guy would spear you with helmut first hits.

I think you meant "wouldn't"
at least I hope you did :-p

I guess subconsciously I
must want our guys adding to th death toll, but my wirelss keyboard cuts out everyonce in awhile.

Settle down
I think he’s just saying we have to let things play out a bit. Nobody thought Navorro Bowman and Aaron Maybin would come out of nowhere in 2008 and become All Americans. There may be talent on this team we haven’t seen yet. Let the spring play out and let’s not jump off the ledge just yet.

Actually
I’m looking forward to some competition in the secondary. We pretty much blew one play per game for a big touchdown this past year. Scirrotto and Rubin were good, but not very athletic. I think they were a large part of the reason why we’ve been sitting in cover-3 for two years now.
I’m interested to see what guys like Lynn, Jefferies, Sukay, and Hodges can do. It may end up being a case of addition by subtraction like our quarterback situation was this year.

Sukay...
I thought a “name” was missing in millzners earlier post…he’s the one. I have a feeling he has similar “natural” talent like Astorino…
