Would the ACC have been better for PSU Football?
I understand that there's certain academic benefits by being in the Big Ten but I thought we could examine the sports benefits. I believe that the ACC would have been a better fit for PSU than the Big East or the Big Ten. Here's my reason:
1. The Big Ten and Big East programs are all in the Northern Rustbelt region. The populations of each state where these programs are located are decreasing. Thus, the recruiting opportunities are decreasing. If PSU was in the ACC it would open up the VA/NC/SC/GA region for PSU recruiting. We already have a good connection to MD and this would only increase that presence.
2. Perception. We would be playing against Southern teams and it would garner more respect for PSU sports in the media because we'd be playing more Southern teams like Miami, FSU, Clemson, GA Tech, and UNC.
3. Weather factor. We'd be playing some of our games in the fairer weather of the Southeast and that would be more appealing to recruits. It would also possibly help us with preparation for the bowls which are played in the South. We wouldn't be locked into Northern games in the cold from September to November.
4. Third Wheel. The Big Ten loves Michigan and Ohio State and doesn't have room for another top program. I think our program has suffered in all aspects because we're on the outside looking in. When we're up the conference is down. When we're down and Michigan and OSU are up, the conference is up.
*This is just football. I think our football program and basketball program would benefit as well by having the chance to play in a stronger conference for each sport.

Well, the problem here
is that the ACC isn’t really regarded as a good football conference, either, and certainly no better than the Big 10. Just because they have some southern teams doesn’t mean they get the “OMG ESS EEE CEE SPEED!!!” treatment that the SEC gets.
The biggest benefits, of course, would be that we’d have recruiting pipelines in Florida, then, and we’d also be able to play a few games down south in the winter (ever wonder why the Big East has South Florida, with rumors if bringing in Central Florida? You could lure in recruits with promises of playing down south every year)
If we did join the ACC, though, we’d still be “the third wheel” behind their established programs. Granted, we’d walk all over their top teams and soon assert our continued dominance, so that issue would probably go away quickly ;-)
Finally, the Big Ten and Big East featuring Rust Belt schools….um…where exactly do you think PSU is located? That alone makes us a good geographical/socioeconomic fit with the Big 10.

That’s my point. In the Big Ten our recruiting region and our audience viewership is locked into the Rustbelt(also PA). If we were in the ACC our viewership would extend to the Southern states and Florida. The increased visibility would help us open doors in the states where recruiting is growing because the population is growing.
I dunno
I’m not sure I buy into the idea of a “recruiting pipeline” to the Carolinas and Florida if we were in the ACC. Boston College is in the ACC. How much recruiting do they do down south? And I’m not sure you can convince a kid that playing half of your games in warm weather is such a plus when they would have to live in the cold the rest of the winter. Southern people hate snow. Absolutely hate it with a passion. It’s tough to get them to move up north. Especially when there are plenty of other options in the south.

Here is the other thing
As much as some people complain about how the Big Ten is over-exposed, it’s not that great, blah, blah, it’s still the Big Ten.
It’s a longstanding, blue blood traditional power confrence. There are really only two, the Big Ten and the SEC. The rest (with the exception of the Pac 10) a goofy convenience marriages and/or don’t make a ton of sense (Big XII excluded).
The Big Ten is better than the ACC. It just is, and more than likely it always will be.

I Like Being in the Big 10...
But the Big East is really where we probably belong. If we were in the Big East, we would be the dominant power. We could have maintained our traditional rivalries, especially with Pitt. Not having a true rival really hurts us, and I agree with the third wheel comment above.
If JoePa would have coached the last 15 years in the Big East, he would be way ahead of Bowden and the dark years may have been just mediocre years. The Big East still has the tie-in with the BCS, and I would be willing to bet an undefeated Big East team would play for the national title in all but pretty extrodinary circumstances.
I also believe that if we had been in the Big East, we would have scheduled more interesting intersectional games – feeling the need to beef up our schedule. Just a thought.

My understanding was that the advantages for the sports other than football....
were the primary reasons for joining the Big Ten.

Big Ten is where Penn State belongs
From an academic standpoint, Penn State is much better off aligning with the Big 10. All the Big Ten schools have a tradition of performance on and off the field. And there have been a number of research and educational collaborations established because of our membership in the Big 10.

Classic. I guess when Bowden was laying waste to the all powerful ACC those were much more legitimate than PSU winning games in the Big 10.

Real nice
Do you have something against replies in Spanish?
Because I didn’t see anywhere that the comment section was closed at 2 pm!
And where was this “unnecessary piling on” flag and picture when we were discussing Laura Nitis’s stats??
After further review
The previous personal foul stands. NJ lion will be penalized 15 yards for piling on.

If I were Laura Nitis...
I’d get credit for piling on and then win all sorts of awards.
Instead I’m just some regular non-award winning schmo.
Hey, I'd like to be in the ACC!
If I had the power, I’d make it happen tomorrow. To me, it would be a hell of a lot more interesting to play teams like BC, Miami, FSU, UNC, VT, UVa, Georgia Tech, and Miami. And the road trips would be a hell of a lot more fun.
Of course, we’d get slaughtered in basketball, but how would that be any different?

Given that I live in MA ...
having Penn State come up here every other year to play BC would be convenient
