For Penn State fans, there's a name of interest that seems to be missing from this list. And this one. And this one. You know, between "Vontae Davis" and "Josh Freeman".

The BSD Three have been engaged in a little email conversation about this topic, and Kevin points toward the L.J. Sr. interview by Jeff McLane as evidence that Evans is gone.

UPDATE: Eric Thomas from Read Between the Lions confirms that Evans is going pro.

Half Baked is a full 90 minutes of weed jokes.

That movie came out 10 years ago and it’s still hilarious.

LJ is the key for PSU recruiting.

RUTS and I witnessed him work the room in the recruiting lounge, he was the man.

I hope Jay gets promoted to OC and let him call all the plays. I am pretty sure the when Joe steps down it will be LJ, then in a few years Jay.

TB should go elsewhere to get a HC gig.

Mother of God, Jay as OC?!?! Please tell me you’re kidding.

Who ran the offense this year?

Tell me…who was it?

Joe Paterno? Galen Hall? I doubt it.

Jay did a nice job this year. Deal with it.

Did you miss '08?

You can beat up Jay all you want for not being Joe, but did you already forget that we had a top ranked offense in 2008?

  1. in total yards, #11 in points.

Listen, we don’t have a USC-esque passing attack, but when we run the spread offense with the right QB (Robinson, Clark, hopefully Newsome & Jones), we put a pretty freaking good offense on the field. GIve credit to whoever you want besides Jay, but at some point you’ll man up and realize our offense isn’t a problem these days.

by Tailgate Shogun on Jan 16, 2009 10:55 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Er...

14 in total yards. Formatting error. But you get the point.

by Tailgate Shogun on Jan 16, 2009 10:56 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, you absolutely have to give Jay credit.

Can’t blame Jay for the crappy offenses and then give someone else credit for the good years. Same with Joe. Same with everyone.

If you want to place blame on Jay and Joe for leaving Anthony Morelli in the lineup last year, great. But they deserve credit for making the right choice this year, as well.

Agreed

You have to give Jay some credit for this year.

by BSD on Jan 16, 2009 11:30 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nevertheless...

I’d feel a hell of a lot more comfortable with the notion of JayPa as head coach if he were to go somewhere else and prove himself capable of running a program first. I don’t doubt that he’s good at what he does, but my question remains ‘what exactly is the scope of his control?’. It’s not even so much that I doubt his ability to exercise control, but that I can already hear the naysayers crowing about how he only got the job because of his last name and calling for his immediate ouster as soon as we lose a game.

Different story

I think we all agree that Jay Paterno, at this point in his career, would be a bad choice for the next head coach.

by BSD on Jan 16, 2009 12:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Umm....

Sweep’s initial comment that started this whole discussion was that LJ could be the HC for a few years, followed by JayPa. Perhaps I was inordinately dwelling on that point, but that’s what prompted my response.

in those years a lot can happen

either Jay will suck it up and not be qualified for being a HC, or he could really start shining as an OC and earn the job outright.

What I heard

On here, of course, was that Joe supposedly wanted to pull Blank Stare and Jay talked him out of it. Then Joe, again; supposedly, turned the story around to make Jay look better.

If I’m hopelessly wrong, feel free to correct me.

Beanie..

I loved scrolling down the list and finding Chris “Beanie” Wells on the list, written that way. Are you kidding me?? Does the love affair never die? Is it neccessary to list him officially AND include “Beanie” come on…I have never seen the quotations used so often for a player in my life. Aaron “Project” Maybin, Derrick “D-Will” Williams, I say we insist on using quotations for every player ever listed, what is this Chris Berman hour?

by pmm156 on Jan 16, 2009 12:08 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Same gripe with Pacman

Despite his continued run-ins with the law, people still insist on referring to him officially as Adam “Pacman” Jones, often completely forgoing the use of Adam.

I don’t think they use the quotations as a manner of elevating the player above his peers and making him stand out, I just think it’s lazy writing. These guys get referred to by their nicknames on TV, in the press, and everywhere and eventually it gets absorbed into common knowledge, even more so than their actual names. So the writers just continue doing it.

Luring recruits with my new "Posting HD" scheme since '08.

in their defense

if you see an article written about “Adam Jones” you probably won’t immediately think of the right guy. Calling him Adam “Pacman” Jones, or just “Pacman Jones” let’s you instantly know who and what the article is about. That’s the thing when people are better known by their nicknames, and especially when their nicknames aren’t derivatives of their real names.

Example: If I started talking about James Carter (or James Earl Carter Jr), most likely you wouldn’t immediately think I was talking about our 39th president. Calling him “Jimmy Carter” immediately makes that connection.

Giving Jay Credit? How about Galen too.

I have given him nothing BUT credit this season. Galen and Jay put together an offense that rivaled 1994. As a QB coach, Clark was fantastic — and he was pass-first, something no one expected.

But having a good season does not automatically prove Jay deserves the OC job. You cannot simply throw out the 10 seasons of mediocre QB play and wretched offensive performances. You cannot tell me that Clark didn’t deserve to take the field at least half-way through last season — and that Jay wasn’t in a position to make that decision. How many games could we have won with Clark splitting snaps, or coming in to relieve a confused and ineffective Morelli. Look at the Alamo Bowl as an example of how effective that would have been (down 14 and Clark helps ignite a comeback).

Finally, you shouldn’t give Jay the credit from a good season, not give Galen any, and then throw out all the bad seasons and declare Jay should be the OC. Galen had as much to do with this season as Jay, and likewise the bad seasons too.

This next 3 seasons will define Jay Paterno — he’s finally gotten the monkey off of his back with this season, and he’s created an offense that has an identity. He knows the type of QB that fits the system, and we’re recruiting those kids well. I hope he succeeds, I think Clark will be incredible next season, and I think Spread HD is here to stay.

Jay

I think you can throw out everything before 2005. It wasn’t until 2004 when we brought in Galen Hall that we made the commitment to the spread offense. Galen’s job was to teach it to Jay. It took a few years to get the personnel we needed (an athletic quarterback instead of a pocket passer) and now we’re seeing the benefits. While there was a point and time where I would agree that JayPa was a total failure, the offense has evolved and now I don’t think anyone can complain with the product. In this day and age of “What have you done for me lately”, Jay deserves the benefit of the doubt for now.

2007 and Clark
How many games could we have won with Clark splitting snaps, or coming in to relieve a confused and ineffective Morelli. Last year, which one do think Clark is the difference in? At Illinois and Michigan in September? Ohio State, who we’d have lost to with Todd Blackledge as our quarterback? The Michigan State game we blew a 17 point lead in?

Look at the Alamo Bowl as an example of how effective that would have been (down 14 and Clark helps ignite a comeback). Uhh, 14 point comback ignited by Anthony Morelli TD pass, a fourth down audible and a recovered fumble. Clark played well, and was a wrinkle that Texas A&M wasn’t prepared for, but that’s it.

Michigan for sure. Morelli was stinking up the place (again), and splitting snaps with Clark to give Michigan a zone-read run would likely have made the difference in a close game. They lost to App State and Oregon because of that same play, and we obviously could have and should have tried it with Clark. Everyone knew that play was the achilles heel for Michigan, but we didn’t even try it despite having the personel to do so.

Not so sure

You think Clark is Amanti Edwards or Dennis Dixon. I sure don’t. That exact same Michigan team beat Florida who also has a spread option quaterback of some reputation, albeit not quite as fast as Edwards and Dixon.

Also, Clark doesn’t run all that much, the 13 games he played this year demonstrated that pretty clearly.

While this is all academic

and I won’t get dragged into a long argument about it, I don’t think Clark would have missed Butler when he was open on the slant in the end zone, and I don’t think he loses to Illinois.

"They haven't played us yet."

by ReadingRambler on Jan 16, 2009 1:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I believe that if you give Clark the ball, and ask him to do something — he’ll get it done and then some. At Notre Dame he was simply asked to go in and play garbage time — he went down the field and got a TD. At Wisky the following year, he was sent in for mop-up duty — he went down the field and got a TD. During the Alamo Bowl he was sent in to help ignite the offense when we were losing and had not had a comeback since 2005 — he went down the field and got a TD. So yes, I believe if we had sent him in to win those 2007 games, he would have.

Clark isn’t Amanti Edwards or Dennis Dixon, truthfully, I believe he’s far superior to either of those players.

Regardless, I think we should just agree to disagree.

Amanti Edwards or Dennis Dixon

My point is that those guys were both fast as hell run first quarterbacks, Daryl Clark is not. Tim Tebow is also a running quarterback, but he is not fast as hell, and Michigan handled him pretty well.

The point being I think that the speed that App State and Oregon had was much more Michigan’s problem than simply the spread. They beat Illinois too, also a spread team.

One other thing before I let it drop, you can’t just magically become a spread team in the third quarter of a game that isn’t going your way anymore than you can become a wishbone team under the same circumstances.

actually yeah

I’d say Clark definitely could have been the difference in the Illinois game for sure, probably could have helped us more in the Michigan game, but maybe not a win. Michigan State it is hard to tell. Morelli definitely had a really bad final drive, but I think a lot of that was just poor playcalling (compounded by poor play execution. I still can’t believe that 4th down pass of his. UGH).

If he's not on the NFL's list...

then he either: (a) must have missed the deadline (for some reason), or (b) isn’t interested in playing in the NFL next season. Right? Of course, this doesn’t mean he’s staying at Penn State. He could easily transfer. But why would he? If he stays at Penn State, he starts… and with the killer DTs and LBs on our roster, he’ll have the opportunity to record about 1,000 sacks. Heck, he can put himself in a position to be a top five draft pick next year.

This whole thing makes no sense.

Well...

there we have it. It baffles me as much as it does Eric Thomas, but it is what it is. It looks like Crawford, Hayes, Latimore, and Lathom in 2009 (unless Sean Stanley turns out to be a monster and sees time as a true freshman). Sure hope Crawford continues to progress at an amazing rate and that Hayes comes back from injury with a vengeance. The upside, as I mentioned, is that they’ll have incredible DTs and LBs to sustain them as they get used to their roles.
