PSU Lands OL John Urschel
The great recruiting weekend has continued, as FightonState reports that OL John Urschel has committed to Penn State.
Urschel is a 2-star recruit, per Scout.com, but also held an offer from Boston College, and Stanford had expressed interest in the 6'3, 260 pound lineman.
No offense to Urschel, but this is the kind of recruit that I really wonder why we went after. We don't have too much need for another o-line recruit, especially a two-star guy at that. I know, star rankings aren't everything, but when a Justin Brown expresses concern that we might not have a spot for him, you start to wonder.
Still, a 3rd commit in as two days is pretty sweet, and here's to hoping Jelani and Justin join the club.

Star system blows. I have more faith in the staff. Hell if BC was also looking at him, he can't suck
OL is the hardest position to project, I went to school w/ 5 star OL/Big 33/etc that went to PSU.
He was 6’7, 300ish, and recruited by EVERYONE…was a flop, never had his heart in it. All the physical tools, great guy, just didn’t want to put in the work I guess.

Newsome, Fera, Hodges and Howle, I think, enrolled early. So they all count towards last year’s total. That would mean 21 scholarships will count towards this year. Four scholies should remain. That means Jenkins and Brown would have a home if they so choose.
Another future Penn State Academic All-American?
“Urschel is also a standout in the classroom, as he boasts a 94 GPA and scored a 2190 on the SAT. He has received acceptance packages from Princeton and Cornell.”
94 GPA?
a 94 GPA eh? Well, he won’t be getting a 94 GPA at Penn State, that much I know.

I think I knew some poeple with a 0.94 GPA
Needless to say, they weren’t named Academic All-Americans.

That's an exclusive group called the Square Club...
I knew several myself.

depends where he came from. I went to High school in central Pa and many of the districts there use the 100 pt GPA, where an A is 100-93, B 92-86, and so on.
Wow, never heard of a 100 point GPA scale.
Certainly makes sense.

Yep
My high school graded on the 100 point GPA scale. 95+ was an A average. 85-94 was a B. 75-84 was a C. 65-74 was a D, and under 65 was an F.

There's room
You can never have too many linemen. And you gotta figure a few of the guys will switch to the opposite side of the ball as needed. In the 2006 class that had Maybin, Evans, Odrick and so on, there were like 10 DL players that year. Now there’s only a handful of those guys left because of dismissals and early entry to the draft.
I could see Brown being concerned about the number of WR prospects coming in. But he’d be the marquee name among the bunch. If he doesn’t think he can win a starting job, it’s best he go to a program with less potential depth. Right now we need an army of WR, DB and line prospects. Players should see an opportunity to compete to play early.
Huh?
Move him to Hero? He already is one.

I heard the staff is renaming the position for next
year to Superhero in hopes that Zug will give his approval.

Word on the street
is that Justin Brown silent verballed yesterday… look for a press conference a la K. Newsome in the next few weeks folks.
Silent verbal
I’ll give you another term for a “silent verbal”: not committed. No offense to Brown, whom I certainly hope ends up at PSU, but until it’s made public it’s not really much of a committment. We’ve all heard plenty of stories about “silent verbals” who apparently must have made such non public committments to multiple schools.
They say when you loose one sense...
others are sharpened… lets hope it was either his speed or his hands.
Don't shake the etch-a-sketch
I spoke with Nittany Lion head coach Joe Paterno last night and he confirmed that Justin Brown also gave an unwritten written committment yesterday as well.
A pretty good day for the Lions as they wrapped up Brown with both a silent verbal and unwritten written committment.

See, I'm not blowing smoke folks.
NOTES: Penn State received two more commitments for its 2009 class, and one for its 2010 class. The 2009 commitments are New Jersey wideout/defensive back Shawney Kersey and two-way lineman John Urschel from New York. Kersey pledged to the program Friday, according to a report in the Gloucester County Times. Kersey, a 6-2, 175-pounder, was originally a Rutgers recruit, but had a change of heart. Urschel (6-3, 275) made his announcement Saturday. Coming in for the 2010 season is Sto-Rox quarterback Paul Jones (6-3, 215), a classic dropback passer who is considered the top QB get in the state for next season. … In addition, PSU is supposed to receive another 2009 verbal Monday from Delaware wide receiver Justin Brown. … Another PSU recruit, West Scranton offensive lineman Eric Shrive, will not play in the Big 33 game, according to the Scranton Times. Shrive was picked to the team last week. A replacement has not been announced.
