Nittany Lion of the Week - Jamelle Cornley
This week's Nittany Lion of the week is Jamelle Cornley for leading Penn State to a win over the Indiana Hoosiers and a near upset of #7 ranked Michigan State.
Against Michigan State Cornley played all 40 mintues and had a career high 26 points. 15 of those points came in the second half as Penn State mounted a furious charge from 17 points down that came up just short. He also pulled down four rebounds and registered two assists. Unfortunately Penn State came up just short of pulling the major upset.
Against the Indiana Hoosiers Cornley played another 36 minutes and scored 17 points to go along with four rebounds as Penn State ended a 15 game winless streak against the Hoosiers at Assembly Hall.
Cornley is playing a ton of minutes in every game. As he said in a recent interview, if he doesn't come out in the first half he knows he's not going to get a rest. He is really Penn State's only threat to score in the low post, and he's easily our best rebounder even though he only stands 6'5" tall (And some say it's closer to 6'4"). Cornley's toughness, hustle, and determination have been an inspiration to the team this season and his entire career. For that, Jamelle Cornley is our Nittany Lion of the Week.

Unfortunately...
As much confidence as Cornley inspires in everyone with his play, he sure doesn’t inspire confidence at the charity stripe. I’d feel much better if he shot at least 75% from the line, rather than the closer to 60% that he actually shoots. I cringe every time he’s shooting a free throw. Even so, Cornley is definitely a huge boon to this team, and it’ll be tough for us to replace him after this year.
Let's Go State!
Penn State's Charles Barkley
His low post/rebounding reminds me of Sir Charles
does anybody...
remember the recruiting of Cornley from Brookhaven High School in Columbus? Was OSU not interested? I watched him in the 2002 Ohio State High School Basketball playoffs and came away really impressed. He even stole the show a bit from another former Ohio High School basketball player you may have heard of…Lebron James. Granted Bron-Bron was the highlight of the tournament but Brookhaven was the Div 1 champs and Cornley was a freshman starter.
I dig
the athlete of the week topic
Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.
Thanks
It’s not necessarily the athlete of the week. It’s Nittany Lion of the Week. We may branch out from athletics a bit if a Nittany Lion makes some significant contribution to society in some way.
