CB Mike Wallace, Jelani's Best Friend/Teammate, commits to Penn State
Penn State adds another defensive back, one who they just offered this past weekend. It's not the flashy prospect that we were hoping for, in Jenkins or Justin Brown, but Wallace is a good get, if not just because he and Jenkins have been considered a "package deal." Wallace is a 2-star prospect on Rivals, a 1-star recruit per Scout, and has a grade of 73 on ESPN.
Here are the measurables:
Ht: 5-foot-10
Wt: 182 lbs
Forty: 4.57 secs
Vertical: 31 inches
Shuttle: 4.51 secs
GPA: 3.5
SAT: 1510 (no idea whether it's out of 1600 or 2400)
The ESPNU Scouting Report:
"Wallace does show good physicality and a nose for the ball on the corner blitz; could develop into a safety if he can learn to run the alley properly. Good defensive football player and should develop into a solid special teams performer as well."
Nittany Nation has the story:
"Wallace had scholarship offers from Penn State, New Mexico, Stanford, Army, Maine, New Hampshire and Towson University. However when the offer came from Penn State over the weekend it did not take Wallace long to make up his mind."

Have to wonder...
if this was part of getting Jenkins. Some on scout think it is. Now the screwed up part is if we get him and Jenkins still goes to Florida. With a tight schollie situation who knows what this could mean for the others left on the table.

Good get
This prospect looks like a solid pickup regardless of whether Jenkins follows. If he has offers from Stanford and Army, he’s gotta be a pretty smart kid and a hard worker. That’s exactly the sort of player you want to bring in with the last few scholarships. And you can be sure the recruiting staff has a better handle on scholarships than any outside analysts.

SATs
The only way the SATs are out of 1600 are if he took them as an 8th grader….They’ve been out of 2400 since March of 2005.

My thought too. However.
does a 1510/2400 land you at Stanford and Army? Or are academic standards that loose for athletes, even at those elite schools?

Yeah I can't imagine 1510 on the current SAT getting Stanford's attention
If its on the current 2400 scale, that would be like a 1010 on the former 1600 SAT. Very average at best.

How many left???
Schollies are going fast! How many do we have remaining? Do we have enough for Collins, J. Brown, Jenkins?? We’re not going to run out are we?

Not a problem
Give the coaches some credit, they know the 25 scholarship limit better than anyone.
4 guys enrolled early. They count towards last year’s total when the class was smaller than expected.
I think we have 25 or 26 commits, so only 21 or 22 count towards this year. If there are any grey shirts, they count towards next year. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are actually 5 or 6 slots still open at this point. PSU might end up with an SEC-like number of commits this year.

Gray shirts
Wallace will probably gray shirt if there isn’t room in this class. Kersey might GS too if he doesn’t qualify.

Felder or Kuntz
Would there also be a possiblity of grayshirting Felder or Kuntz instead of Wallace since they are both coming off knee injuries? That way they have plenty of time to heal, get back to full speed and get to know the offense without wasting a year of eligibility since they probably won’t play anyways.

How binding are these verbal commitments?
If a kid verbally “commits” to Penn State, does that mean he automatically gets a scholarship? Is Letter of Intent day first-come, first-served, so that the first 25 kids to actually sign their LOI get the scholarship? Can you have more kids verbal than there are scholarships? Just curious because Jenkins wants to wait to commit and we’re getting close to our limit. Can we tell a kid we’re not accepting his commitment so we can save some scholarships for kids we want more (i.e. Jenkins)?

verbals
Verbals are just words until signing day.

Verbals
When a kid is offered a scholarship he can verbal. I guess a school could pull that offer before signing day, but that would be a pretty a-hole thing to do. If Penn State promises a kid a scholarship and he verbals they’ll honor that on signing day.
As far as spots running out, they’ll make room for Jenkins or other kids they want. Most likely they are holding a scholarship for him, and if he doesn’t commit they will give that scholarship to a fifth year walk on in 2009 as a show of gratitude for their loyalty. Then they can use the scholarship next year. The other option is the gray shirt. Some kids, like Wallace, may have been told up front that if Jenkins signs with PSU then he will have to take a gray shirt and wait a year. So there shouldn’t be any remorse or hard feeling on his part because he was told this up front.
But by my count we still have enough scholarships left to take Jenkins, Brown, and one or two other kids.

Thanks
Not being a highly-recruited Div 1 athlete myself, I wasn’t sure of all the specifics.

don't get down on yourself
according to my “STARS’ rating service (I outlined it here ”http://www.blackshoediaries.com/2009/1/21/731458/mike-wallace-commits-to-ni#comments" target="_blank">http://www.blackshoediaries.com/2009/1/21/731458/mike-wallace-commits-to-ni#comments )
You would have been at least a 4-star.

Probably more like 1 or 2 stars
because the only college I wanted to go to and the only college I applied to was Penn State.
Maybe if I was interested in ND or USC or Florida I would have picked up a few more stars…

I don't think you understand my STARS ratings very well ;-)
based on your comment I think you would be a solid 5-star

After much pressure from Mothers Across America
Starting next year all recruiting services will be ranking all recruits an equal 5stars along with a certificate of achievement just for participating.

well if every team used the same standards as ND and Pitt do
then yes, every team would be National Champion every year

NICE
I love reading writers on the internets guess stuff like this. Go Jenkins. Lets pull in a top 10 class. Though it may come back to haunt us. We’ve been doing quite well with our classes ranked outside the top 20.
