Change We Can Believe In?
Mark Wogenrich of the Allentown Morning Call writes that all hope is not lost for the 2009 non-conference schedule:
The schedule might be tiring, but it's not necessarily grueling. The non-conference opponents are unspectacular (Akron, Syracuse, Temple, Eastern Illinois), and the Big Ten road trips are bearable (at Illinois, Michigan, Northwestern, Michigan State).
The two toughest conference games are at home (Sept. 26 against Iowa and Nov. 7 against Ohio State), meaning a 10- or 11-win season is entirely possible. But Penn State should (and is) begin working with ESPN to upgrade the Oct. 10 date by swapping Eastern Illinois for an opponent with more BCS cache. An ACC team is a possibility.

Of course, I wish it was a conference game.
But I’m probably the only PSU fan who would rather be in the ACC than the Big Ten.

Please
Some divine power needs to make this happen. Getting a terrible 1-AA team off the schedule does wonders for us when people are checking out PSU for polls and stuff. Plus it would be a good test for a PSU to see another team that’s good that they’re not used to.
Do you think they’d try to get a home and home or some kind of deal done, or would this be another Oregon State?

I wonder which ACC team...
I hope it is Clemson! god that would kick ass for me…even georgia tech would be great!

I would love to see clemson
One of my best friends from high school goes there now (we lived outside of Philly so god only knows why he went to Clemson), and I’d love to rub this in his face.

Maybe because the chicks there are smoooooooooooking hot...
It is a cool place to go see a football game at….It is ALOT like PSU…campus in the middle of nowhere…cow fields around…engineering and agriculture are big majors at the school, and people live and die by the football team….If you ever get the chance to go to a game there I reccomend that you do so..it is a great time, and great place…

Please let this happen
Playing Directional Illinois can do nothing but harm our profile. At least we might potentially get a modicum of respect or credit from playing an ACC team. Virginia Tech, anyone? I’d be in favor of possibly making VA Tech a semi-regular opponent, given their geographical proximity and that they’re generally pretty competitive.
Let's Go State!

So we're replacing Eastern Illinois with Duke?!? Awesome.
by Screen Name 20 on Jan 23, 2009 1:59 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
As funny as that sounds
Duke at least won a few games last season and is not a 1-AA program. I’d take it over Eastern ILL

Cutcliffe is the coach too...
Duke is gaining some cred…Cutcliffe was Payton Mannings QB coach at Tenn…I believe…people aren’t sleeping on Duke anymore in the ACC that is for sure…

My first quote was obviously loaded with sarcasm but I agree with you somewhat. Yes, Duke is a step up over Eastern Illinois, but I’d still be disappointed…less so than if we keep Eastern Illinois, but disappointed nonetheless.

This is
the best page I found with 2009 ACC football scedules, but all the dates are not filled in. For example, if you click on the big ten link every team has dates next to all their games.
http://www.mybearterritory.com/cal_bears_football_files/2009_Schedule_ACC.htm
by whiteoutonly on Jan 23, 2009 2:00 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Going off of this link
We’re looking at Duke, Wake, or NC State. Every other team has 7 home-5 away games already lined-up, with the OOC away game already locked into a date. I find it hard to believe that these teams would drop an away game against a FBS with a date already named (i.e. they’ve already started giving out tickets).
Still, I won’t complain with anyone in that collection. Duke is slightly on the way up, and NC State and Wake have been at least solid for the past few years. And hell – anything is an upgrade over Eastern Motors Illinois.

Actually
There was talk a few months ago about PSU trying to work out a deal with UNC. I wouldn’t be surprised if we end up playing the Tar Heels which I kind of like. Butch Davis has them going places. It’s one of those wins that people will say, “Yeah so what” when it happens, but by the end of the year it will be an impressive win. Kind of like Oregon State was.

Should know within two weeks
The final ACC schedule is due out “early February” according to this post on the ACC website.
It probably won’t be Virginia – they are on our schedule in 2012.
My vote would be for Virginia Tech, Maryland, or Miami but I’d take any BCS team over Eastern Illinois.

UMD, UVA, Miami, BC…

The old ACC
What teams were in the ACC when we joined the Big10? I know that a bunch of teams joined the ACC since the early 90s. I’m not sure if the old ACC would have been a good a place to be in then as it is now. Maybe it wasn’t too bad, I just can’t remember.

ACC
FSU joined the ACC after we had committed to the Big Ten, so at the time of our decision the ACC consisted os: Maryland, Virginia, UNC, Duke, Wake Forest, NC State, Clemson and Georgia Tech. Not exactly a football powerhouse conference. The only school in that group with which we had much tradition is Maryland.

The problem is though
FSU already has Maine, BYU, South Florida, and Florida on the schedule. They would have to drop one of those and three of them are already quality opponents. Maine would be the most likely to go, but I don’t see FSU doing that. They need some easy wins to get Bowl eligible.

that it would be one game at Beaver Stadium with no return trip, that has Florida State, Virginia Tech and Miami out right away.
Based on what I read above, I think we’re looking at Wake Forest

NC State
NC State would be pretty close to a screw you on a one and done too. They had a home and home with Ohio State, I don’t know that they would go for it with Penn State. Something tells me that UNC finds it’s way on to the football schedule with a home and home of their own sooner or later too.

UNC was pretty good this year, and fun to watch
That would beat the stuffin out of directional Illinois. And we could hang a banner in the Jordan Center with something like PSU win over UNC 2009, not stating that it was a football game.
