UNC Is Not The Mythical "Replacement" Team
From the story:

Why are we trying to schedule a home game?
Don’t we already have Syracuse, Temple & (Eastern Illinois or Toledo) at home? Are we trying to schedule 8 home games?

8 home games
Penn State says they want 7 home games per year, but what they really want is 7.5 home games per year. The want seven one year and eight the next. Last year we traveled to Syracuse. In 2010 we go to Alabama. So they really want 8 home games in 2009.
It’s all about money. UNC is trying to leverage more money out of us. If Penn State really wants UNC they could shell out $1.5 million and get them. Or maybe they want ESPN to foot some of the bill like they did to set up the Oregon State game last year.

And what's hilarious
is that when we has 11 games, teams always said they needed 6 home games and wanted seven. The 12th game was suppose to ease this, but all it really did was cause to schools go “hey, we can make more money if we need 7 home games and want 8”.
Weak.

isn't Guido just the "effects" guy?
I don’t think he has any say on game scheduling…

That's the problem with having the biggest
yes, I said it – biggest – stadium. And have it filled to capacity every game. Every game you play anywhere else results in less dollars.
Something needs to be done to strenghten the rediculous OOC schedules. If money is the issue, rather than dodging bigger dogs on the way to postseason glory, then let’s get the ESPN’s of the world involved in setting up marquee matchups and helping foot the bill.

and yet...
The U$C Trojans can schedule a home-and-away with the University of Minnesota. The gopher’s new stadium will still hold about 1/2 the capacity of LA Memorial Coliseum.
The folks over at Rock M Nation (Mizzou) are doubtful too because:
1) They play 2 neutral site games (Kansas and Illinois) already.
2) Missouri AD Mike Alden has already said he’s pursuing an FCS team to fill the open slot in Missouri’s schedule vacated by the removal of SMU from the schedule.
3) Missouri won’t go for the 2-for-1 because of the neutral site games mentioned above, which are already hurting the Columbia area enough as it is. Missouri already declined a 2-for-1 offer from Notre Dame recently, and I think the Missouri program is starting to view itself highly enough to feel it shouldn’t have to accept a 2-for-1 deal from anyone.
USC/Minnesota
Don’t give me that shit.
Penn State does schedule home and home games, with schools like Alabama, Nebraska, Boston College, Syracuse etc… But I don’t think that we have ever gone out of our way to schedule such a boring home and home. Even Syracuse has some tradition cache to it. USC/Minnesota is just setting up two 50 point blow outs, nothing more nothing less.
It’s not that we don’t schedule home and homes it is that we are particular about who we schedule them with, and this “opening” is not for a home and home, it is for a one off game at Beaver Stadium. If somebody decent would like to come play that’s fine, if not, bring on Eastern Illinois and I’ll meet you at Hooters.

USC gets all this credit for playing this supposedly wild OOC schedule, but when you actually look at the matchups they aren’t anything to get all riled up about (remember they only play 3 ooc games).
Team – Record in year they played
2008
Virginia (5-7)
Ohio St (10-3)
ND (7-6)
2007
Idaho (1-11)
Nebraska (5-7)
Notre Dame (3-9)
2006
Arkansas (10-4)
Nebraska (9-5)
Notre Dame (10-3)
2005
Hawaii (5-7)
Arkansas (4-7)
Notre Dame (9-3)
How many of those games are against elite teams? None? Ohio State in 2008 is probably the best matchup, and 2006 Ark wasn’t a horrible team, but the rest of that is either totally bland or downright mid-majory.
Scheduling Minnesota fits perfectly into the strategy of picking up the second tier teams that still carry a BCS name with them and then tricking the LA Times writers into thinking they are running the gauntlet every season.
BSD
in their defense
I doubt they knew that Nebraska was going to be in a down period when they scheduled them, and Notre Dame is just a yearly thing (though it is to their benefit that Notre Dame sucks). You can’t then blame them for picking up their 3rd OOC game as a non-elite team, even though they aren’t terrible teams, either.

In 2005
USC played 4 OOC games, the team you left out was Fresno St. I remember watching that game and routing for Fresno because it would have given us a chance to move into the MNC game. Fresno almost got em too. That was the Reggie Bush switching the ball behind the back game.

god that was a fun game to watch
It was right after we won the Big 10 title game at Michigan State, and a bunch of my PSU friends had come out to visit, and we went to one of the bars here in East Lansing, and PSU people were in the majority. We kept doing the WE ARE…PENN STATE!!! chant and singing the fight songs, especially whenever Fresno State did something good.

Records whatever they ended up being...
you have to admit that the names on the USC OOC schedule hold more water than what we’ve been seeing lately at PSU.
Didn’t we just re-new with UVA as our premier OOC game?
I’ll admit that as horrible as Syracuse is, they do at least have some history of fielding a team.
pinkertonpark.com - you owe yerself a laugh.
What I'm saying...
Is that I’d prefer to see Penn State play a home-and-away against a mid-rate school with half the stadium capacity (North Carolina State, Colorado, Pitt) than two boring home games against FCS schools.
The U$C thing was an example that scheduling half-decent teams to home-and-aways is done by even the most successful teams in big stadiums. Why can’t PSU?
ARGH!!!!
WE DO! LOOK AT THE SCHEDULE!
It has had Home and Away series with BCS confrence team every single year since we’ve joined the Big Ten. Sometimes the series works out great, sometimes it doesn’t. But the schedules are made years in advance. There absolutley nothing exciting about a home and home series with Minnesota. You know how I know…. WE PLAY A HOME AND HOME SERIES WITH MINNESOTA!
Not every game is going to be the battle of the century, we play fewer FCS teams than most schools. But every year there is going to be a Florida International, Easten Michigan or Souther Illinois on the schedule. That’s just the way it is, and it is never, ever, EVER, going to change. Ever.

I thought Akron was our opponent on 9/5 and we were looking for a replacement for Directional Midwestern U on 10/10.
"The sea was angry that day, my friends." G. Costanza
I think you are correct...
So as it currently stands our (PSU) OOC schedule is
Akron
Syracuse
Temple
Eastern Illinios
What a giant stinking pile of trash. Sure looks like we are scheduling our way to bowl season.
pinkertonpark.com - you owe yerself a laugh.
OOC is our downfall in football and hoops
Maybe the Coast Guard Academy or Saint Mary’s School for the Blind is available sometime.
Sheesh…
"The sea was angry that day, my friends." G. Costanza
as much as I hate our scheduling
it is hard to really bash it too much. Sure, it would keep a 1-loss Penn State team out of the national title talks, but it also makes it easier for there to be a 0-loss Penn State team.
With that said, though, I much prefer games with the big name teams. Eastern Illinois isn’t gonna get me to drive the 450 miles to State College, but I’ll be there for Alabama, etc.

To clear things up
the Mythical “Replacement” Team refers to the school expected to replace Eastern Illinois.
I’m starting to wonder if PSU is just laying down some PR foundation. They can tell the boosters and season ticket holders they really tried to get a real OOC team but couldn’t. The ridiculous thing, though, is that you can’t expect to find a real live competitive team when you won’t budge on offering better than a 2 for 1.
