2009 schedule
It would appear the football team has taken a cue from the basketball team. Nothing promotes the appearance of a having good team like pounding the crap out of some inferior opponents, oh well. This is the finalized version, no ACC opponent for you!

Looks like the Ohio State schedule of a few years ago

Although
this is technically the finalized version, but it really isn’t. The only game that hadn’t been officially locked in was Akron (even though we have known they were our first oppenent for months), but I’m guessing since you posted this it is now. The eastern Illinois has been an official game for awhile, but if we can get a better oppenent we will surely kick them out.

It's finalized
The whole point of having the press release is to report that the schedule has been finalized. Akron has been scheduled for months now and that was the only TBD game on there. The reason they held off on releasing it until now is because they were trying to change things. That obviously did not happen.

So there's no week off during the season?
Although, maybe it’s not such a bad thing, considering what happened to us after our week off in 2008.
by lmrlion on Jan 29, 2009 1:49 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
yikes
I hadn’t noticed that lack of a bye week.
Also, what happened to the season extending past Thanksgiving, or does that not start until 2010?
by The JuggerNitt on Jan 29, 2009 2:07 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
No off week
The Big Ten will end conference play before Thanksgiving again in 2009, meaning there are 12 weeks for 12 games. This will change in 2010 when we’ll starting playign MSU on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, which will allow space for a bye.

No off week is a good thing
When the season has called for big games after a bye week, we haven’t been that good Michigan in 2005 and Iowa this past season.

Oregon State
How late was it last year that we dumped whoever it was for the Beavers?
by cjapsu on Jan 29, 2009 1:52 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Oregon State
The official press release for the scheduling of the Oregon State game was December 12, 2007. And there were rumblings about it for a few weeks before then.
Oh, it was Arkansas State that we dumped for the Beavers FWIW.

I don't like Ohio State in November
I don’t want to rehash the “rivalry” debate (sooooooo played) but if PSU/OSU is going to turn into a marquee game on the Big Ten schedule, it should be the same weekend every year, and that should be the first or second Saturday in October. That way we can establish the game as kind of an Alabama/Tennessee type rivalry game.

It would be cool to have it the same weekend
If we have it in November it would really fuel the fire, because the potential to trash each others “dream seasons” is exciting stuff.

Thet's what usually so much fun about the Michigan/OSU series.

We’re always going to take a back seat to Michigan, but I don’t know why people think you can only have 1 rivalry at a time: most teams in the SEC have like 3-4 rivals.
PSU OSU rivalry has been aging like a fine wine, and it’s the one game in 2009 I’m already nervous about.

Yeah
They go to Penn State, have Iowa at home, then travel to Michigan. Tough month. Before us they have New Mexico State at home.

Disappointing...
As unrealistic as it may be, you’d always like to think each and every year Penn State has a shot at a National Championship.
Not so in 2009 with this schedule.
Maybe we can play the undefeated Mountain West Champion.
Thanks Tim Curley and/or Joe Paterno…

please
This schedule won’t have a dramatic effect on our ability to play in the national championship. If we go undefeated we’ll likely be there — the only issue is that we’d miss out if there are 2 undefeated teams from the SEC/Big 12/USC. Playing Ole Miss or NC State or Utah (pick your random rumor team) isn’t going to change that — but would make it harder to end up undefeated.

Compare this schedule
to Utah’s 2008 schedule.
Utah’s was easily more difficult…and they didn’t sniff the National Championship.
If the Iowa loss wouldn’t have occurred, the deciding factor in Penn State passing a 1 loss team would have been the win over Oregon State, who subsequently beat USC.
Face it, the Big Ten schedule doesn’t give you anymore than 1 or 2 chances for a quality win each year.
After Ohio State, who is there? Iowa? At home, without Shonn Greene. At Michigan State? If Penn State walks into that undefeated they’d better hope to win by 40, otherwise all the haters will be out in force saying they don’t belong over one-loss SEC or one-loss Big 12 or one-loss USC.
National championships are long-shots…so even setting that aside, this schedule is joke of a job by the athletic department.
Hope all the season ticket holders enjoy what Penn State has put together here for you.
Load up the RVs, and pile into your seats to watch….4 blow outs….against 4 teams that would have a hard time finding their way into the top 100 of college football?
Go Team Go! That should be fun for everyone.
For all of you not in attendance…please refer to your cable or satellite guide to find the Big Ten network…the Official Network of Penn State’s Out of Conference Schedule.

Hindsight 20/20
These schedules aren’t made immediately before the coming season. The athletic department basically has to sit down and go “ok, in 5 years, we have no idea who our players are going to be, what our talent level will be like, or even if our coach will be alive. We don’t know if Michigan is going to be a powerhouse or if they will be charmed by a snake oil salesman and sink to their lowest level in history. We don’t know if Wisconsin will still stick to the stifling traditional 3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust offense that they can’t even operate effectively. We don’t know if our long-time rival Syracuse will maintain this level of success or drop like a sucker-punched hooker. But let’s see what we can draw up here…”
The schedule is a perfect storm of fail and it was too late to really make any adjustments to it. So we’ve just got to relax and take a big bite of this crap sandwich, because our dessert as fans is coming over the course of the next few season.

Except for Iowa
We were there this year, why not next?

USC had a loss
and there was a LOT of talk about them going to the national championship game if Oregon State would have been the PAC-10 champion outright (well… at least with the same record as USC)
USC’s only quality win all year was Ohio State (unless you want to count Oregon)
Honestly, if we win out and we’re one of only two undefeated teams left or the only one left, there is no way we won’t go.

I may do a Chicago/Evanston weekend road trip over October 31st
If there’s ever a year to check Northwestern off the list, it’s this one.

Northwestern is good times
there are a lot of PSU alum in the Chicago area, and so there’s usually a pretty big PSU group.

I feel bad for Indiana having to play us at home 2 years in a row
what’s up with that?
by AdamShell on Jan 30, 2009 2:00 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
This schedule is a joke!
Not one remotely decent out of conference game, barring a miracle turnaround at Syracuse, which is a home game anyway. Only one team on that schedule is going to be ranked in the pre-season – i.e. nobody expects any of PSU’s opponents to be good next year except Ohio State.
Seriously, is it really enjoyable to watch Penn State beat up on these chumps? Not saying other programs don’t do the same thing, so maybe this is a damning of the entire 1-A college football scene. For some reason I’m really disgusted with scheduling these tomato cans.
by DK Jr. on Jan 30, 2009 2:21 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Exactly
Its just not that enjoyable watching PSU tack 40 or 50 points on some and winning by 30+.
The real tragedy is that football is so beloved…we wait for it all year, and when September finally does come…what do you get? 3 weeks of cupcakes.
Great.
There are literally only 3 games you can get excited about on that schedule. That’s 9 stinking hours of Penn State football to look forward to for an entire year.
The rest we’ll of course watch…but by no means is it ‘appointment viewing’.
And you’re right, it isn’t just Penn State. It all schools, and all involved are to blame.
Greed by fans, alumni, athletic departments, school presidents has made everyone afraid to risk getting a mark in the loss column…and unwilling to sacrifice a home pay day.
Well, hopefully the pundits punish us by ripping on our schedule repeadetly. Sure, we’ll whine about them for doing it, but its well deserved.

Scheduling is not as easy as it seems
How many d-1 teams are there? 117? So you have take into account each team with atleast a certain amount of home games. Then you eliminate the fact that a school like PSU would never travel to a place like Akron. So that eliminates some possibilities. Then you have to take into account conference scheduling and with different conferences have different amounts of conference games, that eliminates a number of possibilities. You also have to consider traveling. Many schools do not want to pay to travel out of a given region, so that eliminates a number of possibilities.
I ask someone to find me 5 top tier programs that schedule 2 or more “power house” out of conference schedules. My guess is you probably won’t, so happy hunting.
I’ll agree with the next that 3-4 “cake teams” gets old, but as you have seen in the past, these so called cake teams have been putting up good games or upsetting major opponents.
