New Blog: Sounder At Heart for Seattle Sounders Fans!

BLOGWAR!

You know, I was perusing around the internets today, and stumbled across our old friends at Mondesishouse.com.  The chief blogger (if thats what you him?), Don, does regular interview's with ESPN podcaster Dave Dameshek.  On his site, he links over to the January 2 podcast, (well, kind of, it took me to December 19th's podcast.  You have to go to the archive and pick January 2nd's if you want to hear it), and the description included "Nittany Lion fans drinking the Penn State Kool-Aid", so I clicked and skipped through whatever crap they'd discussed previously to hear what he had to say about Penn State.

The pair saved the Rose Bowl discussion for the tail-end of the podcast (37:42 in).  Any semi-regular reader of the site would know he makes no apologies for his disdain of Penn State, and that he'd take any chance to take a shot at Penn State if he could.  Fair enough.  He's a blogger, not a journalist.  He can say what he wants, and I wasn't prepared to pay it much mind until he said this:

I'll tell you what, I went to some Penn State websites today and I was, amazed, at how they could totally just change the script on what happened last night.  One of them actually said "You know, we don't make those turnovers and penalities, we win 24-14" (host laughs).  I'll tell you what that Happy Valley kool-aid, I don't know where they bottle that but wow it is powerful.

Gee, I wonder who he was speaking of?

Congratulations to the USC Trojans. Mark Sanchez had a career day. We were uncharacteristically sloppy with turnovers and penalties. They were clearly the better team tonight. I wish we could go back and replay the second quarter. Take away all those penalties and turnovers and the 24 unanswered points and we win 24-14. But that's football. That's why you play four quarters.

In order for him to read the article, I'd have to assume he is literate, however, apparantly they don't teach reading comprehension at Pitt.  I don't think I need to explain to BSD readers what Mike meant.  We won the other three quarters Thursday night, and had we played close to respectable football in the second quarter, we're right in the game to the end.

As has been talked about in the comments, BSD readers have been among the most rational and level headed following the Rose Bowl loss, which is why its hilarious that Mike, of all the blow-hearts and message board boobs he could have used to stereyotype Penn State fans as a whole with, was the one singled out.

I'm not sure how you can "change the script" on an event that has already occured, but, assuming you could, I don't know how Mike's comment did.  He didn't once say Penn State is the better team, and, a lot of us feel after seeing them last night that Southern Cal very well might be the best team in the country.  If he'd spent more than 15 seconds on the site this morning, he might have noticed that.

So, for good ol' Don, I feel compelled to sum up our discussions in one paragraph, because clearly thats about all the reading he can handle in one sitting.

Dear Don,

We at BSD are pretty bummed about losing to USC.  We exposed their defense for the fraud it was, and we're a little miffed that sloppy play and bad defense kept us from making the game more competitive.  But whatever.  We're not going to let it ruin what was a pretty darn good year.  We ended the torturous losing streak  Michigan and won in Columbus for the first time since we entered the Big 10.  We won the conference, and took back the special award that is the Land Grant Trophy.  You can say we drink Kool-aid for being proud of that, but, then you'd have to answer for the legions of Pitt fans I listened to who called Panther Hotline after the Sun Bowl to talk about what a successful season it was for the Panthers.  Here are the cold hard facts for you.  Pitt went 9-4 in the Big East, where half the teams in the league were either in Conference USA 5 years ago, or didn't even exist as I-A programs until the turn of the last century (Connecticut).  That fact that you're no longer getting the crap kicked out of you by them is not a significant accomplishment, its the lowest expectation any real college football fan would have for a team that is coached by a formal NFL head coach.  It gives me closure to know that, at the end of the day, you wish you could spend the offseason feeling the sting of the losses to Iowa and USC because that would mean your program had accomplished something.  Instead, you and Yinzr Nation will spend another offseason pretending to be relevent, and praying that Shady doesn't pull a Larry Fitz on you and leave an offense that couldn't score on a defense that we hung 45 on.

Let the Kool-Aid Flow,

The Readers of Black Shoe Diaries

haha, your assessment seems a bit angry to me.

Not that I disagree with you at all, because Pitt fans seem to take WAY too much pride in Penn State losses, and Penn State fans for the most part don’t seem to reciprocate that.

It’s just that I don’t think pointing out Pitt’s shortcomings makes me feel much better, I guess that’s what I’m really trying to say.

Also, that Mondesishouse guy seems like a real doucher. Obviously, Mike wasn’t making excuses for our play in the 2nd quarter, wasn’t even saying we would’ve won if it weren’t for…not winning…the 2nd quarter. All he was saying is that we hung in there and looked like a football team for the other 3 quarters. Sounds about right to me.

Like I Said

I was prepared to ignore whatever crap came out of his mouth, but when he basically came out and called BSD readers Kool-aid drinkers, I was beyond annoyed, because we all know that simply isn’t true. Additionally, there is no place drinking more Kool-aid right now that Pittsburgh, where 9-4 and a 3-0 loss in a bowl game is considered as success.

Oh well

When your own team loses 3-0 in the Sun Bowl I guess you have to find other ways to get your jollies.

Good find. Thanks. Don’t let internet bullies get you down.

Joke

That guys has always been very anti PSU and won’t say a nice word about them on his blog. Of course, now a days he gets other people to do most of the writing anyway.

Debating Pitt fans is usually worthless. They are lost.

Right to the end?

“We won the other three quarters Thursday night, and had we played close to respectable football in the second quarter, we’re right in the game to the end.”

If Daryll Clark doesn’t throw that interception (not intended to be a criticism! bad things happened that play), there’s a darned good chance we’re in the game at the end anyway.
