WR's 09?

After reading the fan post about 09 DB's, I wanted to get everyones input on WR's for 09.

We already know Lord Zug will be there but who else?

Moye, Powell, ??????  I really have no clue on who else is in the pipeline, replacing our Big 3 will be tough but we should get bigger and more Zug is always good.

We should be set at TE with 2 solid guys and AQ has the most potential but hasn't delivered so far in his career.

Thoughts?

Don’t forget about Brackett who will ultimately be in the role of Terrell Golden. AJ Price will make an impact, and if we get Brown, he and Smith will no doubt play as true freshman. Felder tore his knee up this year, so I’m assuming he’ll be redshirted this year.

Still, I can see guys like McDonald getting PT this year as well.

Jurevicious

We also got big things out of another big tall white reciever who wore number 83, maybe we will again.

You guys must be new here

It’s a long off season. Each spring I go over each position one at a time. We’ll discuss who will battle for the open starting positions and we’ll also break down our recruiting needs based on the depth chart. It’s a long time until next August.

Its a long

Off-season, but gotta try to keep thinking about football…. that down time between now and spring practice is really a killer… But hey we finally have a decent mens basketball team.

Justin Brown is the final key offensive recruit left on the board. He could be a great addition.

Jon Ditto??

I’m surprised no one is throwing his name around. He was recruited as a 4-star TE, what, maybe 2 years ago? From what I understand he has the speed to play in the slot if need be…. so he could be an option also. Or has he left the team? So hard to keep up with the youngins that aren’t on the radar depth chart wise.

They have him listed as 6-3, 230

Hopefully he has some wheels…I think our WR’s the next 4 years will be very good, better than the little guys we had the last couple of years…and they were good…very good.

Wow

That is a huuuuge stretch in making that claim. That would be like someone saying that Jordan Norwood and Deon Butler would end up rising to the top of Penn State receiving records back in September of 2005. I know there was a lot of hype around D-Will but we cant make any claims around guys that will be there for the next four years. The three graduating receivers will be missed more than we know next year.

I'll have what he's smoking... :)

hey, maybe we could see this cycle repeated every few years from here on out. Here’s to hoping!

I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member

I think it makes sense really

I believe this senior class (2008) will be legendary, and the receivers will be the prototypes for PSU receivers for years…

the senior receivers set the bar high, and I believe the guys left will constantly have to live up to that mark. That’s a good thing, because they (Bracket, Moye, etc.) were mentored by these seniors and now have to fill their shoes.

Poz made Connor better who made Lee better; each had a chance to be even better than the previous LB, all because they were raised in that system. Hopefully our 3 senior receivers will make their backups better in the same way. We’ll see.

Yeah, but...

…they’re at the top of the receiving records because they started for four years. They’re all good players, but none of them are really superstar WR’s, including Williams.

And...

We passed A LOT more than we used to. Do people really think Deon Butler was better than Engram, McDuffie, or Jackson? I mean, Morelli has a ton of records too. Don’t get me wrong I loved Butler and Norwood, but they didn’t really put fear into the opposition and didn’t really do much against the better defenses we played. I’m not overly worried about WR next year, especially considering what we return at the other offensive skill positions.

Fear of Williams/Norwood/Butler

I agree that these 3, while high in the PSU record books, didn’t really scare any opponent’s D coordinators. What we really need are 1 or 2 USC-type receivers. Somebody 6’4" or taller and fast. Those guys scared me every time Sanchez dropped back to pass.

by NJ lion on Jan 5, 2009 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

Right.

And that’s exactly what I’m talking about in the “Resharpening the Knives” Fanpost. Penn State was EXTREMELY LUCKY to have guys like Norwood and Butler pan out, because otherwise we would’ve been irretrievably screwed for the past three years.

So yeah, we’re all happy that the no-star and one-star WR’s performed very well, but that doesn’t mean it’s a solid job of recruiting or an enviable recruiting strategy. We’ve missed on a high number of top-shelf WR’s lately. We’re all happy to win 11 games (in a very, VERY weak Big Ten, mind you), but that doesn’t guarantee anything in 2009, 2010, 2011…

+1

They were good, very good but not great.

PSU should have made Dwill a Reggie Bush type and mis-used him for years, the other guys can’t carry Bobby Engrams or OJ’s jock

Similar situation in 05

I remember saying this in a post before, but going into are 05 year we had: Butler, a 5’11 walk-on redshirt FR receiver who played DB the year before. Williams, a 6’0 freshman who played more QB and RB at high school than WR. Norwood, a 5’10 150 pound receiver who was basically on the team because his dad was a coach. Golden, a 6’3 Soph who didn’t receive much playing time. We came out of that situation pretty well didn’t we?
Going into this year we got: Brackett, 6’6 receiver who got a good amount of playing time this year. Zug, do I need to say more? Moye, 6’5 receiver who got a good amount of playing time earlier in the year. Powell, who got a lot of game experience this year. Then factor in Price and whoever else we get this year in recruiting, and this looks like a LOT better situation than what we were in in 2005, on paper. The one thing that can’t be factored in is the heart and leadership that Williams, Butler and Norwood brought, but I’m not worried about receivers in 08. The OLine though…

Werd

Our WRs are more experienced and taller. I think the physical tools will help to cushion the blow that we will take when we lose the big three and their skills and experience.

Leadership...

…I think we can look to Clark to pick up that roll just fine.

WE ARE.......PENN STATE!

Dag, I hope he doesn't go about picking up that roll

And then reports to camp overweight and outta shape like Anthony Cleary in the mid-90s.
