USC success without honor

Rey Maualuga sexually harrasses Erin Andrews after the rose bowl game:

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/Rey-Maualuga-smooth-operator-just-don-t-tell-E?urn=ncaaf,131994

When I watched the rose bowl I saw for myself that USC was the best team in the country and will probably go down as the most successful dynasty in college football. I also witnessed a program that I would not want to be associated with. They were uber-cocky and reminded me of some of the Hollywood douche bags I would expect to see on MTV. The various gay little dances performed on the sideline and the very early celebration while our players struggled to come back.

Anyway, this story just further irritated me with the USC program and made me happy to be a Penn Stater!

I dunno

as much as I don’t like USC I thought this video was pretty funny.

I don't think it is.

She is at work….she has a family that is watching etc. She deserves the same respect as anyone else who is just trying to do thier job. If I did that at my work I would be fired and then sued.

Errrrr

Was it immature…yes

I dont think he was trying to be an A-hole, he probably thought it was funny. Things I would do at 22, I would never consider at 30.

I think they way the entire team was acting is worse than that incident: Planting the flag, dancing, taunting, etc.

GIRLS POV

It’s humiliating to have someone do that to you, espcially when cameras are rolling

Dude let it go

They won. It was a good game and they had a good time. Don’t fall back on the old “THEY DON’T HAVE ANY CLASS” line. We were having a good time on the sideline against Michigan State. They started breaking out the Roses with five minutes to go. The winners earn the right to celebrate. That’s just the way it is.

Agreed...

another college kid, wanting to make himself a story on a woman who apparently is the ‘fantasy sideline reporter’ of many out there. A lot of people think it’s funny and then there are of course those who don’t. Heck, you can’t knock the guy for having fun though.

I agree with STL’s comment about the college age as well…I’ve sure seen many an immature thing during the college years. This must just be another one of those “non-issue” issues to get the blog world and outlets talking or give them some material for a change.

Celebrating?

I do partially agree with you. I could care less about the flag planting and taunting, etc. That happens at just about every game. Its pretty much a part of the game. And yes PSU players were chewing on roses at the end of the MSU game. Celebrating is good; there is no problems with it; I do think that there is a time and place though…

The continuous dancing on the sidelines(it seemed like they did it from the second quarter to the end of the game); all of the SC players running on the field in unison and celebrating during, not after, the game; and PC’s comments that he’d be happy to “receive a penalty for fun” seem a tad bit arrogant to me. Agreed, I wouldn’t call the program classless; just tone it down a bit. I’m surprised that there wasn’t a “too much celebration” (or whatever it’s called) penalty given to SC. There is no doubt that SC is a great program, they won the game, we were handily defeated. They deserve to celebrate after the win; it irritated me that SC was celebrating the win well before the win (if that makes sense). The celebration started in the second quarter. It seemed to me that the message was “don’t bother coming back after half time”. That part, for me, is hard to let go.

Joe, what play should we call? Let's try running it up the middle!

Entitlement

I agree with you in theory Mike, but I haven’t seen a team as arrogant as Southern Cal before. There didn’t seem to be anything genuine in their celebrations to me, it seemed they were doing it for the cameras, and THATs what irritates me. When LSU won the title last year, they very well could have taken the same route Southern Cal did. They played an over matched Big 10 squad that they were supposed to beat badly and did. But THEIR celebrations were genuine, they were proud of what they accomplished.

I’m not going to say they don’t have any class, I just feel like they’re a bunch of brats that are rarely told “no”.

And as far as Maulauga goes, lets face it. The reason he did it is BECAUSE she is Erin Andrews, not because hes a stupid college kid. He wanted the attention. He knew full well what he was doing, and he knew they’re be cameras there to capture it so that people like us can sit here and talk about him. Thats all he wants. Any press is good press for those folks out there.

Mike!

That is not celebrating. That is sexual harrassment, plain and simple. What he did there was obscene and offensive and embarressing to that poor woman. Asshole.

but I haven’t seen a team as arrogant as Southern Cal before

The Miami teams from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s come to mind.

You have to understand, while they may lack class in certain aspects, it’s that cockiness, that swagger, that is why they are where they are. I’m not saying you have to be a douche bag to win games. But when you watch that team, win or lose, you can tell that they are best friends and love each other. Gay and sentimental statement? Maybe. But it’s the truth.

I support Takimoto in his effort to support Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.

Pluses and minuses

There are pluses and minuses to each attitude. USC’s players are cocky and have swagger (like their coach) and they have the natural abilities to back it up. But they’re also undisciplined and don’t play like a team like PSU does. PSU might not have as much natural ability as USC, but the teamwork and disciplined style of play makes up for it.

Just think what the old man could do with the talent level at USC. There wouldn’t be any annual losses to a major underdog, that’s for damn sure.

USC's weakness...

…was evident against Penn State, they shut down when they get a lead and sometimes they just don’t show up at all.

Against us they got way ahead, started dancing and forgot Penn State was still playing football. Penn State was down 14 with 4:00 left and had the ball inside USC’s 40. As bad as the Rose Bowl was, we had a chance at the end. Not a high percentage chance, but I looked at my friend and said “Shit, we’re still in this thing”. We were one or two plays away from making that a game.

That’s their problem.

Celebrating

is one thing, even a little trash-talking. But this is something else. Immature at best, disrespectful in any case. Big tough football player can’t talk to her to her face, has to sneak up from behind. Think of it this way, if you had a 22 year old son doing that, what would you say (or do) to him?

by Joe 96alum on Jan 4, 2009 8:50 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

No...but I did plenty of stuff at 22 my parents were not proud of.

Granted, if this was PSU and Joe saw…he would not play. It’s a different culture out there, not right or wrong…different.

Remember when Joe benched Golden for the VA forever…he went ape.

Cut the kid some slack….dumb move but nothing crazy.

Hell

I’m a man! I’m 25! And I would still dance up on EA from behind. This is a non issue.

And don’t anybody throw any lines out there about her being a dignified professional in the world of sports journalism, and she should be treated with respect. You’re the same dudes that Google image search for pictures of her ass.

It's a punk move

anyway you look at it. Be a man and talk to her to her face, no sneaking from behind. She deserves more respect than that no matter the circumstance, and a MAN would give her that respect.

by Joe 96alum on Jan 4, 2009 9:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It is extremely disrespectful to EA...

Especially given the fact that its going to show up on YouTube exactly the way it has.

If he had done it to a teammate or a USC supporter on the sideline its one thing, but to an independant professional who is preparing to do her job?

Not cool man, not cool.

And googling pictures of her ass while sitting in my mother’s basement is a far cry from grinding up on her in public in front of cameras in terms of disrespect.

by NittanyBadger on Jan 4, 2009 10:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I can't be sure and

EA may be able to file a claim for sexual harrassment. I realize that the SC player is a college kid and was just having a little fun; hey, I’m a leader when it comes to doing stupid things (i.e. instant a**hole; just add alcohol); at the same time, EA was “on the clock” so this is a job related issue. I’m not a lawyer and I can’t be sure; nonetheless, I’ve seen SH claims for what can be considered much less (posters, radio shows, etc.).

Anyway, I wouldn’t hang the SC player for this, at the same time, I agree that it is disrespectful, it was very public, and he should probably be made to receive some type of sensitivity training; if this is possible.

Joe, what play should we call? Let's try running it up the middle!

Like so many

of these threads, we’ve woven multiple issues into one combined pt & counterpoint. Let’s un-weave a bit:

1. Sexual harassment, clear and present, in the vid. He may be a ‘kid,’ but this cannot be endorsed in any way, even with ‘well, when I was in college…’ If you were in college and did this, you were also harassing. It’s society’s responsibility (in the absence of parents or coaches having done so) to teach these ‘kids’ right and wrong.
2. This is nowhere near the same ballbark as PRIVATELY doing whatever your deviant little minds can imagine to pictures of EA. It’s like the difference between stickin your tongue in the holiest of holies and a foot massage.
3. Celebration can be done without taunting. Joe said he didn’t see any taunting by USC and even compared their early celebrations to ours vs. MSU.

How many times has USC been on TV this year

Thirteen, right? Think that maybe it’s possible that Ray had met Erin Andrews before? I would say that is not only possible, but probably pretty likely. Maybe it was a joke?

Or the kid could just be an asshole.

Your harassment class sounds...

boring…

I have been through about 1000 of them (not because I got in trouble, mind you) and the only thing that made some of them entertaining were some of the videos. The military videos that showed an airman getting ‘harassed’ by some high ranking officer cougar and him looking all uncomfortable and later reporting it were hilarious. Yeah… like that ever happens… lol

In fact, it sounds so hot that I might join the Air Force if that’s what they have to offer.

I had an old hard-nosed teacher that taught me this line:

“You’re not sorry… you just got caught!”

How true is that? I love that line and will use it til the day I die. Do you think anybody that gets cuaght doing garbage like this would ever mutter a syllable of remorse if the press and general public didn’t jump on it first? No waaaaaay

What if Erin was your daughter, buggy?

I won’t ask about if she was your mom, but it also works. That should not qualify as ‘all he did,’ a phrase that minimizes the act.

Look, you could make the case that I’m the biggest hypocrite in the world (I’d debate it forcefully), for some of the behaviors I endorse, but disrespecting women is on my short list of indefensible behaviors. The defining distinction here is context. Two things make this bad:

1. She is at work.
2. It was publicly demeaning

One makes it harassment and the lawyers in the house can chime in as to his chances of beating it were she to actually file. Number two is a little more malleable as to interpretations of demeaning. Perhaps you could raise the possibility, as jesse preposterously noted, that EA could be in on it. Even in that ridiculous context, is it not demeaning to other women to even see it? Some of the families in here have young daughters. How would you explain to your 5-10yo daughter what was going on there? How would you feel if you were a woman (and a prior victim of sexual harassment or worse—or never even a victim at all), and you saw this at the stadium or this video on the internets? Or how would you feel if you read in BSD multiple comments that downplay the act with any number of disclaimers as to why it was ok?

In many other contexts it could be even more grey, enough that I’d let my normal antithesis for Propriety keep me from speaking out, but this one’s easy to stand against.

And too dangerous to our mothers, daughters, wives and girlfriends to let slide.

I’ve seen enough sexual harrassment training vids to know that he would lose if she cared to file.
