Game Day Open Thread - Purdue Boilermakers

Purdue Boilermakers at Penn St. Nittany Lions, Jan 6, 2009 9:00 PM EST

Penn State Nittany Lions  11-3 (1-1) Purdue Boilermakers  11-3 (0-1)

We kind of put the basketball team on the back burner during bowl season and the winter break, but it's time to shake off the cobwebs and get geared up for the Big Ten basketball season. The Nittany Lions are off to a pretty good start so far having dispatched Northwestern and coming up just short in Wisconsin. I know a loss to the Badgers doesn't sound like a good thing, but Penn State led the game with five minutes to go and they were in it to the end. Compare that to trips to Madison in recent years where we're down by 30 points at halftime and I would call that progress. Tonight will be a much tougher challenge against a much more talented team. But Off the Tracks is reporting that Robbie Hummel and Chris Kramer will not be playing, so it sounds like Purdue might be ripe for the upset.

For those interested you can watch the game tonight on the BTN at 9 PM ET. Team stats after the jump.

impressive loss?

I never thought a loss would be a good thing, but the whole team was coming off of a horrible flu-bug and Battle scored something like 7 points, yet they were still in it. I have a good feeling tonight if they can handle the defensive pressure of Purdue.

I am going

I am going to brave the ice and head over in about 10 minutes.
I have talked to a buch of folks who are not going. :-(
I do not expect a very big crowd. Most of the students have not returned yet so it will most likely be an older crowd.

I was most impressed with Brooks and Jones last game, they are developing as the season goes on.

It will be good if they can continue the trend, Ott looks lost still. Cornley, Pringle, and Battle are going to have a big night if we are going to challenge Purdue. The B10 is somewhat brutal this year, we should have some great close games though.

We just needed a couple players, a couple people to buy in to the fact and we were able to do it. --A.Q. Shipley

Looks like about 500 people in attendance. Crappy night to be venturing outside, even if you’re local

Five offensive rebounds. I think Brooks had three of them. Then a nice steal by Battle.

What is with the camera man? It’s like he’s sitting in the stands with a hand held camera? I feel like I’m watching the Blair Witch Project. We’ll all have motion sickness by the end of the game.

Got lucky there.

They can’t just let them drive the baseline like that. Jones has to guard against that and be ready to rotate down and not get caught guarding the high screen.

11-0

I’d say this qualifies as a good start.

Inevitably, someone’s going to wander by BSD, see this post, and think “wow, there are 40 posts for a basketball game!” And it’s just going to be us.

(And Roland86, apparently. Way to ruin it, dude.)

Once and for all (not really)

Okay, a Wikipedia example:

Smokers tend to experience cognitive dissonance because it is widely accepted that cigarettes cause lung cancer, yet virtually everyone wants to live a long and healthy life. In terms of the theory, the desire to live a long life is dissonant with the activity of doing something that will most likely shorten one’s life. The tension produced by these contradictory ideas can be reduced by quitting smoking, denying the evidence of lung cancer, or justifying one’s smoking. For example, a smoker could rationalize his or her behavior by concluding that everyone dies and so cigarettes do not actually change anything. Or a person could believe that smoking keeps one from gaining weight, which would also be unhealthy.

This case of dissonance could also be interpreted in terms of a threat to the self-concept. The thought, “I am increasing my risk of lung cancer” is dissonant with the self-related belief, “I am a smart, reasonable human being.” Because it is often easier to make excuses than it is to change behavior, dissonance theory leads to the conclusion that humans are rationalizing and not always rational beings.

Penn State Faculty and Staff Day will receive $5 tickets at the door with a valid University ID. Season ticket holders may also upgrade their seats to the lower level student section near the floor by contacting the ticket office prior to game time.

This is a nice first step letting people move into vacant seats. But I still think they should allow people to buy lower tier seats if the season ticket holder doesn’t show up. A lot of people might show up if they felt like they could get a decent seat.

Since we have a little down time

About 5-6 years ago, I was 27 years old and lived in a last-gasp “Old School” style house in the Philly area with some other single friends. Two of us were diehard PSU’ers, so we decided to plunk down the money for the ESPN basketball GamePlan. After a while, we’d do shots if PSU actually broke the 25 point mark at halftime, which was, like, never.

Okay, taking the dogs out in the sleet / freezing rain. Should be fun.

Our RPI has gotten a lot better in the last week

We were in the 140s last week and now we’re right behind Purdue at 75. I’m not exactly sure how this works but I know it’s a factor in making the tourney each year. Last night’s win was big. I think if we stay the course, we’ll be invited to the dance this year. I hope we stay healthy and keep our heads!
