Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Your Percentage Of Heart Attack, Computed

There aren't very many sports analysts I respect more than Bill James.  The latest version of Penn State basketball, along with a random link from this morning I can no long track down, lead me to something he wrote back in March:

There comes a time in a relationship when a woman will still answer your phone calls, but you're wasting your money buying flowers; you know what I'm saying?

[...]

The Jayhawks usually win by 15 or 20 points, and sometime in about 1968 I started wondering whether there wasn't some way to decide when the game was no longer in doubt. I began to experiment with heuristic inventions to try to find the moment at which the line was crossed. A heuristic could be loosely defined as a mathematical rule that works even though no licensed mathematician would be caught dead associating with it.

A heuristic can more literally be defined as "a method that often rapidly leads to a solution that is usually reasonably close to the best possible answer". A "rule of thumb" is another way to describe it.

Click through to read more about the formula, but the basic gist is that you need to maintain a strong "safety margin" in order to guard against quick scores in order to lock up a win.

And he's fully aware that the improbable does happen.

It's really unusual for a team to come from 16 back with four to play and win, but it does happen. I would guess it happens twice a year somewhere in the world of college basketball.

He says this, perhaps, because this happened once.

Star-divide

That was 8 points in 9 seconds; James calls an 8 point lead with 9 seconds left "over", 100%. The Knicks were actually only up 6 though, a situation James says is "So close. The lead is 69% safe".

Anyway, let's get back to Penn State, their tendency to hit free throws at a 3rd grade level, and this week's game against Purdue. The final minute of that game through the eyes of The Bill James Lead Calculator [Note: this has been updated since ESPN is apparently incapable of counting from time to time.  Correct play-by-play can be found at AOL]  :

Time Lead Ball Last Event % Notes
0:58 3 PSU Lewis Jackson made Three Point Jumper. 0 "A three point lead is never safe" -James
0:25 5 PUR Andrew Jones III made Two Point Layup. Assisted by Talor Battle. 9
0:16 5 PSU Foul on Keaton Grant 14
0:16 5 PSU Talor Battle missed Free Throw. 0
0:16 6 PUR Talor Battle made Free Throw. 39 If he hits both FTs this jumps to 77%.
0:09 6 PUR JaJuan Johnson Offensive Rebound. 89 PSU rebound seals the deal according to James, 100%.
0:04 6 PUR Foul on Andrew Jones III 100 So Purdue is "dead", but hold on.
0:04 5 PUR JaJuan Johnson made Free Throw. n/a Big hit.  Because the rebound is up for grabs, a % can't really be applied here.
0:04 5 PUR JaJuan Johnson missed Free Throw. 56 Big hit, obviously.  They are back in it.
0:04 5 PUR Purdue Offensive Rebound. 56 Big rebound by Purdue, a PSU rebound seals the deal according to James, 100%.
0:01 3 PSU JaJuan Johnson made Two Point Layup. 0 "A three point lead is never safe" -James

Battle missed a big free throw with 16 seconds left, one of several failed chances to close the gap.  Penn State's foul with four seconds was a terrible move in that situation, one that literally unsealed what should have been a sure thing.

Penn State played very well in many facets of the game, but between this ending and the one against Georgia Tech, I don't know how much longer Penn State can neglect their free shots, make foolish plays on the court, and continue to get away with some of these wins.

If they are serious about being taken seriously, they are going to have to do something about being ranked 234th nationally (that's not made up) in FT%.

You’d think you could practice something as elementary as FT shooting an hour a day 7 days a week and see some improvement. Do what the NCAAF does and pipe noise into the practice court for added realism. Am I wrong?

Or no noise

If you want to simulate a game at the BJC. [zing1!!]

I read that article

It’s good stuff. A writer on SI or CBS linked to it in an article written right after the Kansas / UNC game in which Billy Packer declared the game over with like 8 to play in the 1st half. Which obviously we found out, wasn’t completely safe despite Kansas holding on to win big.

Except

We won by three points? Are you using the right numbers here? I’m sure it still shows the same effect.

by BSD on Jan 8, 2009 3:02 PM EST reply actions

I just took the data and ran.

Here is the ESPN play-by-play. They say we only won by two. Except in the box score, it was three there.

When did we go up by three?

by KevinHD on Jan 8, 2009 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

Well, ESPN effed me. Everyone get ready for the sequel.

AOL has a play by play, apparently, I’ll try and fix it.

Well at least I found another way to not go to ESPN. This is almost as bad as the time they called our best linebacker Dan O’Connor.

Their play-by-plays are f'd up for football as well

I remember going to some of the PSU games and they messed up yardage, starting position, etc. Not very reliable from that standpoint, and never to be trusted again…until they’re the only media outlet left after they’ve taken over the world.

White and Irish LB – good thing he graduated. He couldn’t have been any good.

From the beginning

The entire thing is off by one point. We were up by three points with 0:58 to play.

Just to throw tWWL even further under the bus

This ad was on their college football front page the week before the bowl games began. Looks like some stellar matchups to me…who knew?

I bleed Blue and White.

Yes, but

everyone was clammoring to see the real compelling matchup of #5 Navy vs #2 Colorado.

I'd like to start the Keep Ott OUT movement.

Two Reasons to stay away…He is Andrew Ott and he comes from New Jersey

Strange...

Everything I’ve ever seen on him says he’s from Pennsylvania. Maybe it’s just a way to remind him not to use last season’s jersey…

Bill James

Is there a sport he doesn’t analyze? This morning I saw somehting of his on the BCS.

Great youtuberation!

Reggie Miller was my basketball hero when I was little. I think it’s because of his goofy ears and the ability to drain threes off the screen. I’m halfway as awesome as him. Too bad it’s the ears and not the silky-smooth J.
