My Rose Bowl Experience
Couldn't decide where best to post this. Figured the Tailgating post will disappear here soon, despite its recs, and we're getting so many fanposts these days that Rockin's thread has already been bumped off the front page. Decided on a new Fanpost with hopes it might make it through the day on page 1. Can you believe this is my first time posting to youtube? Hope the vids turn out.
First up, tho: a big shout out to my fellow BSD tailgaters The Mighty Erik & Rockin. That was cool as hell to travel cross the country and tailgate with cool cats I just met for the first time in person that morning, but who I felt like I had a pretty decent feel for already anyway. It was real cool for me. I'm a lifelong PSU fan, but not an alum and the majority of my PSU experiences have been family-related. It's weird now I'm thinking about it, that although I've got a decently sized social group in DC, it's pretty diverse and I've actually got very few Penn State friends outside my family. I was proud of my dukie bro-in-law, who did pretty well despite not being a PSU fan, but I really appreciated TME's & Rockin's PSU brotherhood! I really dug how close you were with your dad, TME. I know you miss him, and it was good to hear about him. There's not a PSU game that goes by that I don't think of my ole man, and it was kinda nice to think of our two pops up there lovin it that we were down here partying together at the Granddady. And going the other direction on the generational tree, it was real cool to see you and your daughter sharing this experience together, Rockin. I'm hoping that, being your spawn, Kt's experienced enough that our little tailgate wasn't too deviant for her. I dig that you two got inked up together. And your tat is absolutely badass!
Sorry we missed some of the rest of you who made the trip; maybe this will build some momentum and can be re-created in some form in the future.
I know I wrote it before, but tailgating in sunny 70degree weather, in a freakin golf course, is downright surreal. It's a real narrow valley where the stadium is, and with the golf course as parking lot, they bring you in on different holes (greens are blocked off), and stack you up 5 cars in a row. Lots of vets/locals quickly hauled their gear outta their cars and out of the carstacks into open space on the fairways. Not us. We didn't really have enough gear, so stayed trunkside and put back our brews there. A group of PSU youngers were also in there, and they were spinning all the records the kids these days play, so it ended up alright. Plus, JoePa came through!
And was kind enough to take a photo with us. He of course kept insisting 'hide the beers, tho, hide the beers.'
I loved how their weather protection gear of choice was the shade tent! Was also really impressed with the lax rules on open flames. I saw one full-on campfire, with no grill on it, and a dude workin over some bacon in a cast-iron skillet.
And the stadium? What a Grand Ole Daddy!
Built in the twenties, and dug out, such that the structure doesn't stand very tall above ground outside (such that you can't see if from miles away like ours--such that when you're ushered into your spot in the golf course you're cursing, thinking you're miles away), it's every bit as classic as the nickname implies. Our north endzone view only gave a small glimpse of the San Gabriel mountains,
But afforded us an excellent view of Blue Sapphire:
The tunnels were narrow and the pissers were too few and too small, but when you can house 93,000 and you also invite Penn State fans? Well.......suffice it to say I'm tearing up just typing. Here's a quick first look with motion:
The Rose Bowl was also kind enough to leave blue & white pompoms for us at our seats. I lost my pompom virginity, and it was better than I expected.
And eventually there was a game. As you can hear from the corny audio (and as you learned by the end of the first half), we really could have used a DWheels kickoff return TD.
And of course, there was the final result,
one we all hoped would have been different, but one which, for me, actually did very little to diminish the overwhelming positivity of the whole experience (despite my audio on that one, I did think we fought valiantly in the 2nd half). Watching Penn State play in the Granddaddy of them all is definitely a Must Do At Least Once endorsement from this fan. See you all next year! --jp

My gawd
I need serious help. First time around, I pasted pics into the create fanpost window, which initially looked good, in draft, preview and published modes. But I spose SB removes them after some short delay.
Second time, I used the ‘insert image’ function in the create fanpost window, but they only look like links. Any tips for this allthumbs dude?

Jeesh
Took all that emotion & time organizing it all, then jacked up the image imports. My problem was not using image urls—using the stupid whole page url that my image was sitting on. Google Chrome helped me in the end with their friendly right-click menu option = Copy Image URL. Then just pasted that into the insert tool. All provided in case anybody else could is as newbie as me with the tools and could use the info. Anyway, hope you enjoy.

response on the tat picture....
i have the same tattoo but i have the lions face, facing forwards and have more of a half sleeve penn state tattoo with a bunch of stuff around it such as the lion shrine and a couple of other things. in this picture i see that the penn state lions head is backwards and with tats, his tattoo is bad luck. many people get dragons or whatever but they are always getting them facing forwards or upwards and never facing downwards or behind. in this picture, the lions head is facing backwards which is what i said…bad luck….

If it was facing the other way
it wouldnt be our logo. It would be the reverse of our logo, if i am understanding you correctly.

Great post
I loved meeting you guys also. KT was cool with our tailgating. Her only comment was to the effect that she couldn’t believe we had never met before because we acted like we had known each other for a long time. Thanks to BSD we had :) As for the tat I don’t believe a tattoo is going to effect my luck in either way but if it was facing the wrong way it would not in actuality be the PSU logo. Looking forward to next years tailgate and here is hoping we can get some more of the BSD family to join the festivities.

Finally back to BSD!
The past week or so has been pretty hectic, and I haven’t been around a computer much. The gf and I stayed in SoCal until the 6th doing touristy stuff, and since then I’ve just been trying to catch back up at lab (still nowhere near caught up, and so I’ll probably be on here very infrequently for the next few weeks), so I just haven’t had the time to get on BSD.
Anyway, to those who went to the tailgate, sorry I didn’t make it. My plans did not go as planned, and my extent of Rose Bowl tailgating consisted of trying to find your guys, and another person I know’s tailgates, and I didn’t even find theirs until after 1pm. The biggest complication was appeasing my non-football loving girlfriend who had to go and be born on Jan 1st (and who also celebrated a little to much the night before). The only reason I got her to go out to California with me was with promises to go down to San Diego for the zoo (she’s a zoologist and has always wanted to go down there).
Anyway, I was staying at my cousin’s, who lives in Pasadena, albeit on the opposite side of the city from where the stadium is. My girlfriend, my cousin, and her boyfriend all wanted to watch the parade, and it went by about 2 blocks from their place, so that’s where we watched, and my intentions were to then go straight to the stadium to tailgate. I guess I didn’t relay those intentions well (apparently, “I want to go tailgate right now” wasn’t clear enough) since my girlfriend apparently thought this was a good time to take a nap without telling me. I was finally able to drag her out around 11:30 (I almost left to go to the game without her and sell her ticket), and we got a ride halfway to the stadium and had to walk the rest of the way (she can walk around 2 different zoos from 9 am til 5 pm fine, but apparently a 1-2 mile long walk to the stadium was too hard for her).
TME had called me at some point during that time, but the call went straight to voicemail, and I didn’t get it until around 1pm, at which time I was still trying to drag the gf to the stadium. It was hard to not get mad at her, since it was her birthday, and she was joining me and doing something she really doesn’t like, but I was definitely seething inside. I texted TME back mentioning trying to meet up after the game, but I don’t know if I sent it to the right # or not (or maybe he doesn’t text?) but I never heard back. Didn’t matter, though, cuz we didn’t stick around anyway.
The worst part is, I smuggled a 6-pack of Yuengling with me, and was only able to drink 3 (1 me, one gf, and one friend that we met up with right before going into the stadium), and left the rest at their tailgate. Ah well, hopefully they enjoyed them afterwards.

Dare we say
Yuengling is an official BSD and PSU football sponsor?

USC Fans
What were your thoughts on the USC fans… I would say they seemed more like NFL fans than college fans, but that is just my opinion of what I saw.
