True or False

Joe Paterno is a tenured professor that can’t be fired by the Athletic Director, but rather, can only be fired for cause by the Faculty Senate?

I’m pretty sure that it’s true.

Look, I’ve been damn lucky. I’m a full professor here. I’m not at the mercy of alumni, they can’t interfere with me. I’ve never had the dilemma of whether I should have to cheat to save my career. So I’m reluctant to criticize the coaches who have had to break rules. The people to blame for recruiting violations are college faculties, administrations and—yes—the NCAA. The NCAA has to take the responsibility. If the NCAA had 12, 15 guys on the road digging up violations, things would be different. Now the only way violators are caught is if someone blows the whistle on them.

Not Such An Ordinary Joe November 1973. A great read if you’ve never seen it.

The Classic

Back when Joe liked and drank with ‘the media.’ Open, forthcoming, honest. Vintage JVP.

In fairness to Joe

What is the name of the reporter that wants to come to State College for three days, and sit around and talk about academics, politics and the meaning of life? My bet is Paterno would still do it.

None of the reporting is like that anymore. Now, you have your weekly news confrence and a speaker box is harassing you about when you are going to retire for literally the 5,000th time in the last 15 years.

When I ask my girlfriend where the remote is, she doesn’t hear me, and I have to repeat myself, I’ve already started to get annoyed. Imagine that, for 20 or so years? Eventually, somebodies going to get shot.

Agreed

It’s definitely a two-way street. Where do I sign up? Think my cred as a BSD commenter is sufficient to score an ‘interview’ with Joe to sip some Old Granddad and talk academics, the classics, and the meaning of life? Shit dude, I’d fork over more than the cost of a season ticket to Curley for that privilege.

Also, please don’t shoot your girlfriend.

You have to love this quote

Yes, but that's as a professor.

I don’t think coach = professor. Not sure.

So they can fire him....

but they have to pay him for the rest of his life. That is the kind of job security you turn the NFL down for.

Yeah he could be fired as head football coach

and still be on PSU’s bankroll. As was already stated, not too bad of a gig

I can't stop shaking my head!

It’s things like that that kept me from going into a medical career. That and the whole needing to be smart thing.

It's called calcium dude, it's important.

As gross as I find extremely broken appendages I can’t help but be curious as to how in the hell his leg snapped like that when it looks like he’s just running a sprint. I’ve seen video of this actually happening to people, but from the few I can remember, they’re all pretty obvious as to how it happened: slide tackle in a professional soccer match to the middle of the shin, an ATV accident where a guy’s femur snapped in half (that’s the largest bone in the body…for people not like myself that is, hehe) after the ATV flipped over and landed on him, plus various skateboarding, extreme sports, etc. videos where a guy falls, and puts the full weight of his body on one arm or leg bone, snapping it in half like a Popsicle stick.

This one I can’t figure out though.
