Big 12 problem in the Big Ten????
One of my co-worker (who is an OSU alum) and I had a conversation which we both didn't know the rules to. The scenerio that Big XII was faced last year regarding the Big XII South Champion can possibly surface in the Big Ten (probably slightly differently since we don't have a North and South and for that matter a championship game). I'm talking about a 3 way tie for the Big Ten Championship.
If... Iowa looses to OSU... and OSU looses to Penn State... and rest of the teams finish out the season without a loss. There should be a 3 way tie in conference record all with one loss. How does Big Ten sort out who goes to the Rose Bowl and who is 2 and 3(for bowl purposes)? Would it be the team that has the best overall record, then head to head, finally the AP ranking???
I know its early but anyone know the rules behind this??? Any comment on how we can resolve this matter in the future? The championship game wouldn't solve anything since all the teams don't play each other. I hate this Co-Championship BS... because my coworker still has the 08 Big Ten championship banner in his office which I laugh at everytime I walk by.
Thanks in advace...
I hate IOWA!

Don't they sort it out by who's been to the Rose Bowl more recently?

No
They changed it from last year. See my comment below. Now if all three teams are tied in overall win percentage, the team with the highest BCS rank goes to the Rose Bowl.

Here ya go
The Big Ten tie breakers.
http://www.bigten.org/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/102204aad.html
If I read it correctly, Ohio State would be eliminated from the three-way tie due to their overall record. Then Iowa and PSU would have to revert to the two-way tiebreaker. Since Iowa won the head to head, they would go to the Rose Bowl.

Of course
But you’d have to be a real loser to claim big ten champs with a team that beat you. (See also: OSU’s 400 consecutive big ten titles)

Not so much
If there’s a three way tie where Iowa>PSU>OSU>Iowa, there’s no shame in claiming co-champs there. We would have just as much claim as anyone.

Legitimate question
Two entirely different designations:
1. The Big Ten Champion
2. Who Goes to the BCS Rose Bowl
All three could print B10 Championship shirts.

Personally, despite however much I may dislike or blame Iowa, I have no problem with them going to a Rose Bowl seeing as how they beat us head to head. Thats the real tiebreaker in my opinion. Now, if a team we defeated would get in ahead of us, THAT would be maddening.

I wouldn't do it
But there’s quite a bit of shite I wouldn’t do that Buckeye fans have no qualms with.
Plus, I believe we’ll find that the point is moo. I’ve got the fighting Berties over the Hawks in Camp Randall this weekend. If we can squeak out our win vs. an otherwise bigten-undefeated Brutus, it’s WIscy we may have to share with. With no opportunity to beat them, I would have no problem rockin a championship shirt and leaving the suckeyes to suck it like the neighbor’s dog.
Again, tho, another moo point. DC17 made it clear to us that this year is going to be far more than the one-game season it could have been. Can he display enough poise to emerge from these next three games (2 on the road) unscathed?

I’m of the opinion that Wisconsin will only beat Iowa if Stanzi throws a STANZIBALL at a really bad spot in the game. And that is entirely feasible. Hell, it’s likely. But like I’ve said before, I do not trust Bielema at all. STANZIBALL puts them over the top, 21-17
Then Bertie will probably lose two weeks later in Bloomington.

Bilema
I actually agree with RR here. Jesus the sky must be falling! Bielema is not a good coach and consistently makes poor decisions. Wisco was down three scores to OSU last week in the 4th quarter (Bielema need two touchdowns, two extra points and a field goal to tie or two TD’s an extra pt., a two pt. conversion and a field goal to win). The Badgers were down to about the OSU 5 until they received a holding call. At that point the % of scoring a TD was almost nil. Instead of kicking the field goal on 4th and 15…dumbass goes for the touchdown and comes away with nothing. Poor decision given the down, distance and number of scores needed. That said if Iowa plays like they did agains N. Iowa and Arkansas St. anything is possible.
I thought only safeties played 15 yards off the ball?

IOWA IS NOT THAT GOOD
4 turnovers from Penn State, 5 from Michigan…and those are their only significant wins thus far. You can argue all you want that their defense is “opportunistic” (see: lucky) but chances are that evens out over the course of a season. I’m not buying them as the #12 team in the country. Don’t get me wrong, they beat us fair and square on our home field in a Whitehouse, but I can’t convince myself they are a Big Ten championship caliber team.
If they lose the turnover battle in any meaningful conference game this season (at Wisky, at MSU, NW, at tOSU, Minn) I think they go down.

To convince myself that Iowa isn't a Big Ten championship caliber team, I must first convince myself that the Big Ten is good
I can’t do that.
Wisconsin? Eh. Not so good, but at least they have home field advantage.
Michigan State hasn’t run the ball that well. I think Iowa can beat them because they can make MSU one-dimensional, and Iowa’s secondary is the best they’ve had in a while.
Northwestern/Indiana/Minnesota could be their random inexplicable loss. Pick one. They get Minny at home, Northwestern isn’t good, and Indiana is just weird. And probably not good either.
Ohio State? Big fat L.

by HailState77 on Oct 13, 2009 11:38 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Thats a whole new can of worms..
To have a championship game, the conference would need a 12th team. Which means finding one, then making 2 divisions, etc. Its a logistical nightmare.
Deus nobiscum, quis contra?
by chocochuck02 on Oct 13, 2009 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
and the team added would have to be decent too. With the current lineup, one of the divisions would be along the lines of the Big 12 north.
On a semi-related note, one of the worst things that could happen to the B10 this year is two teams in the BCS. IMO, since the B10 is one of the smaller conferences, sending two teams to the BCS basically creates unfavorable matchups in every other bowl game. Result: a 1-6 bowl season. How would this have turned out:
Outback Bowl: Michigan State vs South Carolina
Capital One Bowl: Georgia vs Ohio State
Insight Bowl: Kansas vs Northwestern
Alamo Bowl: Missouri vs Wisconsin
Champs Sports Bowl:Florida State vs Iowa
Rose Bowl: Southern California vs Penn State
My guess would be > than .500

The disturbing part of the exercise
It seems that we need to win all of our games and hope Iowa drops two games if we want to go to the Rose Bowl.
Otherwise, it looks like a BCS at large is our best hope. And then we will have to hope we get picked over Ohio State for that. Not an outside possibility if they have two losses (USC and us)

Not just that.
It’s super early, but if you assume the Big Ten scenario that was laid out, they would need at least a couple of these to help out our chances (assuming no huge upsets in the regular season):
-A Texas win in the Big XII Championship game.
-Losses by TCU and Boise State.
-We would need two losses by Notre Dame. With only a loss to USC, a 10-2 ND goes ahead of us.
-One more loss by Oregon or USC
by Cairo on Oct 13, 2009 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Lou is that you?????
ND is only ranked 25th right now. If they lose to USC this week, they will go back to being unranked. BC, Navy, Pitt and Stanford all have the ability to beat this ND team. Even if ND does win out after the USC loss though they would not jump an 11-1 PSU team into the BCS. I think the only way the Irish get to a BCS game is by beating the only ranked team on their schedule ; that team is USC and that will not happen. Boise State on the other hand may sneek their way into the BCS by virtue of playing absolutely no one.
I thought only safeties played 15 yards off the ball?
by pic15 on Oct 13, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
True
We have a few favorable things going for us in competitors’ play tho:
- Iowa looks capable of losing to OSU & Wiscy, or even Sparty or Minny(?)(will know more after this weekend’s look at the gophers)
- Wiscy looks capable of losing to Meatchicken
There seems to be enough at play there to be able to reasonably continue to hope. Maybe it’s better to root for Iowa over Wiscy first, then hope against them vs. brutus, sparty, minny?
I’d say, based on our performance thus far, us running our table seems far more unreasonable. We ARE improving, I believe. But all three of these next pre-brutus games are more difficult tests than we’ve seen yet, barring Iowa.

This whole thing depends on Ohio State beating Iowa, so there’s one loss for the Hawkeyes right there. And they are notorious for dropping a WTF? game against someone like Northwestern or Illinois.
