It's Already Snowing

God Created the World Out Of Nothing, Paterno Built A National Superpower On Cow Fields...

Issued by The National Weather Service
State College, PA
10:18 am EDT, Thu., Oct. 15, 2009

… WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 AM EDT SATURDAY…

THE WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 AM EDT SATURDAY.

PRECIPITATION WILL BE ELEVATION DEPENDENT FOR MUCH OF THE NEXT 36 HOURS. IN THE VALLEYS… PERIODS OF RAIN ARE EXPECTED THROUGH LATE AFTERNOON… OCCASIONALLY MIXING WITH OR CHANGING TO SNOW WITH LITTLE TO NO ACCUMULATION. HOWEVER… ON THE RIDGES RAIN WILL MIX WITH AND CHANGE TO MOSTLY WET SNOW WITH ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 2 INCHES POSSIBLE BY LATE AFTERNOON.

THE PRECIPITATION WILL CONTINUE AS MAINLY SNOW OVER THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS TONIGHT. THE VALLEYS WILL HAVE MIXED RAIN AND SNOW CONTINUE TONIGHT… AS THE SNOW LEVEL DROPS TO ELEVATIONS BELOW 1400 FEET LATE TONIGHT. FRIDAY WILL FEATURE A SIMILAR MIX OF RAIN AND SNOW IN THE VALLEYS… WHILE RIDGES SEE MOSTLY SNOW MIXED WITH RAIN AT TIMES. THE SNOW LEVEL WILL LOWER EVEN FURTHER AFTER SUNSET ON FRIDAY. ANOTHER WAVE OF LOW PRESSURE MAY ENHANCE THE PRECIPITATION AGAIN LATE FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY… WITH ADDITIONAL ACCUMULATIONS POSSIBLE THROUGH MID MORNING SATURDAY.

THE SNOW WILL BE VERY WET AND HEAVY WITH A HIGH WATER CONTENT. THE HEAVIEST OF THE ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE OVER THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS. THE VALLEY LOCATIONS SHOULD HAVE LITTLE SNOW ON THE GROUND UNTIL FRIDAY NIGHT. BUT… EVEN THE VALLEYS ARE EXPECTED TO SEE AN INCH OR TWO OF THIS SLUSHY SNOW BY SATURDAY MORNING. MOST OF THE ACCUMULATIONS WILL OCCUR AT NIGHT IN VALLEY LOCATIONS.

THIS HEAVY WET SNOW WILL COLLECT MAINLY ON THE TREES AND COLDER SURFACES… BUT THE ROADS MAY BE GENERALLY WET AS THE GROUND IS STILL RELATIVELY WARM. THE HEAVY WET SNOW ON TREES THAT STILL HAVE MOST OF THE LEAVES ON THEM WILL LEAD TO TREE DAMAGE AND PERHAPS A FEW POWER OUTAGES… MAINLY OVER THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS.

ACROSS THE ADVISORY AREA… ACCUMULATIONS BY SATURDAY MORNING SHOULD RANGE FROM AROUND 2 INCHES IN THE VALLEYS TO 6 INCHES ON THE RIDGE TOPS. THE WEIGHT OF THE SNOW MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO TREE LIMBS AND POTENTIAL POWER OUTAGES. IF THIS BECOMES IMMINENT… THIS ADVISORY WILL BE UPGRADED TO A WINTER STORM WARNING.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SNOW COVERED ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES… AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING. MOTORISTS SHOULD BE ESPECIALLY CAUTIOUS ON BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES… WHERE SLIPPERY SPOTS DEVELOP FIRST.

DO YOU HAVE PRIDE, DANNY?

What do the weather people know anyway?

Good thing we don’t have any resident weathermen on BSD.

I thought

Laura Nichols was a weatherman.

Actually...

I’m a grad student in meteorology here at PSU. It is extremely difficult to forecast precipitation type in areas that are really close to the rain-snow line, as we are here today, so cut us some slack here. :-) That being said, now that it’s switched over to snow today here in State College, it’s likely to stay as snow and not switch back to rain, at least for the rest of today and tonight. I’m glad about that, because 32 and snow is waayyyyy better than 35 and rain. I sure hope it’s snowing for the game on Saturday and not raining, but at this point it’s looking like 36 and rain showers. Another lovely day in Happy Valley.

Soo...

does it suck having everybody mad at you when you do your job? Or do you not have to deal with that yet because you’re still in grad school?

Haha

The first question I get when I tell people I’m in meteorology is either (a) “Are you going to be on TV someday?” (nope, though I thought about going that route for a long time while growing up), or (b) “So what’s it like having a job where you can be wrong 50% of the time?” So yes, even though I’m still in grad school and even though I’m not planning to go into a forecasting job, I still deal with it. :-)

We need a special teams coach. Or I say we just run our studs out there on Special Teams like what some teams do.

by cmdpsu15 on Oct 15, 2009 11:36 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I should have a canned response for "we need a special teams coach".

Although I don’t know if you’re kidding or not, so here we go: We can’t have a special teams coach. You’re only allowed so many coaches. Ohio State doesn’t have one. Iowa does, but he’s also the LB coach. Frank Beamer is basically VT’s special teams coach. And so on.

I know there are X number of coaches RUTS, I was just having fun with the fact that the Gophers have a Special Teams Coach and that’s the “PRIDE” of their team lately.

DO YOU HAVE PRIDE, GOPHERS?

Okay, just making sure. Because everytime a punt gets blocked or a kicker missed a 35 yarder, the internet explodes with WE NEED A SPECIAL TEAMS COACH. Sorry.

by Run Up The Score on Oct 15, 2009 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because, OBVIOUSLY

if we had a dedicated special teams coach, we’d NEVER get a punt blocked, and every kick & punt return would be a touchdown.

This year’s stats are because Joe doesn’t trust the young kids yet. Royster & Astorino are back there because, in theory, they’ll make better decisions. Fair catch beats risk/reward scenario of fumbles or maybe touchdowns.

And for the record

I agree with Jesse that there’s a very real possibility that Minnesota can win this game on special teams and a few big passes to Eric Decker. It’s not unreasonable at all.

is it bad

That I hope we kick it onside every single time. They are probably taking it out to the 50 anyway, and it would reduce the chances of a return td. I trust the defense to tighten up after every kickoff. Especially if the ball is slick for already very inconsistent Adam Weber.

2005 redo

I was hoping for a redo of the 2005 game when Penn Sate came out of its shell and played the perfect game. The weather was perfect that day. Not a good sign with a rain and snow forecast.

So much for that advantage

The kickoff coverage seemed to take a
step forward yesterday. Still hate our punt return though
